Brilliance Review

Brilliance Marcus Sakey.jpg

Book reviews are probably one of my favorite posts to write. I love talking about what I just read and I feel accomplished whenever I complete a book. This is the first book in a trilogy that was given to me by my professor. My professor saw me reading in my building before class and we got to talking. Reading for me, helps to lower my anxiety that I get from life in general. So my professor let me borrow the series. I actually really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would.

So for those of you familiar with the Steelheart saga, these books are pretty similar. In 1986, 1% of children were born brilliant. They can’t shoot laser beams, but they are incredibly smart when it comes to mathematics, music and science. The United States has reacted to brilliants by establishing the Department of Analysis and Response (DAR). This government body will stop any brilliant from breaking the law. The main difference between Steelheart and Brilliance is that in Steelheart, humans have more extravagant powers and it’s also less political. Brilliance feels like the adult series versus Steelheart.

Nick Cooper is an agent of the DAR, but he’s also brilliant. He is able to use commonplace objects to develop patterns and this can help catch criminals. He is usually able to prevent bad things from happening, but on March 12th the Wall Street building explodes. Thanks to a terrorist and brilliant John Smith, Cooper goes on this wild goose chase to find Smith and take him down.

This book feels a little like Jason Bourne in America + 24 the TV Show + Steelheart + politics = Brilliance. I really enjoyed this book on many levels. I really liked the action sequences they were well written and just easy to picture in my mind. I love that this book analyzes bigotry and uses this word quite frequently. People start to look at Brilliant people and stereotype them. I feel like it’s an adequate representation of our world. Also I really like Shannon’s character. Shannon and Cooper come to meet and she becomes a real asset in his journey to find Smith.

This book is divided into various parts that reveal more about what is actually going on. After each part ends you kind of have a reaction similar to “holy shit”. So when you finish this book, you will immediately delve into the sequel which I started yesterday. The only thing I noticed about this book is that it’s slow at certain parts. That’s not a bad thing, but I had times when I would read 100 pages, and then I wouldn’t read the book at all for a couple of days. This allows you time to really savor this book.

Brilliance is a very well-written, political thriller that I would highly recommend. Nick Cooper is an interesting character to follow and his adventure is really like watching an intense action movie. This is a book/series you have to read in your lifetime.

22 Questions To Ask Your Partner

I read a post on a blog that I follow who did this prompt. I sent the questions to the boyfriend who filled them out. I read his responses and a lot of them are really spot on. So here is what the boyfriend said about me:

  1. What is something your girlfriend always says to you:
    That she loves me.
  2. What makes her happy?
The tiny things like random compliments and showing her that I care about her a lot.
  1. What makes her sad?
When she thinks about her dad or something prompts a memory she has.
  2. How does your girlfriend make you laugh?
By doing random things and just being her weird goofy self.
  3. What was your girlfriend like as a child?
Mariah was always into books at a young age. She would sit and just flip through random pages of books and pretend to read them even though she couldn’t read. She also was a chubby baby!
    (This is very accurate).
  4. How old is your girlfriend
    21
  5. How tall is your girlfriend
    5 foot 8 inches (lies.. lol I’m 5 ft 6 inches).
  6. What is her favorite thing to do?
    Read books and drink coffee
  7. What does she do when you’re not around?
Read, study and catch up with tv shows, relax
  8. If your girlfriend becomes famous, what will it be for?
For being an actress in the next Harry Potter movie
  9. What is your girlfriend not very good at?
She’s not good at call of duty. (He doesn’t know that I have never played Call of Duty with him).
  10. What does your girlfriend do for a job?
    She works on campus.
  11. What is your girlfriend’s favorite food?
    Cheesy potatoes.
  12. What makes you proud of her?
I’m proud of her for a lot of reasons. If I had to pick one thing, I would say I’m proud of her for being so dedicated to everything she does. She never does anything halfway and she sees everything all the way through. But the list could go on for what I’m proud of her for.
  13. If your girlfriend were a character, who would she be?
    Hermione.
  14. What do you and your girlfriend do together?
Watch TV, play video games, play board games, get coffee, do homework
  15. How are you and your girlfriend the same?
We both like weight lifting, cats, coffee, video games, comics, and the same TV shows
  16. How are you and your girlfriend different?
I am more introverted and I consider her a lot more extroverted. (I’m actually very surprised by this answer. I have always considered myself introverted).
  17. How do you know she loves you?
Because she tells me multiple times a day, that she is always there for me, she knows how to make me smile and we have never had a boring time together.
  18. What does your girlfriend like the most about you?
I think she likes the most about me is my caring personality and my dedication to my school work and future.
  19. What is her favorite place to go
Her favorite place to go would be any good book store or coffee shop.

This is one of my favorite pictures of him.

Then I filled them out about him. If you would like to know more about the boyfriend I keep referring to.. here you go:

I love you. 😛

2. What makes him happy?

Pugs, coffee, and pre-workout.

3. What makes him sad?

He doesn’t have a pug yet.

4. How does your boyfriend make you laugh?

He always posts random cat videos on my wall because he knows how much I love them. He also posts pug videos and pictures which I’m slowly warming up to.

5. What was your boyfriend like as a child?

He participated a lot in parkour which is where you jump off of stuff. He also was considered “the jock” of his friend group and he likes to play his Xbox. He grew up with cats and his parents are the sweetest people I have ever met.

6. How old is your boyfriend?

21.

7. How tall is your boyfriend?

He is the one that is 5 ft 8 inches. I’m not 5 ft 8 inches.

8. What is his favorite thing to do?

Taking his pre-workout and going to do chest or arm and shoulder day.

9. What does he do when you’re not around?

Working out at snap fitness, watches his TV shows, comes up with new names for his pug, and plays Star Wars Battlefront.

10. If your boyfriend was famous, what would it be for?

I could see the boyfriend saving someone’s life and being on the local news for it.

16. What do you and your boyfriend do together?

We play the LEGO video games together, it’s our annual date night. We also go get coffee together or when in doubt, watch something on Netflix and cuddle.

17. How are you and your boyfriend the same?

I think we are very positive people. He’s generally a very happy person. We are also very determined and we love our cats and video games.

18. How are you and your boyfriend different?

I’m actually surprised by his answer because I would definitely see him as the more outgoing one of us two. I think I’m definitely a lot more energetic than he is though. He’s pretty relaxed.

19. How do you know he loves you?

He tells me he loves me!

20. What does your boyfriend like about you?

Hmm.. I don’t know. I think he likes how caring I can be. I think he likes that I’m 100% myself all the time. I’m a weird, geeky, bizarre person but I never put up a front with that. Also, I make really good homemade waffles so that’s a plus.

21. What is his favorite place to go?

The gym of course.

Minnesota Pride

Spring Break has started and I for one am not going anywhere. No sunny beachside vacation for me, just getting plenty of sleep and reading. Not traveling doesn’t bother me because I love Minnesota. Minnesota is a beautiful place to live with really cool areas and awesome people. I love my college town (Winona, MN) a lot and I also love the cities. Here are some of the many reasons why I love Minnesota.

Minnesota is a beautiful state

I study Exercise Science and I like exercising outdoors. There are so many bike trails, lakes to walk, and forests to explore. If the weather is nice, I’d rather be outdoors than work out at the gym.

Minneapolis & The Geek Community

Since I have accepted myself as a full geek, I have really gotten involved with the community here. I love writing for Twin Cities Geeks in my free time, but I also love the conventions found in this state. There are so many I haven’t been to that I hope to attend once I graduate from school.

Minnesota Summers

Our winters can be brutal. My lips get chapped and my hands feel like sandpaper. Once spring and summer arrive, this is such a great place to be. Minnesota summers are absolutely worth the harsh winters.

If you need a place to visit, come check out Minnesota because it’s truly a great place to be.

Lego Batman 2

It’s rare for me to carve an hour into my day to play video games. Being a college student, classes & work always come first. By the time I get done with everything, it’s usually late and that’s when I’m reading a book and slowly drifting off to sleep. I can’t play video games before I go to bed because it appears in my dreams.

A couple weeks ago, me and boyfriend have made it a date night to play the Lego games together. It’s challenging finding two-player split-screen games and most LEGO games fit that description. We started with LEGO Batman 2 because I ended up buying this game and 007 Bloodstone (which I haven’t played yet). I ended up finding this game pretty cheesy and fun and if you want to a cute LEGO game to satisfy your time, I recommend this one.

My only disappointment is that I wish we could play as the other characters earlier in the game. It was really repetitive playing as Batman and Robin for half the game at least. I loved when the Justice League came to the rescue because it was new characters to play as. I really like the Flash and maybe that’s because of the CW TV show, but he was super cute to play in LEGO form. I also really enjoyed Cyborg too.

Lego Batman 2
Look how cute the Flash looks!!

Beating this game is great in co-op, but most of the achievements are from single-player only which really sucks. I’m not sure if I really want to get all the achievements in single player because it would take forever. I’m excited to play LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens as it comes out in June.

5 Reasons I Love Being a Geek

If Bizarre Brunette doesn’t tell you anything, I describe myself as a geek. I saw this write-up on Geeky Brunette’s blog and I loved this prompt.

Here’s the link to her original post:  10 Reasons I Love Being a Geek

I ended up changing mine to 5 because I wanted to talk more about each reason and I didn’t want this post to be too lengthy. My blog’s ultimate goal is to love yourself for who you are and to be proud of the person you have become.

Here are 5 reasons why I love being a geek.

Enjoying and Trying New Things

There are so many new TV shows, movies, books, graphic novels, and board games to try. I love trying something new and really enjoy it. The most recent example is my newfound love of board games. I have Pandemic in my car right now along with Red Dragon Inn 2. Board games are a nice way to spend a Friday night or any night in general.

Conventions

Conventions are such a fun event for the geek community. Ever since going to CONvergence in 2013, I have loved going to conventions. I have never felt more in my element and I have met a lot of really cool people from these cons. I’m not sure if I will go to Console Room 2016, but CONvergence is definitely on my list. I missed out last year, but I will be back this year.. *hopefully,*

Geek Fashion

I love expressing my Fandoms through my clothing choices. I have my Batman pants that I will love forever. Including my Agents of Shield glow-in-the-dark tank top and my Daredevil shirt. Those are my most notable clothing items but there is so much more in my closet. I get the most compliments whenever I wear something especially geeky. It’s pretty great.

Being Myself

There have always been times when I wasn’t comfortable being myself. I was scared of what everyone else was going to think. Then there came a time early on in my college life when I really stopped caring. People will judge me, but I will always try to be myself.

Being a part of the community!

Ever since I started blogging for Twin Cities Geeks, I have felt more involved in the geek community. I love it! I love the Twin Cities and to know there is a special group of people who are just as geeky as I am, really brings me happiness. I love writing for the page, but I also find out about cool events going on in the Cities. It’s really a fantastic place to be a geek.

Life Lately Mardi Gras!

The weekend always flies by way too quickly. I’m sitting writing a blog post on a Sunday night before I head to work. I will say that this weekend was a blast and I’m so glad I was able to leave Winona for a day. It’s funny how when I leave my college town my stress levels drop. I have a lab practical tomorrow, but I don’t feel nearly as nervous as I did before I left for home.

This weekend almost didn’t happen. On Friday night, I noticed my tire looked flat so my boyfriend offered to fill my tires for me. He came back and said my tire was flat and that I might need to replace the tires. I called for a towing company Saturday morning and as it turns out there was nothing wrong with the tire. Apparently, the screw came loose which made my tire flat. Thank goodness because now I could head for the city.

Me and my two best friends purchased tickets to a Mardi Gras pub crawl. We got all dressed up and took an Uber to the first bar: The Fremont. We got a free mask which was kind of fun. I saw no one dressed up though. :/ I was wearing green and yellow beads and my friend drew on a mask with eyeliner. We met up with some friends and it was a great night filled with dancing and drinks.

I love taking pictures because pictures and the memories associated with them will last forever. Here were some pictures that I took of the event. Overall I don’t recommend paying for pub crawls, instead just go bar hopping if you want a night out.

Life Lately Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day! I for one have spent the entire day working on homework and practicing blood pressure for a lab practical exam. Yesterday though, I spent the entire day with my boyfriend and it was a great time for us to spend together. Also, I got to see Deadpool and I will talk more about that later.

The first part of our day was spent getting coffee. Me and my boyfriend have really bonded over our mutual love of coffee. Blue Heron Coffeehouse is a really nice coffee shop attached to a bookstore. It was a good atmosphere with great coffee. Next on the list was Bloedows. Bloedows is a great donut and pastry shop in my college town. I had this amazing apple turnover which of course led to me getting crumbs all over myself so that’s good.

Valentines Day Weekend.jpg

After the donuts, we went wine tasting. I have never participated in wine tasting before, but in Wisconsin, there’s this beautiful winery so we went there. I tend to like sweeter wine, but I had this dry white wine that was pretty decent too. You get three free wine tastings so me and the boyfriend just switched our glasses to try different kinds.

Valentines Day Weekend 3

Then I finally got to see Deadpool.

It was everything that I wanted it to be. The fight scenes were killer, especially the opening with the highway scene. Also, the deaths are pretty gruesome but I was expecting that going into this movie. I’m already eagerly awaiting the sequel plus Deadpool’s appearance in the other X-Men movies.

Valentines Day Weekend 4

Overall my Valentine’s Day weekend was super nice and romantic.

5 Love Languages

Today I’m going to make a Valentine’s Day/Romance-themed post revolving around my Love Language. I was introduced to this quiz yesterday by my boyfriend’s roommate who insisted that my boyfriend take it. I’m pretty confident that I took this quiz before because it seemed very familiar. Basically, the premise behind this quiz is to figure out how you understand your partner’s expressions of love. I would say the results are pretty accurate, so let’s talk about them.

The way this quiz is scored is 1-12. 12 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

9. Quality Time

This is so accurate! Both me and my boyfriend are super busy! I work a job and take 14 credits of schoolwork while my boyfriend works two jobs on top of other responsibilities. Carving time is pretty difficult during the week, but sometimes we just take a half-hour to spend time together. Quality time together is definitely a way love can be expressed.

7. Acts of Service

Acts of Service is having your partner go above and beyond. My boyfriend brought me coffee at work when I had a tough day which was so sweet!

7 Words of Affirmation.

Giving someone compliments is a great way to show your love for someone. I try and send texts to my boyfriend throughout the day. I love receiving words of affirmation too because it can help me get through a tough time.

5 Physical Touch

I enjoy receiving hugs every once in a while, but me and my boyfriend don’t really do PDA. I think that for some PDA makes people really uncomfortable and when I hang out with friends and my boyfriend, I want to make my friends feel included. This isn’t something huge in my relationship.

2. Receiving Gifts

This isn’t really how I express my love for my boyfriend and vice versa. I just have plenty of “stuff” already and I don’t need more. There are things I keep that have a special meaning to me, but I don’t need a gift to know that this person cares. I also really don’t give gifts that often because I would rather spend money on concert tickets or an experience that we can do together.

So what’s your love language? Here’s the quiz link to figure it out: Love Languages Quiz

Exploding Kittens Card Game Review!

Last Friday/Weekend I was in a weird mood. The boyfriend helped cheer me up when he pulled out Exploding Kittens the card game and suggested we should play it.

Exploding Kittens is a rapid game with each round lasting maybe 10 minutes. The goal of the game is to not get the exploding kitten card and if you do get an exploding kitten, to have a defuse card so you can disarm the kitten. In the beginning, everyone starts out with a defuse card. Each time the exploding kitten card is used, it’s put back into the deck. There are also various cat cards in the deck that once played in pairs let you steal a card from the hands of other players. The best scenario is you swipe the defuse card to have extra protection from the exploding kitten.

For any cat lady, it’s worth it to play the game. I love cats so much as most of you know, so I really enjoyed the game. The cats on the cards are so adorable and I just love them. The game is super short which I enjoy because it doesn’t require my attention for very long. I played two or three rounds and the game kind of gets old after a while, but I still enjoy it.

Things I love Thursdays Week 1

Things I love Thursdays.png

It’s Thursday and that means I’m closer to the weekend! This is a segment created by a couple of female bloggers about things you’re loving and want to share with everyone else. Here’s the link to one of the creator’s blogs so you can check it out. Things I love Thursdays So I decided to participate because I found out a lot of cool stuff this week that I wanted to share so without further ado, here are the coolest and weird stuff I love

Pandemic and Cthulhu Board Game Combo

So to say that I’m excited is definitely an understatement. I loved Pandemic and you can find my review of the game under my gaming section. I also love Arkham Horror which is based on Cthulhu and Lovecraft’s stories. To combine both for a fun take on both games is super awesome. I love board games that are rather complex and this will definitely have that. Cthulhu is creepy and awesome and if it is included in any game, I’m playing it. You can read more about this game here: Cthulu Board Game

Reading Operation Stop Hate

Operation Stop Hate.jpg

I’m reading this awesome book from a Minnesota author called Operation Stop Hate. This novel takes place in Minnesota and I love that I can pinpoint locations from this book. I also enjoy the protagonist a lot. It’s a cool story because I actually have this book signed by the author, but I’ll go into that when I post a review but right now I’m loving this book!

Batman Bad Blood Animated Film

This animated movie looks like it would be good. It stars Dick Grayson aka Nightwing and he tries to save the day when Batman isn’t around. I love that it’s centered around Nightwing and also there’s an appearance by Batgirl which is really nice. I cannot wait to get my hands on this to watch it.

I hope to do this most Thursdays but it depends on how busy I get so we shall see.
