Beware of Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak Movie Poster

Beware of Crimson Peak

Halloween is in two weeks so I’m trying to read as many horror books and watch horror-related films. Crimson Peak has piqued my interest for some time now. Guillermo Del Toro is a brilliant director and he directed one of my favorite underrated action movies Pacific Rim. Once I saw a final trailer, I knew I had to see this in theaters. Gothic literature is a huge interest of mine and this trailer really gave off this gothic/horror vibe.

Crimson Peak was pretty good, but I guess I was a little disappointed. Edith Cushing (played by Mia Wasikowska), is a writer who writes ghost stories. Her mother came back as a ghost and warns her of Crimson Peak. Edith meets Thomas Sharpe (played by Tom Hiddleston) He’s seductive and charming. His sister, Lucille (played by Jessica Chastain) is equally creepy. There’s something quite off about her. Edith and Tom fall in love and go back to his home and ghosts start appearing. The house itself is quite gorgeous. There’s a room that’s a two-story library with a piano. I am devoted to having a library in my house *hopefully,*

*SPOILERS*

I knew what was coming. Thomas and Lucille had been having sex and fell in love. When Lucille’s mother found out, Lucille kills her with an ax. Lucille and Thomas have a baby, but because they are brother and sister, the baby doesn’t survive. Thomas and Lucille set up a scheme to rob rich women of their money and use it for Thomas’s business. Though because Thomas fell in love with Edith, he wanted to protect her.

I guess I was expecting a surprise ending. Something that I thought would shock me to the core, but instead, I felt the movie was rather predictable.

That being said, I did like the movie. The cinematography is great and it was interesting seeing Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain in these types of roles. Plus a side note to Charlie Hunnam who is gorgeous in this movie <3.

I recommend seeing Crimson Peak. It wasn’t amazing, but it was still good to see around Halloween time.

My Fall TV Watchlist

Escaping stress while attending college is important to be able to stay calm and collected. Reading before bed, gaming in between classes, and watching TV are great ways I use to escape from stress. Fall television is always exciting because your favorite shows are coming back, but also great new TV shows are premiering. It makes it hard to balance all the TV you want to watch. Nevertheless, I have found so many exciting TV shows that are worth taking my time out and watching

Scream Queens

Scream Queens

I just started watching this a couple weeks ago. It’s so over the top when it comes to the stereotypes of sororities. I find it hilarious, but a few girls I work with hate it for how sororities are depicted. Also, Jamie Lee Curtis can do no wrong in my book so it’s great that she was picked for this series. Plus since it’s premiering around Halloween, it makes me more likely to really enjoy it.

Arrow, The Flash, and Agents of Shield; all the superhero shows

Grant Gustin
Grant Gustin

For those who don’t know, I love anything with superheroes in it. I will watch any superhero show that will air. The Flash is on its second season and I love all the characters. The chemistry between them is great to watch. Arrow provides me with mixed feelings. Arrow season #2 will forever be my favorite because Deathstroke is one of my favorite comic book villains. Arrow’s seasons haven’t been as good as season 2 in my opinion so hopefully, this season will surprise me. Agents of Shield I’m still on season #2 on Netflix, but I hope to watch season 3 as soon as possible. Also, I cannot wait for the premiere of Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow

Scandal

Scandal

Usually, political dramas aren’t really up my alley but Scandal always keeps me on the edge of my seat. Olivia Pope is a badass feminist in politics and she is smart and an intriguing character. I love watching the new episodes and each one ends on a cliffhanger. It’s gotten to the point where if I have even an hour of free time, I put on Scandal just so I can find out what happens.

What are you watching in this beautiful fall season? Let me know in the comments!

Chicks Dig Time Lords: Review

Chicks Dig Time Lords

Easily, one of the highlights of my summer was attending Console-Room, a Doctor Who-themed convention in the Twin Cities. I posted a recap about the convention in this post:  While attending, I definitely spent too much money. My purchases included two books: Companion Piece Women Celebrating Aliens and Tin Dogs of Doctor Who and Chicks Dig Time Lords.

Chicks Dig Time Lords is the perfect book to give any female Whovian. This book collects different essays written by intelligent, well-crafted women who belong to the Doctor Who fandom. It’s intriguing to see other women who are just as passionate about this sci-fi series as I am. It reaffirms my belief that Doctor Who is not just a TV show, but a way of bringing like-minded people together.

One of my favorite essays is written by Kathryn Sullivan who happens to be a Minnesota-based author. The best part is that Kathryn Sullivan used to be employed by Winona State University, which is where I currently attend school. Even more coincidental, Kathryn mentions that there used to be a Doctor Who club on my school’s campus. How awesome is that?! One of my friends is currently trying to start a Doctor Who club on campus which I do intend to be a part of. It’s cool to hear that before I was born, a Doctor Who club existed in Winona.

Another favorite essay of mine is written by Lynne M. Thomas. She talks about her backstory in the Doctor Who fandom and also about her daughter, Caitlin. Caitlin was born with a rare disorder that impacts her development and growth. Lynn brings her daughter to many different conventions. It again shows how liking Doctor Who can bring you closer to respectful and delightful people.

This book is a must-read for any fan of Doctor Who especially if you’re a feminist and a woman. I loved every bit of this book and the essays were intriguing and admirable. I definitely plan on attending Console-Room 2016 and I will be caught up on the New Series when I go.

Speaking of which.. how do people feel about the Sonic Shades & wearable technology.. Hmmm….

Life Lately: OktoberFest & Catching up with an Old Friend

October is upon us and I couldn’t be happier. The weather is chilly, and I was able to wear boot socks and a scarf today. The leaves haven’t started changing, but they will soon. This weekend was amazing because one of my best friends came to see me. It’s been a while since I have been able to catch up with her and it was much needed. We also attended Oktoberfest in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Attending Oktoberfest, I typically like lighter ale beer so I ended up purchasing Spotted Cow and Appleweizen beer. My friend purchased a darker ale beer that I actually enjoyed because usually, I’m not a dark ale kind of girl. One of my favorite moments was when my friend spilled beer all over her phone, oops. I couldn’t stop laughing for the rest of the day.

In the meantime, I’m planning a trip to the cities for Halloween because Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday and I need a reunion with my best friends. Now I need to start figuring out my costume because Halloween will be here before I know it.

Board Game Bucket List

I used to believe that gaming meant only using a console, handheld, or using a PC. This summer, when I stayed in Winona, I discovered a cute little gaming store called River Quest.

**Edit: 12/10/2017 I found out River Quest was closing!  Sad Day 😦 **

My roommate got a job working there, so I was in the store at least once a week or every other week. I got to know the owner, who is one of the coolest guys in the Winona area. I was opened up to a world of a different type of gaming.

I’m creating a Bucket List of Board Games that I haven’t played yet, but I intend to. I will sticky this to the front page of the Gaming Section and I plan to update it as I play new games. Also, I hope to post a review on some of these board games especially the ones with the strikeout through the name. In the meantime, enjoy my bucket list! Also, feel free to comment with various board games that I can add to the list.

Life Lately: Lots and Lots of Blogging

Blogging is a newfound leisure activity that I distract myself with. Starting the Bizarre Brunette over a year ago, I really wanted to inspire people to adore themselves for who they are. It’s easily a struggle I deal with on a daily basis. I know that there is nothing I can do to change my geeky, weird, bizarre personality so it’s a journey of basic acceptance.

Presently, I have been writing various blog posts for different websites. Yesterday, I submitted my article to Twin Cities Geeks about weight lifting. Lifting weights has been amazing because I have been seeing the results. I can see how strong I have become and it’s awesome. I feel like a badass. Being able to write about fitness to inspire others just assures me to continue on in my major. Health and fitness is a career I really and truly belong in.

Besides writing fitness-based articles for Twin Cities Geek, I have also been volunteering for the Winona State University Blog. My first post is all about surviving anatomy and physiology which is one of the toughest classes to take at Winona. I’m so glad to be done, but I’m proud that I accomplished and passed both semesters of A&P with flying colors.

So right now I’m keeping up with this nerdy masterpiece, Twin Cities Geek and Winona State University blog. I also journal every other day so I can easily say I write a lot. I feel that my writing has grown and become much better the more practice I have. I really love writing this blog and I’m thankful that I have followers who enjoy reading it too. 🙂

Tomb Raider: Gaming Review

This post will mark my first gaming review posted to the Bizarre Brunette. The last game I finished, Batman: Arkham Origins, I ended up posting that review on Twin Cities Geeks so I didn’t want to retype my thoughts on my personal blog. I can add the link to that review if you’re interested in reading it. Tomb Raider mesmerized me with the visually appealing island, Lara’s new re-invented look, and the fascinating story.

Tomb Raider is a prequel, telling the story of how Lara became as fierce as she is. The story starts with Lara and her archaeological team traveling to the island, Yamatai. Yamatai is located off the coast of Japan and was once ruled by Himiko, a sun queen who was blessed with powers for controlling the weather. Lara’s ship crashes on the island due to a horrific storm and with that experience, Lara starts to suspect that the storm has a magical pretense. She believes that something paranormal is stopping her team from leaving the island. Throughout the game, Lara uncovers the mystery behind Himiko, tries to help save her friends, and leaves the island.

Lara has been reinvented by wearing gray & white tank tops, brown cargo pants, and brown lace combat boots. Even though her french braid is no more, I really like her ponytail that’s loose and side-swept. It’s an accurate and more realistic take on the character.

Additionally, I really enjoy the weapons that Lara has access to. Her bow is the first weapon you gather in the game and after various levels, you can get fire arrows which are even more fun to use. The assault rifle is another definite favorite of mine, especially in huge fight sequences with multiple enemies shooting down at Lara. Weapon upgrades are awesome and I had the rifle fully upgraded first which made the weapon more useful. Lara can also gain skills that will help her throughout her adventure. There are skills that give you more XP to level up quicker, different take-down tactics, and more.

The characters that aid Lara add to the story. Conrad Roth is easily my favorite as he helps Lara through tough times and he gives her the pep talk she needs to be able to survive on the island. He is a crucial character in Lara’s development. Dr. James Whitman on the other hand is so arrogant, narcissistic, and annoying. If you beat the game, you will understand my frustration with Dr. Whitman.

Lara can stumble upon collectibles that enhance the campaign. Lara can find journal entries that reveal the ulterior motives of certain characters, she can discover hidden artifacts and she can uncover hidden tombs. The tombs themselves often have puzzles to solve to help uncover more collectibles. I like the puzzles because they’re really challenging so it’s satisfying to complete each tomb. The collectibles are worth grabbing and that’s the one part of the game I have left to complete.

Tomb Raider was an awesome game and I’m glad I found the time to complete it. It’s a great prequel that really brings Lara back into the next generation of gaming. I am looking forward to the sequel and it’s one reason why I really want to upgrade to the Xbox One.

Happy Gaming Everyone! 🙂

The Lives of Tao: Review

The Lives of Tao

Science fiction is probably one of my favorite genres to read. The genre is a fascinating realm containing aliens, science, and adventure. This novel combines all three into an amazingly fast-paced setting. The Lives of Tao by Wesley Chu is a fantastic and exciting book and it’s one of my favorite books I have read all year.

The Lives of Tao tells the story of Roen Tan. After a hard night of partying Roen wakes to hear strange voices in his head. Turns out, an ancient alien race called the Quasing inhabited Roen’s head overnight. His particular Quasing, Tao, is a Prophet, who wants to return to his home planet. Unfortunately, so do the Genjix, another faction of the Quasing and they’re willing to sacrifice the human race to achieve the same goal. Roen becomes trained in martial arts and old-school espionage to stop the Genjix and save the human race.

I really enjoyed Roen. Initially, he is really bothersome. He constantly whines about his boring job and he does nothing to improve his situation. Once Tao becomes a part of Roen, his character changes. Roen gains the motivation he lacks and becomes more aware of his surroundings. Roen in the end becomes a really engaging character because of his journey into becoming a Prophet agent. The bond that Roen and Tao have is heartwarming. Tao acts as his coach, friend, and father. Tao is brutally honest which furthers the development of their relationship.

Learning about the Quasing’s alien race and their history is also appealing. Each chapter page details a small paragraph regarding the past lives of the Quasing. It’s a complimentary feature of the main story. Another interesting tidbit is the Quasing have inhabited various historical figures such as Genghis Khan, Nazi guards, and members of the Roman empire.

The action sequences in this novel are fast-paced and gritty. It’s easy for my mind to wander and imagine Roen fighting various Genjix personnel. My favorite fight scene is at the Chicago Night club. I just imagine the dark club atmosphere with the neon lights as punches are being thrown and drinks and shattered glass litter the floor.

The Lives of Tao is a bewilderingly gritty, dark, and action-packed science fiction novel. The Quasing are fascinating creatures to learn about. Wesley Chu is an author I’m keeping tabs on because he knows how to write an exciting action sequence. The characters are intriguing and the writing is superb.

My next book is probably going to be horror related. That’s probably in honor of horror film director Wes Craven who passed away today! Scream will be one of my all-time favorite franchises. Now I’m going on this horror book kick which is perfect since October is right around the corner.

Photos of Happiness

Another Sunday has come and gone. I have been trying to take better-quality pictures for this post each week. Photos are a fun way to reflect on a past week. This post is pretty quick to put together so even if I become super busy, I can still update my blog. Here are my photos this week:

Captain America Door Decoration!

I live in off-campus/on-campus apartments owned by Winona State. My CA (community assistant pretty much the equivalent of an RA) made our building superhero-themed! I am on the floor with the Avengers theme and I talked to my CA and requested Captain America’s shield. She listened! It looks awesome and I’m pretty excited about it.

My roommate has an 8 AM so she is up really early! She left me this note on my whiteboard. I thought it was sweet.

First Day of Classes!!

The campus is booming and filled with life as the first week of classes is ensuing. Starting new classes is always an anxious time. You never know how hard the class material will be or how much time the class will demand. As always my greatest fear is not having enough time to devote to my classes. I’m really excited to share my new classes and what I hope to achieve from the material.

Advanced Fitness Programming:

This class makes me excited and anxious. The biggest project of this class is teaching a group fitness class. I’m really excited because teaching a group fitness class is a great opportunity and something I have never done before. Although I’m really nervous to tackle this project, I cannot wait for this project to be assigned. This class will also teach me how to better prepare fitness programs for different individuals. I’m going to learn so much from this class and I’m glad I’m enrolled.

Strength & Conditioning:

This course prepares students to take the Strength Training & Conditioning exam. If I take and pass the exam, I can be certified to be a Strength & Conditioning coach at a college or high school level. I may take this exam after the class, but who knows. I’m looking forward to this class because I have recently come to enjoy building up my strength. Muscular strength is an awesome goal for fitness to improve. I can now lift 20 lbs of dumbbells for my bicep curls and overhead triceps extensions. I really want to get up to thirty but that’s going to take a while. Anyway, this course will be difficult, but necessary for my major and my professional goals.

Program Planning

This class will be less intense than my other courses. The goal of this class is to design a program to help a problem on campus. This class will provide a lot of useful information about public health programs. I don’t think it really would relate to what I want to do with my major, but I will learn a lot from this course.

Global Nutrition

This class is actually a part of my nutrition minor. It will study nutrition and food habits across the globe. We will also have to present a recipe and a culture presentation at the end of the semester. I would say my knowledge is pretty limited when it comes to actual cultural cuisine. This class will hopefully give me new and healthy meals to prepare in college.

History of Rock & Roll

Gotta love those generals. This is the last general of my undergraduate college degree. It will fill my fine arts and music goal. This will probably be the class I don’t put a lot of effort into, but it still will be an interesting course.

These classes will be my entire life for the next couple of months. These classes will challenge me in new ways, but also allow me to advance in the health and fitness professional field. As of now, my first week of classes is going extremely well. I wish every freshman starting college this month luck in starting college. It’s time-consuming, and stressful but also a very rewarding experience.
