Life Lately: The Forest, Jurassic World & Red Dragon Inn

I’m feeling anxious, nervous, and excited all at the same time. In a week from now, I will be on my first road trip to go to Electric Forest. Electric Forest is a four-day music festival in Rothbury, Michigan. It’s taking place from June 25th-28th. We are leaving on June 24th to do most of the driving before making our way to the festival on the 25th. I purchased my tickets months ago and I can’t believe it’s happening in a week! My friend introduced me to the festival and in a split second, we purchased tickets.

The festival itself is beautiful. I have been looking at some of the pictures taken from last year and it’s making me even more excited. The stages are surrounded by trees and there are bright neon lights that light up the stage at night. Yoga will be taught on the stage in the morning.

I’m not an experienced camper. My mom considers camping as staying in a hotel for a night. We never did camping trips when I was little. This will be my first experience with camping for more than a night. That excites me and makes me nervous. Thankfully, my friends that I’m going with have had a lot of experience with camping. I plan on posting pictures and my experience after the forest! This will be my first road trip ever and I feel like an adult.

Yesterday, I saw Jurassic World with my boyfriend! I really enjoyed it. It was cool to see the dinosaurs on the big screen.

Finally, last weekend I played some Red Dragon Inn. I was first introduced to this board game at a video game club meeting I went to two years ago. I got my brother into it too and he let me borrow his second edition of the game. The goal of Red Dragon Inn is to not get wasted, don’t lose your health, and don’t lose all of your gold. Me and the boyfriend played it outside in a gazebo and it was really fun. Plus we saw the sunset and it was really beautiful.

The Catalain book of Secrets: Review

Catalain Book of Secrets

My stack of books to be read is slowly decreasing. The latest book I read, The Catalain Book of Secrets was a book I picked up during my bookstore hunt in Minneapolis over spring break. I saw this book on a shelf and I was entranced. The cover is absolutely beautiful. The purple and blue colors are really pretty and the mansion itself is a huge part of this novel.

This novel takes place in Faith Falls, Minnesota. Catalain is a well-known family in Faith Falls particularly because they are capable of performing magic. Each family member has a unique gift with magical abilities. Ursula has the ability to make incredible potions. Her two daughters: Katrine and Jasmine also have unique abilities. Throughout the novel, there is a Catalain family curse. It starts with Ursula and it’s detailed in the first chapter. This family curse threatens to take away the Catalain magic and the happiness of the women in the family.

I really enjoyed Jessica Lourey’s writing style. Her writing has a lot of imagery and it’s easy to imagine the fictional small town. Since I’m from Minnesota, it’s nice to read a book that captures Minnesota’s beauty.

I really loved the Catalain women. This book has very strong female characters in it. It also shows that each of the characters has had their hardships and how they handled them.

Normally, this isn’t a book I would choose for myself to read. I really enjoyed it! The characters are great, the setting of the story is told really well and I really enjoyed the writing of the story. I recommend this especially if you live in the Minnesota area.

Gotham Season 1

Yesterday consisted of rock climbing and relaxing by watching TV shows. I finally finished the first season of Gotham. Will I watch a second season? Probably not.. this show was not what I expected.

. Gotham

(First Row: Oswald Cobblepot, Jim Gordon, Selina Kyle, Harvey Bullock. Second Row: Bruce Wayne, Fish Mooney, Pamela Isley, and Edward Ngyma).

The season started off really interesting. The show is told from Jim Gordon’s perspective before he becomes commissioner. It serves as a prequel with Bruce Wayne still in middle school. The first episode of course is when Bruce’s parents are killed. Bruce wants to restore Gotham and remove all of the crime within Wayne’s enterprises. Jim Gordon is off fighting crime and even works for Arkham Asylum for one point in time. I actually really enjoy the part of the show where Jim and Harvey are out-solving crimes. It feels like a dystopian Law & Order.

Jim is out trying to control the four crime mafia bosses. This includes Oswald Cobblepot, Fish Mooney, Falcone, and Maroni. The four of them are fighting for control over Gotham. I actually don’t mind the Oswald Cobblepot portrayal. He does a good job of acting like the future penguin. I also liked the development of the Iceberg Lounge.

I also really like the portrayal of Edward Ngyma. The fact that they started him off in the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) as a medical examiner is pretty accurate to me. We see Ed lose his sanity within the season finale. That’s one component of the show that really entices me into watching season 2.

As mentioned above, I’m probably not going to watch any future seasons. I’m not a fan of Barbara Gordon. She is Jim’s girlfriend and that’s okay. Barbara through the course of the show becomes depressed and starts sleeping with Renee Montoya on the GCPD. I think it’s cool that the show embraces bisexuality but, once Barbara sleeps with Renee, the storyline is dropped. Towards the end of the season, she loses her sanity. I felt like her character was thrown away. There was a lot the show could have done with her character.

The Joker has been introduced already in this season. I think that’s a mistake because, by the time Bruce is grown, the Joker would be thirty years older than him?

I can see why there are fans of Gotham. It’s a new take on Batman and Gotham, however, it’s simply not for me.

L.A. Confidential: Review

L.A. Confidential

Summer is one of my favorite seasons because it allows me more time to read. I probably spent at least three hours reading yesterday to finish this book. L.A. Confidential is a book I picked up when I went bookstore hunting in Minneapolis. I finally got around to reading it. Unfortunately, this book was really disappointing. This is one instance where the movie is ten times better than the book.

L.A. Confidential takes place in the 1950s. The story revolves around police officers in the Los Angeles district. Ellroy introduces way too many characters to keep track of. However, the three main characters worth noting are Bud White, Jack Vincennes, and Edmund Exley. The three characters are all police officers in various districts within the police department. Bud White is working homicide and he purposefully goes after men who beat women. He goes against the rules and beats criminals who he feels deserve it. Jack Vincennes was working under narcotics and then gets transferred to Ad Vice which deals with pornography-type crimes. Finally, Edmund Exley is the “goody-two-shoes” cop. He follows every single protocol. He is essentially the opposite of Bud White. The novel revolves around the mystery of the “The Nite Owl” homicide. In 1953, various people were murdered at this nite owl coffee shop.

The problem with these characters is that I honestly dislike all of them. Bud White is violent and very sexist and disgusting towards women. He sees them as objects and calls women whores all the time. Now, that may just be the time period in which the novel takes place, but still, I really dislike Bud White as a character. Jack Vincennes is just a fame-hungry police officer. Edmund Exley is the good guy cop who only cares about making his way up in the police force. None of these characters are characters I appreciate.

The story itself is rather confusing. Ellroy introduces all of these different police officers and criminals and it’s really hard to keep track. If I would have known that before starting the book, I would have written down every single character and why they are related to the story.

Another problem I had with this book is how slow it was. My favorite part of the movie is when Exley and White team up to solve the crime and end the corruption in the police department. That doesn’t happen until the last 50 pages or so. All this build-up wasn’t even worth it because when everything was revealed about the nite owl, it took a while for me to fully understand what was going on.

I could probably keep going about how much I disliked this novel. If you love the 50’s time period, police corruption, and gangster activity, watch the movie. The movie is fantastic and it does a great job at keeping things interesting.

Life Lately: Doctor Who Con/Console-Room

Last weekend was the Console-Room’s Doctor Who Convention in the Twin Cities. It was my first convention other than CONvergence. It went from May 29th-May 31st in the Hilton Hotel. I am lucky in the fact that I live right near the hotel. I didn’t have to pay for a hotel room for the convention, and I just commuted there and back. I saved a lot of money that way!

On Friday, I picked up my badge! I got there really early so there was no line to pick up my badge! It has the four guests of honor: Ellie Darcy-Alden (daughter in the Snowmen episode), Colin Baker (6th Doctor), Gareth David Lloyd (Torchwood/Doctor Who spin-off show), and Joseph Darcy-Alden (son in the Snowmen episode). During the convention, I saw Ellie and Joseph and their commentary during the Snowmen episode. It was really interesting! When I re-watch that episode, I won’t watch it the same. The second picture is the program guide! I thought it was super cool so I took a picture of it.

I went to many panels throughout the convention. One panel was about Doctor Who-themed cosplay. Natasha, the moderator on the panel, made this Tardis/Victorian dress. I think it’s amazing! I cannot sew because I’m not that artistic. Whenever I cosplay, I usually go to a thrift store and come up with something. She said this dress took months to make. It’s cool that everyone has a different interpretation of their favorite aspect of Doctor Who. I also saw a cosplay titled “Tardis Prime”. It was a guy with cardboard blocks on his body and he looked like a Tardis-themed Optimus Prime. It was really cool and unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of it.

One of my favorite parts of the Convention was the Dealer’s Room. I have never seen more Doctor Who items that I wanted to buy in one place. I wandered the Dealer’s Room for two days and I bought a lot of really cool stuff. The first items I bought were the Pikachu and Hello Kitty rings. Lately, I love wearing rings. Besides scarves, rings are my second favorite accessory. Sakura Blossoms is a website that sells really cool accessories. They appear at many conventions including CONvergence. They appeared at this con. Both of these rings are super cute and adorable and I knew that I couldn’t let them pass me by. Along with the rings from Sakura Blossoms, I also bought this really cute collectible unicorn. It’s currently sitting on my desk in my room.

Besides my purchases from Sakura’s Blossoms, I bought some Doctor Who-themed stuff. First of all, the stuffed adipose is ADORABLE! It’s so cute and squishy. The adipose episode with Donna Noble is one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes. I also found the Tardis water bottle. I also bought two books. The first book “Chicks Dig Time Lords” is a collection of women’s points of view from the Doctor Who series. The second book Companion Piece is more or less similar to Chicks Dig Time Lords. Finally, the last purchase I made was the Doctor Who lanyard. It says “I ❤ ❤ the Doctor”. The Doctor has two hearts which makes it even cooler.

Wandering the convention is super entertaining! I found a couple Daleks and an evil snowman. The Daleks were hand-made by people attending the convention. I also took selfies with the Dalek and the snowmen because they were awesome.

Overall, I had a really good time at this convention. The Dealer’s Room is cool and the panels were interesting. I was able to wander the convention by myself and still have a good time. I am definitely going to this convention again in 2016.

Introduction to the Gaming Section!

Yesterday I played a board game with my friends. It was really fun and relaxing. This made me think about adding a new section to my blog. Gaming whether it’s with video games, board games, or card games is a hobby of mine. I love talking about games so I decided to add this section to my blog. I just want to give a quick rundown on what games I like to play:

Video Games:

I have been a proud Xbox 360 owner for eight years now! I have around 20,000 gamerscore and I’m pretty proud of that number. I haven’t upgraded to the Xbox One and I don’t really plan on it anytime soon. Laying down $500 for a console is still a lot of money for me. My boyfriend has it so I just use his. I’m playing through Murdered Soul Suspect on the Xbox One right now. I am definitely a Microsoft person. My favorite game on the 360 is Bioshock. I also enjoy Batman Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, The Simpsons Game, Gears of War, Halo, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption, and Injustice Gods Among Us! Currently, I have Gears of War Judgement, Far Cry 3, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, and Grand Theft Auto V on my gaming backlog for the 360.

I also own a purple Nintendo 3DS. I love Animal Crossing New Leaf! I have spent way too much of my time playing it. I am currently playing through Pokemon X.

Board Games:

I have recently gotten into tabletop games. Arkham Horror is by far my favorite game that I have come across. I also love Red Dragon Inn. I have the second edition with me in my apartment. I am currently discovering new board games that I love when I come across them.

Card Games:

I play Magic the Gathering occasionally. I would say that’s really the only card game I have become interested in so far.

That’s about all for the introduction! I plan on posting video game reviews or discussions. I also want to write about board games. That being said, I’m going to work on my gaming backlog.

Life Lately: First Week of the Winona Summer

Living in Winona for the summer has been fun. Last weekend, we had a bonfire along the Mississippi River. In Winona, there is a bridge across the Mississippi separating Wisconsin from Minnesota. On the Wisconsin side of the river, there is a beach with a bonfire pit. Bonfires are awesome because it’s a chance to catch up with friends and make smores and relax.

The weather has been pretty mixed. Some days it rains for an hour and then it’s sunny for fifteen minutes followed by more rain. On Sunday, I was able to walk around the big lake in Winona. Winona has two lakes separated by the main road into the town. The bigger lake is around 3.2 miles and it’s my favorite lake to walk. I took some pictures because it was breathtaking. The clouds were a dark grey color and the sun was setting and reflecting off of the trees.

No matter how long I have lived in Winona, its beauty never fails to amaze me. Before living in Winona, I could never imagine myself living in a smaller town. However, Winona has really changed my view on that. Winona is gorgeous and has a great community. I cannot imagine how I will feel when I graduate and the sadness I will have when I have to leave this town.

Bioshock Rapture: Review

Bioshock Rapture

The latest book that I finished is based on one of my all-time favorite video games. This book, Bioshock: Rapture, is a prequel novel based on the video game. Before I really talk about the plot of this book or go into my review, I’m going to talk a little about the video game because that will provide some insight into the book.

Bioshock takes place in 1960. The protagonist in the game is named Jack. After his plane crashes in the Atlantic, he finds shelter in a lighthouse. Upon entering the lighthouse, he discovers that it’s a secret entrance to Rapture. Rapture is an underwater city created by Andrew Ryan. When Jack discovers the city, he finds that the city has deteriorated. Atlas, a man in Rapture becomes Jack’s guide as he explains what has happened to the city. One cause of the city’s destruction is plasmids. Plasmids are chemicals that you inject that give you powers such as shooting electricity, throwing fireballs, and telekinesis. These plasmids are really what caused Rapture’s downfall. Over the course of the game, you meet characters and discover what really happened to this broken city.

This book starts before Rapture was created. Major characters in this novel include:

Andrew Ryan: Ryan is the creator of Rapture. He creates Rapture because he believes that the world will die at the hands of a nuclear holocaust.

Bill McDonagh: McDonagh is a British engineer and he is recruited by Andrew Ryan to help create the city and protect it.

Frank Fontaine: Fontaine is a criminal who sneaks his way into Rapture. He is the main antagonist in the story along with Andrew Ryan. Ryan and Fontaine are constantly fighting over the right to rule Rapture and this causes conflict within the novel and impacts the city.

Brigid Tenenbaum: Tenenbaum is a geneticist. She helped create the plasmids and the ADAM responsible for the destruction of Rapture. She was also a scientific assistant in the concentration camps in Germany in World War II.

As a huge fan of video games, I knew I had to read the book. The book itself starts off slow. It introduces key characters and it takes a long time before Rapture is built. Once Rapture is built, the book starts to get interesting. More characters in the video game are introduced and slowly Rapture is starting to deteriorate. I really liked how most of the characters were portrayed. Andrew Ryan seems like a good person at first, but he refuses to let anyone leave Rapture and this causes most of the citizens in Rapture to start revolting. As violence increases in the city, Ryan refuses to address the issue. I consider Ryan to be a dictator and as much as he preaches free speech in the city, he refuses to listen to people who don’t agree with him. I also really like Bill McDonagh. He is an interesting character because he knows that Rapture is slowly going downhill, but he respects Andrew Ryan. This internal conflict is shown throughout the story and I found it really fascinating to read about.

My Goodreads rating is three stars. I liked that this book gave new insight into the world of Rapture, however, I didn’t like this book as much as I thought I would. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the video game, but if you’re not interested in Bioshock, you wouldn’t find this book interesting.

Doctor Who Convention!!

Last week, I bought my tickets for a Doctor Who convention in May! It’s the weekend of May 29th-31st and I could not be more excited! Each year, I usually attend one convention and that’s CONvergence. This year I won’t be attending CONvergence because I want to do something else on the Fourth of July weekend. So I found out about this Doctor Who convention and I bought my ticket. I am super excited to meet more Whovians like myself and to cosplay. I’m planning an Amy Pond one for sure.

Doctor Who is probably the coolest TV show ever. I got into Doctor Who last summer because I just finished finals and I wanted something new to watch. I decided on Doctor Who because I heard good things about the show. I started with Christopher Eccleston. After watching the first episode, I wasn’t sure what I thought. It’s a really weird show, but I wanted to watch a full season before I made my decision. I was entranced after the first episode. Rose became my favorite companion and I absolutely loved the episodes in Eccleston’s season. I was really sad when he left the role, but then Tennant was amazing. I am currently on the last series of Matt Smith’s run and I am really enjoying him so I will be sad when he leaves.

As for cosplaying, I plan on doing an Amy Pond cosplay. I really want to buy a red plaid shirt and draw the tally marks to represent the silence. That’s a pretty simple cosplay that I could pull off. I also have my Tardis dress that I intend to wear for one of the days of the convention. I am really excited that I will be attending a convention this summer and I will definitely post the pictures that I take.

Until then, I will finish Matt Smith’s series… GERONIMO!

Life Lately: Free Comic Book Day & Avengers Age of Ultron!

The week before finals is always the worst. I am so glad it’s the weekend. I think my stress level this semester is the highest it has ever been in college. I cannot wait for this semester to be over. In between studying for finals, I participated in Free Comic Book Day and I saw Avengers Age of Ultron today!

Today is a special day because it’s Free Comic Book day! My local comic book store had fun stuff planned. As soon as I walked in, there were two racks full of free comics. I picked up three new comics which included a Doctor Who-themed comic, Pokemon, and The Avengers. There were also comic book artists from the Twin Cities who showed up. One artist was drawing free sketches. I knew I had to get one because this guy was really talented. I asked him to draw Poison Ivy and the sketch looks really neat. Free Comic Day is one of the best days of the year because now I have three free comics to read.

After free comic book day, me and a couple friends went to see Avengers: Age of Ultron. Here’s what I absolutely loved about this movie:

Scarlet Witch!

I loved the Scarlet Witch. I think Elizabeth Olson did a really good job portraying this character. I really like how she interacted with the Avengers team, especially Hawkeye. It’s also really nice having another woman on the Avengers team. I really like how she isn’t sexualized in the movie as she is in the comics. I love the red leather jacket and the black dress. She’s there to kick some ass, but she is wearing a normal outfit. It makes the character more believable. I know I made a post earlier about her character, but she was one of my favorite characters in this movie.

Ultron

Ultron is a pretty cool villain. He is something that was created to help protect the earth. He still believes in protecting the earth, but he feels like the planet should be extinct and then reborn. Obviously, this is not what Tony Stark had in mind when he created Ultron. Tony created an artificial intelligence that eventually became almost more intelligent than Tony himself. It was interesting to watch this scenario play out on screen.

The Humor

Marvel really knows how to make its audiences laugh. The lines in this movie are hilarious. Even though humanity may be close to destruction, the movie is still really light. The cast members themselves have great chemistry with each other and that’s really nice to see. Some superhero movies can be really dark and gritty, but Marvel always knows how to make an audience laugh.

Back Stories

In Ultron, there are so many different backstories that are revealed. Especially Hawk Eye and Black Widow had some very personal details revealed in this movie. It was really interesting to see.

My personal opinion: Avengers Age of Ultron is a great movie! It’s a great predecessor of the 2012 blockbuster Avengers film.
