Martha Jones; the Underrated Companion

After discovering Doctor Who in the Summer of 2014, I became a devoted fan girl. The Doctor is egotistical and eccentric while the companions keep him grounded throughout time. I also think Doctor Who tackles societal issues such as xenophobia and racism. As I wondered what I wanted to blog about, I decided to talk about my appreciation for Martha and how amazing she is as a companion.

She Tackles Racism like a Boss

A great episode in her series is Human Nature. In this episode, a woman confronts Martha saying that a woman of color cannot be a doctor, however, Martha puts her in her place. It’s sad that the Doctor takes her back to a time when she needs to do this, but Martha is strong, snarky, and able to hold her own.

She’s in Blink which is One of the Best Doctor Who episodes.

Blink is an episode that’s a good first episode to show non-Whovian. Martha doesn’t have a huge role in this episode, but still, this goes to show how Martha’s episodes were pretty great.

I think one of the many reasons why Martha is disliked is because of the way her character was written. Rose had just left and the writers wanted Martha to be this new romantic interest for the Doctor. Well, the Doctor wasn’t over Rose clearly and so Martha was made to be this woman pining for a man she couldn’t have. How disappointing. Martha had a lot of bright and shining moments as a companion but still couldn’t get over her crush on the Doctor.

If you’re not a fan of Martha, I encourage you to give her another shot. I think you will be mesmerized by what she is capable of and how she’s a great role model to women of all ages. Martha, you deserved better.

My Longing for the Holidays

*I am choosing not to write about the election at this time. I do have a blog post in the works, and I will publish it when I’m ready.*

Last weekend consisted of me working at Caribou while listening to holiday music amidst snowflake decorations. Some customers came up to me slightly annoyed while others were extremely excited. I’m in the latter group because I really enjoy the holidays. The holidays are special to me for a variety of reasons.

Gift Giving!

The older I get, the more I love buying gifts. I already have a list going for my brother, mom, boyfriend, and a college friend of mine. Receiving gifts is fun too, but giving gifts is x10 times better. I would like to say I’m great at buying gifts because I know the people in my life extremely well. This part of the holidays is certainly fun for me.

Christmas 2015 4

Family Bonding

Since I’m still at college, I don’t see my friends & family back home. This saddens me, but I get to spend a lot of time with them during the holidays. I just talked to my brother a couple days ago on the phone, and we have a gaming night planned with my uncle. As a family, we are all going out to a nice dinner to celebrate my aunt’s birthday in December so I’m happy to spend that quality time with them.

Cooking Winter Meals

My mom’s homemade chili, tater tot hot dish, and cheesy mashed potatoes are yummy.

This holiday season will be fantastic no matter what. I need this time to unwind from finals and prepare for my final semester at school. I also get to catch up on some much needed gaming and reading. Is there anything in particular that you’re excited for? Are you still feeling that it’s too early for holiday shenanigans?

Dealing with Puppy Fever

This may come as a huge surprise from someone who loves cats, but I really want a dog. Puppy fever is coming on strong lately. I live in a house with two dogs and I like having them around. I have never owned a dog, but I have owned plenty of cats. I think animals provide a soothing sensation to a home and bring much-needed happiness and warmth. I scoped out some dog breeds that I’m interested in because what else is a better way to procrastinate than doing homework.

The boyfriend loves pugs so I may end up being a pug mom eventually. I’m not too picky about dog breeds, but I would love to be able to take my dog on long walks. I can’t wait to own pets!!

Doctor Who & Cuddly Yoshi; November Goals

It’s my last semester of college classes and I can’t believe that it’s already November!? Where did that time go? I’m excited to graduate because, after 5 years of being in college, I’m ready to be done. I brainstormed while at work and I came up with my November goals.

Catch Up on Doctor Who

I am so behind in Doctor Who! I watched the first series with Capaldi and it took me a long time to get used to him as the Doctor. After completing the series twice, I finally am on board. Amazon Prime has the newest series and that’s going to be the show that I watch in addition to all my fall TV shows.

Beat Yoshi’s Island or Remastered Zelda Ocarina of Time

Yoshi's Island.jpg

My poor neglected 3DS; I see it sitting on my shelf in the Hello Kitty case, but I never take it out. I played a little Yoshi’s Island yesterday and I forgot how cute this game is. I decided I wanted to make sure I finish one of these games in the month of November. Also, I have never played a Zelda game before so I’m excited to hopefully start that game soon.

Read 2 Books in November

I’m currently reading a book written by a local MN author, but I also have the YA Black Widow novel sitting waiting to be read. I’m super excited to start that book. I also hope to pick up some new trade paperbacks sometime soon.

Honestly, I don’t have anything else I want to add to this list. These goals should keep me pretty busy. Plus once the end of November hits, finals will be approaching quickly so I need time to devote to that. This small list is perfect for this Thanksgiving, winter month.

Concluding October Goals

Happy Halloween! Since it’s the last day of October, I wanted to reflect on the goals I made for this month. I will probably make a separate post for November goals because this post became a little longer than I had originally intended for it to be.

Pass The American College of Sports Medicine Personal Trainer Certification Test

COMPLETE

I’m so relieved! I took the test on October 19th and I passed with flying colors. This means a lot to me because as soon as I graduate I can apply to be a Personal Trainer in a gym setting. I can also do personal training outside a gym setting and set up a client list. So this is very exciting stuff. Also, this means I didn’t waste $300. . . phew.

Listen to 3 episodes of 3 different podcasts.

Incomplete 😦

I listen to various episodes from two different podcasts. The first podcast I listened to was Panels & Pizza. This podcast takes place in a local MN comic book shop and the host interviews local artists. The other podcast I started listening to was Pop-Queer-is. This podcast talks about different queer identities shown in a pop culture setting. The first episode was about Harley Quinn and her problematic back story which was super interesting. I’m on the episode about trans representation and how problematic some of this content is.

Turn off my phone while I’m at school/work and only scroll for 5 minutes at one time.

Incomplete 😦

I started playing Disney Emoji Blitz which is a really cute app to pass the time. I also scroll through Instagram way more than I should so I still need to work on this.

Hang My CONvergence Art plus Billie Piper’s signature

Incomplete 😦

You know how you have something on your list that you need to buy, but it’s a boring thing to buy so you don’t buy it? That’s how I feel about frames. So I didn’t buy frames for my art, but I might just put some tape on the back of the images and hang them anyway. I want them hung up, I just don’t want to buy frames. Instead I went to Target and bought Snoopy socks.

Read Two Complete Books *graphic novels included*

COMPLETE

I read Anna and the French Kiss which by the way. . I hated it.  This story was not romantic whatsoever! Anna did some things with St. Clair that were not okay. As someone who has had to bring up cheating in a relationship before, this ruined their whole relationship. I don’t care that Anna had feelings for St. Clair, they shouldn’t have snuggled/slept in the same bed together. C’mon.. -End Rant- I also read I Kill Giants a graphic novel my brother lent me. Finally, I read Crafting with Feminism the crafting book I recently reviewed.

Watch the Luke Cage Series on Netflix.

COMPLETE

Luke Cage was so good. It’s great to see a narrative that’s not told by white men because that does happen far too often. All of Marvel’s Netflix shows have been superb and I can’t wait for the Defenders.

October was a fantastic month for me and I hate to see it go. I can’t wait for the Holiday Season as I already started Christmas shopping! I hope everyone had a safe and Happy Halloween!

Feminism Crafting Party

Crafting with Feminism.jpg
Crafting with Feminism 3.jpg

Crafting is such a fun, relaxing way to chill with friends. A couple weeks ago I was contacted to review a new crafting book titled Crafting with Feminism 25 Girl Powered Projects to Smash the Patriarchy. The author shown above is a feminist of course and she’s wearing some of the above crafts you can make. I was emailed a $30 e-gift card for supplies and sent the book for free. Unfortunately, you can’t use the e-gift card in stores only online so I actually haven’t used it. I plan on using it to make a more expensive craft in the future so I can order supplies online. Me & my group settled on the empowering underwear and the tampon crafts.

Crafting with Feminism 5.jpg

As a crafting beginner, I wish I would have done more research on making underwear. Apparently, you can’t use a bleach pen on spandex which I didn’t know. Two of the girls in my group ruined their underwear accidentally. So if you use a bleach pen, don’t use it on spandex!! I used cotton underwear and it worked really well. Here are some of the pictures of the finished underwear:

My pair of underwear turned out really well!

As for the tampon craft, the tampons look kinda creepy. I think we used too thick of a pen because we called them the “Joker & Harley tampons” So using a thin point sharpie probably would make the tampons look a lot better. I have attached the Joker & Harley tampons here:

Joker Tampon is on the left, and Harley Quinn is on the right.

Crafting with Feminism 9.jpg

Overall, I thought this book was fun. I still really want to make the coffee mug, the feminist-empowered flask, and the candles. However, there are some crafts that just aren’t appealing to me.  I have no interest in sewing a uterus pillow, decorating vagina decorations on the Christmas tree, and making anything revolving with tampons. Granted I’m not good at sewing so that’s part of the reason why I don’t want to do some of the crafts. If you’re a self-declared feminist like myself, I think you will love the crafting book.

Incorporating Geek into Fashion

Now is a great time to label yourself as a geek. There are endless superhero movies in theaters, new comic series being drawn and board game shops popping up everywhere. Geek fashion is also something that’s evolved over the years. I wanted to briefly share how I incorporate geeky Fandoms into my wardrobe and how I still look fashionable and cute.

Jewelry & Accessories

Renaissance Festival 2016.jpg

Red Wing Day.jpg

Scarves are probably my favorite accessory. They’re perfect for those cold, chilly winter days and being in Minnesota, there are plenty of those days approaching. My scarf above has planets, the sun and the moon on it. The scarf is more nerdy than geeky. The second picture I have a Hello Kitty ring on my finger because I love cats and I also have owl earrings in. Jewelry & accessories are a great way to show of your geek in situations where wearing a geek t-shirt are prohibited. For brands, I recommend Betsy Johnson for jewelry. I also pick up a lot of accessories at conventions too.

Tardis Dress / Clothing Options

Lanesboro August 28th 16 5.jpg

I can’t say how many times I love this dress from Her Universe. I originally bought this for  Console-Room a Doctor Who convention I attended, but it’s appropriate for everyday wear too. It’s extremely flattering and super comfy. Her Universe is a great brand for geek fashion. I will say that I feel their sizing runs small. I wear a medium in their t-shirts and a large in their leggings. Besides Her Universe, a couple other sources for geek clothes including Hot Topic of course, DeliasSuperherostuff.comWe Love Fine and more.

I can always use shopping recommendations, so where do you get all of your geek fashion items? Let me know in the comments! 😀

Bon Voyage Surprise Party

Last weekend I had the pleasure of driving to the cities to meet up with my best friends. The catch? We were throwing my friend a surprise party! My friend is leaving tomorrow and flying to New Zealand and I still can’t believe it. I’m incredibly happy for her, but I’ll still miss her unique laugh. She was my neighbor for at least a decade and I had known her since I was 3 years old. It’s amazing to still know someone you knew from that young of an age.

Drinking (2).jpg

Her party was at an Irish brewery/taproom in Uptown. It’s perfect because that’s a place her mom frequently visits and my friend made a comment, “Maybe my mom will be there.” Once we pulled up to the brewery, we showed her to the surprise tap room where everyone just yelled surprise with such an explosive volume. She didn’t know what to say and was just shocked that this happened. What is there to say? It’s hard to put into words how much your friends and family mean to you.

Linden Surprise Party October 15th 2016.jpg

It was great to be able to escape my college stress for a day and see my awesome friends. One of the reasons why I’m eagerly waiting for graduation is because I want to be closer to the Twin Cities. I love the atmosphere, the small businesses, and the people waiting for me. I have one last ode to my friend; have a great time and fly safe! This isn’t goodbye, but a see you later. Hopefully in New Zealand though because I need to see Hobbiton.

Wanderlust & My Travel Bucketlist

This whole week I have been suffering from major writer’s block. I wanted to blog, but I couldn’t think of anything to write about. In my 9:30 AM lecture class, the topic appeared in my mind and that’s my strong desire to travel. Whenever anyone asks where I will be after graduation my initial first thought is on a plane somewhere exploring an unknown area of the U.S or the world. Wanderlust is my new favorite word that accurately summarizes my feelings.

Wanderlust *noun* – A strong desire to travel.

I had a serious discussion in my head about where I would want to go and I decided to share a couple of these future travel plans today.

Universal Studios Orlando, Fl

There was no doubt that this would be #1 on this list. I’m always going to be a kid at heart and I feel like visiting this theme park is necessary. I have been looking into vacation packages and I’m serious about trying to fly here the summer after I graduate.

Seattle, Washington

Fun fact: I have never seen an ocean. This fact is incredibly sad because I’m sure oceans are really beautiful. The west coast is gorgeous and it’s right along the Pacific Ocean. Driving would be the best way to experience the West Coast even though I’m really impatient on road trips.

London

England is the home to Doctor Who, Sherlock, and James Bond, so of course I want to visit!

New York City Comic Con/A Bigger Con

I really want to go to a bigger convention. Local conventions in MN are my jam, but I would love to see some big names. I don’t have a preference about whether to go to NYCC or SDCC, but I really want to attend one in my life. The only thing that I’m afraid of is that there are so many people. I’m not the hugest fan of crowds, but I wouldn’t want that to stop me from being able to attend.

Japan

Japanese culture is really different from the U.S. In my freshman year of college, I was paired with a roommate from outside of Tokyo and it was cool to chat with her about their culture. She said at her college graduation she would wear a brightly colored kimono. As a parting gift, she gave me a traditional Japanese fan with cats on it because it’s me. I still have it sitting on my dresser. Me and my roommate talk occasionally and she’s always said I could visit and stay with her. Hopefully, I can make that a possibility.

There are so many places that are on my travel bucket list that I didn’t mention. Just typing this list makes me giddy about planning all my future vacations. I can’t wait to graduate college and make traveling a priority.

Amazing Announcements from New York Comic Con

New York City Comic Con is slowly coming to a close. One day when I’m out of college and I make more money to put to traveling, I will show up at New York Comic Con hopefully in cosplay. Until then, I will just observe from the depths of the internet. I wanted to share my favorite announcements/geeky news from this convention.

Marvel Defenders: Villain Casting & Iron Fist Trailer

Sigourney Weaver was cast as the villain and an Iron Fist teaser trailer was leaked on the internet. Also I just want to take a moment and say how much I love Krysten Ritter’s bright blue boots/heels. I need to get a pair of my own. Marvel and Netflix are a great pair as I have thoroughly enjoyed every single Netflix Marvel show

Clockwork Dagger Book

Thanks to my wonderful Twin Cities Geek editor, I was able to get a free PDF copy of this new book. Apparently it’s a steampunk science fiction book and it sounds really interesting. I’m currently reading a couple of books at once, but I plan to devour this as soon as possible. I love free books especially since I wasn’t able to make it to New York Comic Con.

Batwoman Solo Comic

A Batwoman solo comic is in the works and did I mention that she will be a fabulous queer and lesbian superhero? I’m excited. I love seeing different LGBTQIA+ groups represented in comics so to see this happening by DC is a step in the right direction. This won’t be released until February 2017, but I’m keeping my eye on it until then.

Wonder Woman Statues

There were a couple images released of Wonder Woman statues to coincide with the release of the DC film. They look so intricate and replicate Gal Gadot’s natural beauty. I loved this one with the majestic horse and Wonder Woman raising her sword ready to defend her honor. This is probably the movie I’m most excited for because it’s Wonder Woman and her appearance in Batman v. Superman was one of my favorite scenes.

This ends my round up of New York Comic Con news, are you a huge fan of the Defenders like I am? Let’s discuss the Iron Fist trailer in the comments!
