2017 End of Book Survey

Every year I participate in Perpetual Page Turner’s Annual End of Year Book Survey. You can find my 2016 recap here: End of Year Book Survey 2016. I like being able to recap what I read while also looking ahead to 2018. This year, I found myself reading more comics than books. I do love my comics, but in 2018 I want to read more books. I started the year strong, but graduating from college, moving to the cities, and starting my new job kept me from reading. Since I now have stability, I’m hoping to make reading a priority next year. I recommend any bookworm to fill out this survey because it’s incredibly detailed. I also ended up cutting out questions I didn’t have an answer for to keep this post from getting too long. Here are my answers:

Number Of Books You Read: 46
Number of Re-Reads: 2 < This is really great for me because I usually never do re-reads.
Genre You Read The Most From: Comics & Graphic Novels

[Image is a pink background with gray text that says Best In Books]

1. Best Book You Read In 2017?

[Image is a book cover called "This is Our Story" The cover features a white deer head mounted on a dark teal wall. There are five shadows nearby]

I nominated this book because it was thrilling and one of those books I ended up finishing in 5-6 hours. Five boys went hunting and only four returned. The murder of Grant seems to be an accidental shooting, or is it? Kate Marino is determined to uncover the truth of the shooting that day in the woods. This is one of the best mystery books I have read.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

[Image is a book cover the title is "Black Widow Forever Red by Margaret Stohl" It shows a woman with red hair crouching]

I thought I would enjoy this a lot more, but I thought it was okay. Granted I’m not a huge Black Widow fan so I think that’s why I didn’t really enjoy it. If you are a fan of the character, I think you will enjoy this series. Personally, wasn’t my favorite.

3. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

[Image is a book cover titled "Girl Code - Gaming Going Viral and Getting It done"]

I usually don’t read nonfiction, but this book caught my eye at Barnes & Noble. Andrea & Sophie were two teenage girls enrolled in a coding class in NY. They created a game titled Tampon Run to help alleviate the stigma behind periods. This book detailed their process of learning how to code the game. I have always been intrigued with code and I liked how they used their final project to bring awareness to a huge issue.

 4. Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

I nominated Geekerella by Ashley Poston. Any woman who identifies as a geek should read this book. It’s a geek girl re-telling of Cinderella and in many ways, I identify with Elle and her obsession with her favorite TV show. This book is so endearing.

5. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

I’m nominating Geekerella again for this award. What’s cooler than a princess leaning up against a food truck? Absolutely nothing.

6. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

David Charleston & Megan from the Steelheart series by Brandon Sanderson. Every time I talk about books, I bring up this series. Seriously, this is my favorite book series I have read in a while. I’m currently reading Calamity the third book in the trilogy and I’ll genuinely be sad once I finish it.

7. Best Comic Book Series in 2017 < I added this question it doesn’t appear in the original book survey

I cannot narrow it down so I nominate these series as any comic book fan should read them.

  1. Paper Girls (Image Comics)
  2. Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur (Marvel Comics)
  3. Cassian & KTSO One Shot (Marvel Comics)
  4. DC’s Rebirth (DC Comics)
  5. Moonstruck (Image Comics)

8. Worst Book Read in 2017 < I added this question because it doesn’t appear in the original book survey.

Killing Kate by Julie Kramer. This book was so boring, as I mentioned I do love a good mystery book, but I struggled so heavily getting through this book. It was somewhat depressing. Plus this book took place in Minnesota which made me more intrigued to read it.

9. Worst Comic Book of 2017 < I added this question because it doesn’t appear in the original book survey.

[Image is a comic book cover titled Moonshine Vol #1. It features a red background, with a white circle. In front of the white circle are three men carrying weapons]

I’m tied between Moonshine shown above and an Iron Fist comic book I borrowed from the library. Moonshine wasn’t something that kept my interest. Maybe I’m biased, but I’m not a fan of Iron Fist as a character. I think this comes from the fact that I’m not a fan of the Iron Fist TV show, but I was hoping to be impressed with the comic book instead and I wasn’t.

[Image is a pink background with gray font, it says "Your Blogging / Bookish Life"

10. Favorite review that you wrote in 2017?

My Dietland Review is my favorite review of 2017. I liked that I reviewed the book and talked about an important topic which is not assuming someone’s health status based on their weight. I was watching a series of videos from a vlogger and she was so toxic with saying that “fat acceptance” is promoting obesity. That’s not the case at all. It’s just saying you’re allowed to feel proud of your body even if it’s not where you want it to be. The diet industry can be toxic and Dietland is a book that discusses this in detail.

11. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I didn’t participate in anything book related, but I did attend three comic conventions where creators were selling comics. I brought around $80 of spending money so I could buy as many comics from creators as I could.

12. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

My biggest challenge with reading is fitting it in. I usually would read before bed, but I ended up being too tired and falling asleep before reading my book. Now I make a point to set a time to go to my bedroom and read before I get so tired that all I can think about is sleep.

13.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

Absolutely! I always set my good reads goal at 10 books and increase it every time I finish a book. Instead of feeling disappointed at the end of the year, I’m elated because I increased my goal each time I hit it.

[Image is a pink background with words in gray font that said "Looking Ahead"]

14. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2017 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2018?

I don’t have a specific book, but my bookshelf is overflowing with books I bought and haven’t read yet. I have even banned buying any more books until I read what I already have. That’s what I’m looking forward to in 2017.

15. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2018?

Making reading a priority again. This year wasn’t my strongest reading year because of so many big life changes occurring in a short amount of time. I have been bringing a book to work to read on my break and that helps me fit in reading.

My Favorite Video Game Worlds

[Image is two controllers, one Playstation and One Xbox controller side by side]

I’m a gamer for many reasons, but I have always liked becoming immersed in the story. Reading is great, but I don’t visually get to see the characters or the setting. A great video game to me makes me feel like I’m a part of that environment or I start to feel for the character I’m playing. This topic randomly popped into my head while I was eating my eggs this morning, I wanted to recall my favorite video game worlds I played through.

Rapture

Rapture is the fictional underwater city in Bioshock. Rapture is a 1940’s themed underground city created and constructed by Andrew Ryan. Bioshock is one of my all-time favorite video games because of how brilliantly Rapture is set up. Of course, I wouldn’t want to live there but the idea seemed great at the time. Setting up an underwater city where people could go in case things get bad above the water. I love the beauty in it even though I can still see the darkness.

Animal Crossing New Leaf

How could you not want to live here? Living in a cute town of your creation with animal neighbors and constructing lighthouses. Animal Crossing New Leaf is my guilty pleasure, a cutesy video game. When I first got my 3DS in college, this was the only game I played for about 5 months.

Colombia

Bioshock Infinite wasn’t too bad considering it didn’t take place in Rapture. Can you tell I love the Bioshock series a little too much? Colombia was the fictional universe in the sky and you could travel around by zip lines. That would actually be kinda cool yet freaky because I hate heights. It’s a beautiful environment with different influences from the United State’s founding fathers.

Boyfriends Choice: Assassin’s Creed

I asked the boyfriend what video game world he would want to live in, and he chose the world of Assassin’s Creed due to its expansive setting. I have to admit this would be a pretty cool place to explore.

Planet Comic Con!!

I cannot believe I haven’t already written about this already. I’m excited to announce in February 2018 I will be attending Planet Comic Con in Kansas City, MO, and meeting Jason Momoa! I am super excited to meet him even though I don’t watch Game of Thrones, I’m still a big fan of him as Aquaman from Justice League. My friend hasn’t been to a comic book convention so this will be a new experience for her too. We will be planning on driving there which I’m happy about because I enjoy road trips.

As far as our tickets go, me and my friend decided against getting a picture with Jason. It was expensive and the pictures to me look really awkward. An autograph though, that will last a lifetime. I’m planning on bringing a New 52 Justice League graphic novel for him to sign since I enjoyed Justice League and I’m interested in his solo Aquaman movie. Also Matthew Lewis aka. Neville Longbottom will be there and me and my friend might pay for his autograph.

Besides the autographs, I’m excited to spend money on comics and cosplay for this comic con. I have never been to Planet Comic Con so I have no idea what to expect. I’m a very casual cosplayer as in I would rather thrift a cosplay together than hand-sew pieces of cloth. I’m sure once I know who I’m cosplaying, I’ll make a post about it here.

February 2018 cannot come faster. I’m happy to escape the MN area and explore other comic book conventions out of state. The next comic con I want to attend would be C2E2 or New York Comic Con.

Ode To RiverQuest

It’s been six months since I graduated from college and there are times I miss being a student. Having Sunday relaxing days while I study for an exam or getting coffee and walking around town. One college memory that has stayed with me is my gaming marathons at my college game store River Quest Games. Unfortunately, I was alerted by a Facebook status that River Quest would be closing its doors permanently, and hearing this news left me feeling sad and nostalgic. I wanted to reflect on how much River Quest meant to me.

[Image is a screenshot from "River Quest Games" The message is as follows:

"I've heard you either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain. For those that know me, I am far too comfortable wearing a cape to be anything other than a hero. It is because of that, and with a heavy heart, I am announcing the closure of River Quest Games. I started RQ because of a passion for Magic and games, and that passion is burning just as fiercly. However, due to circmstances beyond my control, River Quest Games will be closing. I know there will be many feelings related to this announcement so I encourage you to come talk to me if you have any qestions and I will do my best to answer them. What does this mean logistically? River Quest Games last day of operation will be December 18th 2017. Although things didn't work out quite like I anticpated, I do not regret anything. There are so many people and experiences I have in my life because of River Quest, and for that, I am so thankful. My love of Magic and gaming will live on, and I hope we will find a way to continue to play and game together".]
Photo was taken from River Quest Games Facebook Page

I started attending River Quest two years ago after my best friend got a job there. I was pleasantly surprised by all the employees who were nice and relaxed. The owner does a great job of creating an accepting environment for all gamers. I also learned how to play Star Wars Destiny at a pre-release event River Quest hosted.

[Three dice lined next to each other. Two dice say RQ Games]
Souvenir dice from River Quest! Photo was taken by me.

As a broke college student, I never felt pressure to buy anything. I wish I could have supported River Quest more, but going to college is expensive and I was often living paycheck to paycheck. I drove to River Quest two weeks ago and I was surprised by how there weren’t as many people in the store. It made me sad to see that there were fewer people gaming.

I’m thankful for Riverquest and how I could hang out with friends, play Magic or the occasional board game and unwind after a tough week. One message I want to reiterate is to support your local game store! I wish I could have supported River Quest more to prevent them from closing its doors. Local gaming stores need your business. Plenty of customers will buy from Amazon or Target, but to get the absolute best customer service, it’s best to shop local.

The Punisher

If a new Marvel TV show is released on Netflix, I will watch it within the week.  Daredevil blew me away with the inner battle between Daredevil & Wilson Fisk. The Punisher was officially introduced in the second season of Daredevil and Jon Bernthal blew me away with his performance of the character. One scene in season #2 I always think back to is when the Punisher is at a pawn shop when the owner acknowledges to him he’s selling child pornography. The Punisher barely bats an eye as he walks back to the owner and seals his fate. This is realistic to The Punisher as a character because of how he uses violence to achieve justice. The Punisher season #1 is addicting, thrilling, and at times hard to watch.

The Punisher is probably the most violent graphic show Marvel has to offer. Frank is often severely beaten in some episodes along with a video being shown of a man being tortured. If violence is something that provokes you or prompts any memories you may have, I do not recommend watching this and instead quickly scrolling through Wikipedia for a summary of the show.

The Punisher begins with Frank Castle attempting to live a normal life. He’s contacted by a supercomputer hacker named Micro who believes there is a conspiracy involving the murder of Frank’s family. This first season details Frank’s struggle with PTSD in losing his family and also trying to move forward.

At first, I thought the first couple of episodes were a little bit slow. I did find by episode 3 or 4, I was more likely to watch the rest of the season. I also found 13 episodes seemed a little long. I would have been fine with 8 or 10 and I think it could have still effectively told the story.

I am so glad Karen Page is included in this first season. I like how Marvel turned her into a character that fights for the truth and she’s often seen defending the Punisher. My only wish is that she had a bigger role in the plot of the show.

I’m curious to know all of your thoughts on this first season. I’m interested in having the Punisher cross over into Daredevil or Jessica Jones because I think Jon Bernthal does a great job at accurately bringing the comic book character to life.

Steelheart Book Review

[Image is a book cover - Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. It appears that steel is ripped apart and a man is standing with his back to the cover]
Image from GoodReads.com

Yay, I’m finally writing a book review! I used to write book reviews quite frequently on this blog, but somehow I have gotten away from that. I think it’s because I’m finishing books at a slower rate due to my chaotic work week. Normally, I never do re-reads of books, but I made an exception with the Steelheart series by Brandon Sanderson. This series is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi trilogies! Six months ago, I bought the last book in the Steelheart series titled Calamity. It was collecting dust on my bookshelf which led me to just re-read the series once again to be more in the mood to finish Calamity. If you haven’t touched this book series yet, you are missing out on one epic sci-fi adventure.

Imagine a world where X-Men exist, but they are evil. In Steelheart, the mutants are called Epics born out of the rise of a bright orange star called Calamity. Once this star rose into the night sky, humans were given powers. David Charleston as a young boy witnesses his father murdered by a high epic known as Steelheart. Every epic has a weakness that can be used to destroy them. Steelheart’s weakness is unknown which makes him more powerful. David ultimately joins the Reckoners, a group of humans whose ultimate goal is to end the Epics and encourage the human race to fight back. This book details David’s taste of revenge to burn Steelheart along with his work alongside the Reckoners.

David as a character is just a cute, nerdy kid. He’s incredibly smart at detecting the weakness of epics. He’s also fearless; he puts his life on the line multiple times to get more information or to save a team member. Steelheart is absolutely brutal in his rule over the city of New Cago aka. Chicago. He’s the ultimate foe and it’s so satisfying to read about David and Steelheart’s showdown in the last couple of chapters of the book.

Besides David, the Reckoner’s team are great side characters. Megan is the one who puts herself at risk. Tia is the genius who constantly is chugging Coca-Cola. Prof is stoic, cold yet caring. Abraham is the weapons expert while Cody brings the humor with a mix of a Scottish / Southern accent.

There are multiple twists in this book I didn’t see coming. Re-reading the book was more enjoyable this time because I could pick up certain clues to lead to the twist at the end. I’m not going to spoil anything because it’s worth reading about for the first time.

Steelheart blew me away with its story, setting, and character development. This series is great for any comic book fan because I felt a lot of correlation between the X-Men comic book characters. Now, onto re-reading Firefight.

Justice League Review

Honestly, I have always preferred DC Comics over Marvel. Marvel makes excellent movies, but DC Comics has superheroes I enjoy reading about. With the failure of Batman vs. Superman, I was worried about how good Justice League would be. Wonder Woman was everything I wanted it to be and more, but that didn’t mean Justice League would be on that level. I am happy to say Justice League didn’t suck, it wasn’t a perfect movie, but it has the potential to grow into something better.

Spoilers. 🙂

Justice League sets the scene in the darkness of Gotham where Batman finds one of Steppenwolf’s Parademons. Batman soon realizes that shit is about to go down, so he calls Wonder Woman to help him form the beginnings of the Justice League. Batman recruits the Flash which has been detailed in the movie trailer while Wonder Woman meets with Cyborg. Eventually, the League teams up to stop the destruction of the earth and bring Steppenwolf to his knees.

The first positive thought I had was noticing that Superman’s suit is brighter in this movie. It’s refreshing to see Superman becoming more aligned with his comic counterpart. He’s funny and his priority has shifted to saving lives instead of destroying whole buildings like in Man of Steel. The after-credit scene with Superman and the Flash racing each other to the Pacific Ocean was lighthearted and helped me appreciate Justice League more. Speaking of The Flash, Ezra Miller didn’t do too bad in the role. When the announcement hit the internet of Ezra being in the Justice League, I was skeptical. I love Grant Gustin on the CW TV show and Ezra didn’t seem to be right. Ezra’s portrayal of the character was geeky, goofy, and overtly klutzy which worked in the film.

Can we take a minute and talk about that after the credit scene? Holy Shit Deathstroke appeared!!!!! He is one of my favorite comic book villains and I wasn’t expecting him to be at the end. It’s a perfect tie-in to the solo Batman film.

Ultimately, Justice League is a flawed, but fun film to see on the big screen. Many other internet bloggers and movie critics are slamming Justice League for a variety of reasons. However, I wanted my review to be all positive because I loved Justice League and I’m glad it wasn’t awful.

Scooby Doo Apocalypse Vol #1 Review

[Image is a comic book cover for Scooby Doo Apocalypse Volume #1 The cover features the Scooby Doo gang but more adult and mature]
Image Taken by Me!

When I was young, me and a neighbor would hang out and play Scooby-Doo Mystery of the Fun Park Phantom during sleepovers. I would usually play Velma because she was quirky and weird like me. Scooby Doo will always make me think back on my childhood and playing PC games. DC Comics owns the Hanna-Barbera license and decided to release titles with the Scooby Doo characters, Flintstones, and the Wacky Races. After a trip to the comic book store, I picked up the first volume of Scooby Doo Apocalypse. It’s a flawed comic book, but it’s fun.

Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, Scooby, and Fred all get a makeover in this updated comic. Something awful has hit the world the gang is a part of, people are being transformed into cannibalistic creatures and food becomes scarce. Can these pesky kids uncover the reason for this atrocity!?

One flawed part of this comic is the writing. It often felt repetitive at times, especially in the way Daphne and Velma interacted. In every issue was there an argument between Daphne and Velma about the cause of the epidemic. I don’t need to read about the same fight between two characters in multiple issues. Another flaw I found is in Daphne’s revamped personality. She was constantly abusive to Velma and Fred which seems so unlike her cartoon counterpart. Daphne can still be a badass female protagonist without punching or throwing things at other people. I hope in the future trades of this series that Daphne is improved upon and develops more as a character.

I do happen to like each character’s revamped look. Daphne may be obnoxious, but I like her purple camo look. Shaggy even looks a bit more hip along with Scooby who’s a technologically advanced super dog. Velma is the only character that didn’t really receive that treatment, but I feel her character is fine on her own.

I wasn’t expecting much from this comic, but it did surprise me how enjoyable of a read it was. There were elements I certainly wasn’t a fan of, but it didn’t completely turn me away from this series. DC Comics made a valiant effort in creating an interesting twist on my favorite childhood cartoon.

Life is Strange Before the Storm Episode #2 Review

Currently, I’m playing Deadpool, the game by High Moon Studios & Activision along with episode #2 of Before the Storm. Episode #2 was available for download on October 19th, 2017. I only was able to finish the episode a couple days ago due to my limited availability for gaming. Before the Storm is a prequel to Life is Strange which is one of my all-time favorite games I played this year. This prequel is told from the perspective of Chloe Price, Max Caufield’s best friend from their younger years. These episodes explain Chloe’s relationship with Rachel who if you played Life is Strange, know that Rachel disappeared in that episode. I do like to include spoilers in my video game reviews so please avoid them if you’re planning on playing Life is Strange or Before the Storm.

SPOILERS 🙂

[Image is a poster for Life is Strange Before the Storm. On the left is Chloe and on the right is Rachel]
Chloe on the left & Rachel on the right. *Image from Youtube*

Chloe Price and Rachel Amber are in Principal Well’s office due to their actions for skipping school in the previous episode. Rachel claims that ditching school was her idea which was the truth to avoid Chloe having to take the blame. One of the biggest actions you can make here is to decide to go along with Rachel or say she’s lying and take the blame. I chose to go along with Rachel because it was her idea to ditch school which Chloe went along with.

Chloe avoids her mom and David to hang out at the junkyard where she finds a beat-up truck. She tries to repair it as she would love to leave Arcadia Bay for good. Frank Bowers, Chloe’s drug dealer calls her about a possible way to escape the debt that she owes him by stealing drug money from Drew, her classmate. She searches Drew’s dorm and finds the money, but his younger brother Max arrives with Drew as she is leaving Drew’s dorm. Suddenly, Max is left in the dorm with Chloe as Drew is beaten by a fellow drug dealer looking for money. Another crucial decision in the game is to decide to intervene even though Drew specifically said not to, or to stay silent. I chose to stay silent to protect Max. After witnessing this, you can choose to keep the money or give it back to Drew. I chose to give it back to Drew because I couldn’t bear to keep the money.

Rachel and Chloe attend the Tempest which is a play Rachel was supposed to play the lead in, but Principal Wells banned her from performing after ditching school. Rachel ends up being the lead in the play along with Chloe and they perform the play together. It’s a huge bonding moment for the two of them. After the play, they agree to leave Arcadia Bay and move to LA.

Rachel and Chloe go to Rachel’s house for dinner. This is a huge deal because Rachel’s father was seen by Chloe and Rachel making out with another woman. Rachel is confused and heartbroken over her father’s actions and Chloe thinks he’s an ass. A fight erupts after dinner where Rachel’s father reveals that woman is Rachel’s biological mother. [insert drama music here]

End of SPOILERS!

Before the Storm is fun especially if you really enjoy Life is Strange, but the story feels more character driven, than plot driven. The game doesn’t really have a plot to it, it’s more to tell Chloe Price’s story outside of the little knowledge we knew about her. I think that makes this version much weaker than Life is Strange, but again I am enjoying playing each episode. I can’t stress enough how much I recommend Life is Strange and if you haven’t played it, you’re missing out.

Halloween / Call of Cthulhu D&D

Halloween was almost two weeks ago, can you believe how fast time is passing? Halloween as I probably have mentioned numerous times on my blog is my favorite “holiday” even though it’s technically not a holiday. This year, I was able to get together with a D&D group and play Call of Cthulhu 7th edition and I had a blast. I wanted to briefly recap my 3-hour gaming episode for Halloween on my blog.

Before summarizing the story, I wanted to share a couple details about the Call of Cthulhu gameplay. When you roll, you always want to roll low, rolling high is considered a failure typically. For example: If I wanted to fight a creature, rolling a 20 is better than rolling a 90. Also when players start the game, they don’t know their own skills. To reveal your skills, you have to roll close to your skill. For example, my character had to pass the spot hidden check, I rolled a 67 and the GM revealed that my character had at least 67 to the identify/listen skill. Anyway, now onto the recap of the campaign.

[Image is a "Call of Cthulhu" character sheet. It lists my character name "Tamela Wissler" and how old I was, and where I was from along with my skills]
Character sheet

My character started off in a locked room in an asylum. I glanced into the mirror to realize my head had been shaved. I was let out of my cell and followed the other players to a room where we could hear jazz music. The GM forced us to this room because of creatures chasing us down the hall. My character was in the jazz room where I picked up a saxophone, nicknamed “Johnny” to use as a weapon. Unfortunately, another player failed an insanity check after looking at herself in the mirror and bashed me in the head with a cornet. I was now bleeding from the back of my head. We followed this old lady to a library where a little girl was sitting and reading a book. I used my library check to discover a map of the asylum so all the characters could leave. Another character ended up staring into a statue, went insane, and attacked the other players. I was able to calm him down because apparently, I’m also good at using psychology.

After that ordeal, we headed down to the morgue for medical supplies. Suddenly, the dead body lying in the middle of a table grabbed one of my other players by the arm and was squeezing him. I kept rolling too high so I would try and smash him with Johnny, but I missed every single time. More bodies came back to life in the morgue forcing the players to go to patient records where we found out why we were locked in the insane asylum in the first place aka. revealing our characters’ names and abilities. My name was Dr. Tamela Wissler, a scientist put away in the asylum due to my religious ramblings. I’m also an above-average brawler so I should have been easily able to use a saxophone as a weapon but failed miserably. Our group neared the end of the session with knowledge of our characters, but still, a long way to go to escape the asylum.

[Image is me wearing a "Where's Waldo" Halloween costume complete with the hat, glasses and the shirt]
Waldo Costume

I tried to keep the recap brief without missing anything in the campaign. To celebrate Halloween, I also dressed up as Waldo from Where’s Waldo for fun. Call of Cthulhu was the perfect game to play on the spookiest night of the year.
