Barbara Gordon; My Favorite Superhero.

Barbara Gordon is one of my all time favorite comic book characters. She’s young at heart, she’s extremely intelligent and I admire that she’s a computer hacker. She cares immensely for Bruce and she was a great role model for disabled characters in comics. I’m enraged at how Barbara’s story is being told in multiple movies and games. I’m writing this post as a disappointed fan who knows Barbara deserves better.

I consciously thought about writing this post after I finished playing Arkham Knight on a Saturday night. As I play the game, I watch vividly as Barbara is kidnapped. I cruise through Gotham trying to find her because I’m sad she was kidnapped in the first place. After punching, kicking, and running Scarecrow’s men over in the Batmobile, I find Barbara. She seemingly “kills herself” after being exposed to Scarecrow’s gas, but she ends up being alive. Too bad she is only in the game for maybe an hour. I will say though that there is a fun part where Barbara will hack certain objects to help Batman in the finale, which was really epic!!

Oracle 2.jpg

The Killing Joke is another story that really throws Barbara’s character in the trash. I understand it’s based off the Alan Moore comic and Barbara is paralyzed and stripped nude by the joker. It wasn’t necessary however, to add more footage of Barbara and Batman having sex. Like what? Batman has always been a guardian to Barbara and it was way too weird to throw this random sex scene in. Barbara is sexualized for no reason at all.

I hope in the future, Barbara Gordon gets a good film or TV series as I think she deserves it.

The Killing Joke is an abysmal portrayal of Barbara. I will say Arkham Knight did get better with how Barbara ended up helping out Batman. Hopefully, DC comics can see the hatred they have caused in the community and are willing to give me a decent Barbara Gordon story. It will be worth every penny.

Shadow Hunters; Hunted or Be Hunted

This post marks my return to tabletop gaming. Two weeks ago, my brother & I drove to my uncle’s house for a Magic the Gathering draft and game night. Besides the amazing sweet corn and grilled chicken I ate, we played Shadow Hunters. This was my first time playing because I had never heard of this game prior to my brother pulling it out of his briefcase. The game itself is easy to learn, and fast-paced with excellent character art on each of the cards.

Shadow Hunters 2.jpg

Shadow Hunters are all about the skill of negotiation and guesswork. Players are assigned one character out of three classes: Shadows, Hunters, and Neutrals. Shadows are supernatural creatures on the prowl in the evening. Hunters are humans trained to kill the Shadows. Neutrals are just humans in the town who have their own agenda. Nobody knows which class you’re in which is all a part of the fun. For shadows to win the game, they have to kill the hunters. Hunters, therefore, have to kill the shadows. The neutrals though are interesting. My uncle had a character that was neutral that would only win the game if he died first. So just because you know someone is neutral, doesn’t mean you know what’s going on.

Shadow Hunters 3.jpg

This game is definitely a party game. I wish we had more than 4 people playing, best case scenario would be 8. It’s harder to deduce who everyone is so it makes the game go on longer. At one point I thought my brother was a shadow so I attacked him. Turns out I was wrong and he was on my side the entire time. . . oops.

Shadow Hunters.jpg

Can we just take a second and admire the art on this card? Two games in a row I got dealt, Ellen. She looks so sweet and innocent, yet I’m sure she can deal serious damage. The art itself takes inspiration from Japanese culture and manga which is something I have started to dabble in lately.

Shadow Hunters is a game I want to own for myself in the future. It’s perfect for any anime or manga fan or for a general tabletop gamer.

Retro Gaming: Carmen Sandiego, the most stylish criminal.

My gaming section has been really lacking. I still need to get past the final Joker boss battle on Batman Arkham Asylum on hard. Unfortunately, the boyfriend has his Xbox One at my apartment at college and I haven’t been able to play it this summer. Also, I got Overwatch for my birthday so I’m super excited about being able to play it. I decided to write about more retro games that led to me becoming the devoted gamer that I am today. So let’s talk about the most stylish video game criminal I know; Carmen Sandiego.

Carmen Sandiego was a criminal who would be up to these really extreme schemes. She’s the ringleader of the criminal organization called V.I.L.E. In every game, you’re an agent to the A.C.M.E Detective Agency assigned to track Carmen around the world. The games don’t really go into what Carmen’s objective is, but I always assumed it was world domination. Carmen is stylish as I mentioned earlier as she always wears her red trench coat and her red hat. It’s her signature look and it’s always what you want to look for when you want to capture her.

The Carmen Sandiego games are unique because they were meant to be educational. The gaming company Broderbund wanted to create a fun educational game. They succeeded because I learned about math, english & grammar and more. I still play this game every once in a while and I love playing the games still.

My favorite Carmen Sandiego game was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. It was so fun traveling to different locations and capturing other criminals from V.I.L.E. Truthfully I have probably beat this game at least 10 times. I also really enjoyed Where in the U.S.A is Carmen Sandiego. Learning about the United States was kinda fun. I still remember some random fact that I learned from a Carmen Sandiego game.

I’m not sure where you can find a copy of a Carmen Sandiego game. I have the really old CD rom discs for my HP laptop from the early 2000’s. I searched Steam and I can’t find any of the older Carmen games. Regardless, I will always have fond memories of the Carmen Sandiego games. I wouldn’t be the gamer I am today without trying to attempt to capture Carmen in Egypt.

Titanfall

Titan Fall.jpg
This game is my favorite!

I’m sure everyone can agree with me when they say they hate moving. I think the worst is just realizing how much stuff you truly own. I spent most of last week moving the boyfriend’s things. When we finally arranged everything I was finally able to unwind and play on his Xbox One. The first game I popped into his Xbox was Titanfall and I had a blast.

Titanfall is basically an online based game where you fight other players in this futuristic world. I don’t know if there’s any campaign for this game.? I’m pretty sure the only point is to play online and rack up levels which is totally fine with me. Once you score enough points in the game you can summon a “titan” which is this huge robot you can pilot. Battling gamers in Titanfall reminded me of Halo 3 and all of the endless hours I spent playing online.

Another reason I was so excited for this game was it easily reminded me of Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim is an underrated Guillermo Del Toro movie that I really love. The titans remind me of the Jaegers which are mechanical ships that are piloted by humans. Also if you haven’t watched Pacific Rim I highly recommend it. The Titan has a lot of cool mechanics including shooting rockets and blocking attacks. I can also use the scope to zoom in on other players and run over and smash pilots on the ground.

Titanfall is such a fun time and I can’t wait to play it throughout the year when I’m back in Winona.

Here Kitty Kitty Board Game Review

Last week, I visited River Quest randomly after I got off work. I was feeling frustrated with college and life in general, so it was nice to procrastinate for an hour or so. River Quest’s board game of the week was called Here Kitty Kitty which is about collecting cats. Of course, I wanted to play this game so we broke it out and played one round.

This is the scorecard of the game. The goal is to move the kitties to your house because you get more points that way. However, there are cards in this game that can cause some ruckus which include stealing cats, passing cats to your neighbor’s house, and preventing people from stealing your cats. After all the cards have been used, the game ends and the score is totaled. The one with the highest score wins.

Here Kitty Kitty Game.jpg

The cats remain in the center and you can take a cat and add it to your board. Each turn consists of two actions. This includes taking a cat and placing it in your yard, moving a cat from the yard to the porch, or moving it into the house. Also playing a card counts as one action so it’s important to plan each turn effectively!

Here Kitty Kitty Game 2.jpg

This is the rule card below. You can also plan out which color of cats are on your property. So getting all grey cats or all black cats will earn you more points.

Here Kitty Kitty Game 4

Being the cat lover I am, I liked this game. I liked that it was simple to learn, but also was over quick. Sometimes longer board games make me lose my attention span, but this one was perfect. If you are a cat lady like myself, this game must be in your closet.

Lego Batman 2

It’s rare for me to carve an hour into my day to play video games. Being a college student, classes & work always come first. By the time I get done with everything, it’s usually late and that’s when I’m reading a book and slowly drifting off to sleep. I can’t play video games before I go to bed because it appears in my dreams.

A couple weeks ago, me and boyfriend have made it a date night to play the Lego games together. It’s challenging finding two-player split-screen games and most LEGO games fit that description. We started with LEGO Batman 2 because I ended up buying this game and 007 Bloodstone (which I haven’t played yet). I ended up finding this game pretty cheesy and fun and if you want to a cute LEGO game to satisfy your time, I recommend this one.

My only disappointment is that I wish we could play as the other characters earlier in the game. It was really repetitive playing as Batman and Robin for half the game at least. I loved when the Justice League came to the rescue because it was new characters to play as. I really like the Flash and maybe that’s because of the CW TV show, but he was super cute to play in LEGO form. I also really enjoyed Cyborg too.

Lego Batman 2
Look how cute the Flash looks!!

Beating this game is great in co-op, but most of the achievements are from single-player only which really sucks. I’m not sure if I really want to get all the achievements in single player because it would take forever. I’m excited to play LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens as it comes out in June.

Exploding Kittens Card Game Review!

Last Friday/Weekend I was in a weird mood. The boyfriend helped cheer me up when he pulled out Exploding Kittens the card game and suggested we should play it.

Exploding Kittens is a rapid game with each round lasting maybe 10 minutes. The goal of the game is to not get the exploding kitten card and if you do get an exploding kitten, to have a defuse card so you can disarm the kitten. In the beginning, everyone starts out with a defuse card. Each time the exploding kitten card is used, it’s put back into the deck. There are also various cat cards in the deck that once played in pairs let you steal a card from the hands of other players. The best scenario is you swipe the defuse card to have extra protection from the exploding kitten.

For any cat lady, it’s worth it to play the game. I love cats so much as most of you know, so I really enjoyed the game. The cats on the cards are so adorable and I just love them. The game is super short which I enjoy because it doesn’t require my attention for very long. I played two or three rounds and the game kind of gets old after a while, but I still enjoy it.

Things I love Thursdays Week 1

Things I love Thursdays.png

It’s Thursday and that means I’m closer to the weekend! This is a segment created by a couple of female bloggers about things you’re loving and want to share with everyone else. Here’s the link to one of the creator’s blogs so you can check it out. Things I love Thursdays So I decided to participate because I found out a lot of cool stuff this week that I wanted to share so without further ado, here are the coolest and weird stuff I love

Pandemic and Cthulhu Board Game Combo

So to say that I’m excited is definitely an understatement. I loved Pandemic and you can find my review of the game under my gaming section. I also love Arkham Horror which is based on Cthulhu and Lovecraft’s stories. To combine both for a fun take on both games is super awesome. I love board games that are rather complex and this will definitely have that. Cthulhu is creepy and awesome and if it is included in any game, I’m playing it. You can read more about this game here: Cthulu Board Game

Reading Operation Stop Hate

Operation Stop Hate.jpg

I’m reading this awesome book from a Minnesota author called Operation Stop Hate. This novel takes place in Minnesota and I love that I can pinpoint locations from this book. I also enjoy the protagonist a lot. It’s a cool story because I actually have this book signed by the author, but I’ll go into that when I post a review but right now I’m loving this book!

Batman Bad Blood Animated Film

This animated movie looks like it would be good. It stars Dick Grayson aka Nightwing and he tries to save the day when Batman isn’t around. I love that it’s centered around Nightwing and also there’s an appearance by Batgirl which is really nice. I cannot wait to get my hands on this to watch it.

I hope to do this most Thursdays but it depends on how busy I get so we shall see.

My Experience with Gaming Harassment

I read an article a couple days ago about a fifth-grader playing Minecraft where she met this “12-year-old boy” The mother saw the messages sent by this “12-year-old boy” which were sexual in nature. The mother went to the police and they are currently trying to track down this creep. It’s disgusting that predators use gaming to lure kids. Harassment exists prominently in gaming.

I have certainly been harassed extensively when I first started gaming. As a young 13-year-old awkward girl in middle school, I received an Xbox 360 in Christmas 2007. That Christmas I played Halo 3 for probably the entire day; those were the good days. That’s when I first saw the ugly side of gaming. Me being a naive 13-year-old girl, I made my gamer tag an obvious somewhat girly tag. I would get messages from guys trying to flirt with me. I would be in a match and people would see my gamer tag and say I was probably ugly, fat, and a bitch. Those were the PG comments that I got. I had a lot of sexual comments from guys saying what they would do to me. Yet, I’m just a 13-year-old girl trying to enjoy her favorite game.

I handle harassment by just reporting it and hopefully, that fixes the issue. In the past, I would have reacted defensively, but that leads to the comments becoming worse with more threatening language. I wish the gaming industry wasn’t this way, and I won’t let it stop me from enjoying something I love. However, it shows me how sexism & misogyny are still prevalent in today’s society.

Pandemic Board Game Review!

On New Year’s Eve, I’m always a hermit. I don’t usually have big extravagant plans with a glass of champagne in my hand. This year is no different because I spent it at home playing a board game I received for Christmas called Pandemic. Special thanks to my boyfriend’s parents for buying this game for me for Christmas after seeing my bucket list pinned to the top of this blog. 🙂

Pandemic Game 2
Pandemic Game

The basis behind Pandemic is to prevent a world catastrophe by finding the cure to four deadly diseases. This game is cooperative which brings players together. There are seven pawns that represent characters who are crucial to the success of this game. There’s a researcher and a scientist who have extra benefits to help make the game that much easier.

Pandemic Card

Losing the game can happen in a couple of ways: there are more than 7 outbreaks globally, no more diseases (diseases are represented by color-coded cubes placed on the board) can be placed on the board and all cards are drawn from the player deck. It may seem like the odds are against you, but with character benefits, it makes for a pretty fair game.

I love how each game is relatively short. I would say no longer than an hour. In terms of difficulty that can be adjusted by the player. Epidemic cards can be added to the main deck resulting in diseases spreading and increasing the infection rate. There are 6 epidemic cards and they recommend adding four if you’re a beginner.

My only problem with this game is how the cards are worded. I realized that I had misread the card and I had been playing the game wrong twice. Oops. That happens sometimes when you start a new board game, but I thought the wording on the instruction cards could have been more clear.

Pandemic is a very fun game for beginners to board games such as myself, but it’s great for longtime fans. I’m going to play it tomorrow again, but it ranks among the top five board games I have played so far. I definitely need to research the expansions for this game because I’m sure they’re fantastic. It’s great to cross another game off my bucket list!
