Young Justice Review

I love to read, but sometimes I need a break from books. I love books, but I also love manga and trade paperbacks. When I did my book haul, over half of what I bought were comic books because I just wanted to read and page through the artwork. Young Justice is a trade paperback I finished a couple days ago and I loved it. The TV show on Netflix is worth checking out before reading this series.

Young Justice

Young Justice

Teen Titans was a cartoon network show that aired around 2003 ish? I remember me and my friend who would pretend to be members of the Titans and just run around her house and pretend to fight crime. Young Justice really reminds me of my love of Teen Titans. Young Justice appeared on my Netflix feed because it was recommended to me. I started watching multiple episodes at once and I really liked the action and all of the characters.

Christopher Jones is a local Minnesotan comic book artist which is pretty cool because I like supporting artists who love Minnesota as much as I do. It’s exciting because this summer I plan on attending CONvergence. CONvergence is a local con in my area right in the heart of the Twin Cities. Christopher Jones is going to appear as a guest of honor along with Greg Wiseman the creator of the Young Justice TV Show. I bought this trade paperback because I wanted to be caught up on the series and maybe I could get it signed by Christopher or Greg.

If you’re unfamiliar with Young Justice, the characters are the young apprentices of Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter. Superboy is an exception as he was a clone created by Cadmus which is seen in the first two episodes of Young Justice. He desperately wants to be known as Superman and it’s sad to see this struggle throughout the first season.

I really enjoyed this trade paperback in part because it discusses the origin stories of each of the characters. For some, this may seem really redundant, but for a newbie comic book reader like myself, it’s a nice brief history of each character. I was especially unfamiliar with Miss Martian/Megan’s back story so hearing that was fun. I felt that the writing in this trade paperback was great because it really showed off the personalities of each character. Megan is probably my favorite because she’s so spunky, upbeat, and energetic.

I plan on buying the next edition sometime soon and hopefully watch all of Young Justice by the time CONvergence comes around in July. In the meantime, I highly recommend checking this series out especially if you were also a fan of Teen Titans back in the day.

To My Favorite Kitty

Yesterday I found out that my oldest kitty Jasmine has a tumor in her left lung. At this point, I don’t know what was going to happen, but as my mom called me in tears I voted to put her down. Jasmine was turning 17 this year so she lived a very long and joyful life. It still makes me sad as I won’t be able to be home for another week and a half. So when I go home the basement will feel empty as if something will always be missing.

Crazy Cat Lady.jpg
The exact moment I became a cat lady.

Jasmine has been in my life since I was 5. My dad was a cat person, but my mom.. not so much. However, my dad thought a cat would fit our lifestyle a bit more since my dad and mom both worked and me and my brother were in school. We went to the humane society and fell in love with Jasmine and her sister. Though her sister was adopted before we could adopt her. My mom thought of Jasmine after Aladdin which was my brother’s favorite Disney movie. The name stuck.

Jasmine was timid and would hide in the basement. She eventually warmed up to us, but it took a while. Late at night my dad would get home from work and go down to our basement where Jasmine would leap into his lap and fall asleep. It didn’t take long for Jasmine to become his cat. I remember both me and my brother brought Jasmine to our class for show and tell. I carried Jasmine on our old red deck and held her like a sac of potatoes as my family calls it. My dad yelled at me because Jasmine could have escaped. I used to carry string and dangle it in front of Jasmine and she would bite it and chase me around the house. Jasmine loves lounging on our porch and rolling around on our linoleum with cat nip.

After my dad passed, Jasmine was different. Her late-at-night buddy wasn’t around. After getting the Xbox though, I was downstairs every day at least. I would sit in the recliner and call Jasmine’s name and she would run from the office to hop into my lap. She wouldn’t face me because she was so focused on the TV. I joked that she was my gaming cat.

As unfortunate as this is, I’m glad that I grew up with cats. Cats aren’t the mean creatures that everyone says they are. They’re compassionate, lazy, and loving animals that deserve attention. I will forever be a cat lady and that’s because of this amazing soul that came into my life and brought me so much happiness. I will miss you and love you forever Jasmine.

Here Kitty Kitty Board Game Review

Last week, I visited River Quest randomly after I got off work. I was feeling frustrated with college and life in general, so it was nice to procrastinate for an hour or so. River Quest’s board game of the week was called Here Kitty Kitty which is about collecting cats. Of course, I wanted to play this game so we broke it out and played one round.

This is the scorecard of the game. The goal is to move the kitties to your house because you get more points that way. However, there are cards in this game that can cause some ruckus which include stealing cats, passing cats to your neighbor’s house, and preventing people from stealing your cats. After all the cards have been used, the game ends and the score is totaled. The one with the highest score wins.

Here Kitty Kitty Game.jpg

The cats remain in the center and you can take a cat and add it to your board. Each turn consists of two actions. This includes taking a cat and placing it in your yard, moving a cat from the yard to the porch, or moving it into the house. Also playing a card counts as one action so it’s important to plan each turn effectively!

Here Kitty Kitty Game 2.jpg

This is the rule card below. You can also plan out which color of cats are on your property. So getting all grey cats or all black cats will earn you more points.

Here Kitty Kitty Game 4

Being the cat lover I am, I liked this game. I liked that it was simple to learn, but also was over quick. Sometimes longer board games make me lose my attention span, but this one was perfect. If you are a cat lady like myself, this game must be in your closet.

Comic Book & Book Haul

Sometimes you just need to purchase something for yourself. A little self-love never hurts anybody. Anyway, I have been feeling a bit of comic withdrawal as I haven’t bought a new graphic novel in at least…. a year. That’s what happens when you’re in college and can’t work all the time due to having so much stuff to do. Money goes to three places: Savings account, groceries, and gas. I was able to purchase comic books and I want to make a post of everything I purchased!

Young Justice Volume 1

Young Justice

Christopher Jones is a comic book artist from Minnesota and I love supporting local talent. I’m currently attempting to watch Young Justice on Netflix, but I’ll admit I’m watching at a very slow pace. I wanted to read the comic book because I really love the show plus it might get a third season so I’m helping to secure a new season by watching.

Grayson Volume 1 Agents of Spyral

Dick Grayson Volume 1

Anything with Nightwing in it and I’ll be 100% interested. That’s why I need to finally beat Arkham Knight because I heard he makes an appearance. Anyway, I have been wanting to read this series for quite some time, but I never got around to it. So when I was shopping around for which comic book I wanted to purchase, I thought of this one immediately.

Sex Criminals Volume One

Sex Criminals

If you haven’t heard of this book, it’s quite interesting. Basically, this couple has sex and when they both have an orgasm, they stop time. This novel is so out there and I’m excited to read it.

Poison Study

Poison Study

My best friend raved about how much this was her favorite book. She has re-read it so many times and recommended I read it. Finally, two years later I have ordered it and have it waiting to be read. The main character got in trouble with royalty and was sentenced to death. Instead of being executed, she had a choice of becoming a poison taster. The premise seems really interesting.

Sailor Moon Volume 1

Sailor Moon

So a month ago, I agreed to be in a Sailor Moon cosplay group. It’s great because we are hand-making our cosplays, but I also know nothing about Sailor Moon. I thought I should change that so I bought the first manga volume and I’m going to watch the new series over the summer when I have more time.

Let me know what you’re reading and if you’re a Sailor Moon expert, let me know in the comments. Happy Friday!

Life Lately: Exercise Conference

Since I’m in my last full-time semester at school, my life has been hectic. This weekend has been time for relaxation since me and the boyfriend adventured to St. Paul to attend a conference for my major. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) runs the conference and they set guidelines on physical activity for adults. I was required to go, but I’m really glad I did. Throughout the day I continually learned new information about health & wellness.

The conference took place at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. It was an absolutely gorgeous campus with beautiful brick buildings. I loved how small the campus was! Winona is a smaller campus too and I love that every building is within walking distance. We arrived at around 7:30 or so and just explored the building before the first speaker was supposed to appear.

In exploring the student union/Coeur de Catherine building, I found a Lucy Statue. The Peanuts hold a special place in my heart because the writer Charles Schultz is born and raised in Minnesota. There are various Peanut character statues scattered around St. Paul so if you’re in the area, try and find them all!

Lucy Statue St. Cates.jpg

After finding our seats at the conference, we listened to the first two speakers talk about Interval Training. Research has concluded that Interval Training is as beneficial as endurance training. running or biking for an hour. So if running is exhausting and boring, try doing an Insanity class because you burn more calories and have plenty of health benefits.

The third speaker emphasized the dietary guidelines and how bacon may not be as bad for us as we were led to believe. There is so much we have learned about nutrition over the years. We used to think cholesterol was evil, but we are finding more research about how eating a lot of cholesterol doesn’t lead to heart disease. There is so much more research that needs to be done about nutrition.

American College of Sports Medicine April 1st 2016

It was a long day but it was cool to go to these speakers and comprehend all of the scientific information. Attending this conference proves to me that I’m in the right major and shows my passion for continually learning about physical activity and nutrition.

Batman V. Superman *spoilers*

Me and my boyfriend are huge DC fans. We were both eagerly awaiting the release of Batman V. Superman to see how it would set up the movie verse of the Justice League. I would say I do tend to lean more toward DC than Marvel, but I like both companies and characters within that universe. I saw this movie on Saturday and I was expecting to hate it. The reviews about this movie have really been awful. I have seen geeks complain about how no one should pay to see this movie. That’s definitely over-exaggerated. This movie has a lot of flaws, but there were parts I liked. I would rate it a 7/10.

What I Liked:

Ben Affleck is actually a really decent Batman. This is why I never hate on a casting choice. Everyone was all angry because Heath Ledger was cast as Joker and now we know how great his portrayal of the character was. When I think of Batman as a character, I think of how truly terrifying he is. Ben Affleck really gave off that vibe. There were several times when he would just appear, and you would get startled. This feels more like an accurate portrayal of the character.

Wonder Woman is another strong aspect of this movie. Gal Gadot does a fantastic job. I wish that it would have been kept under wraps instead of shown in the trailer. It would have been more exciting to see her on-screen without knowing she was going to be there. I’m definitely looking forward to her solo film when it comes out next year.

What I didn’t like:

Jesse Eisenberg is an example of a complete miscast. Lex Luthor seems regal, professional, and serious. Jesse Eisenberg was a mess throughout this entire movie. He felt more like the Joker in his personality than Lex. Zach Synder could have wanted Jesse to act this way, so maybe the fault is on Zach, but this was just a little too much. This is definitely a weak point in the movie.

This movie had too much stuff going on in it. It’s trying to build up this hatred between Batman and Superman, trying to fit in a major villain for a team-up between the two heroes. Doomsday, adding in members of the Justice League, Lex trying to bring the two heroes to fight, and more. I mean I felt overloaded trying to comprehend every single aspect of this movie. Synder tries to throw everything in this movie so that a Justice League movie can happen. I understand why, but I think it harms the movie more than helps.

Finally, this movie felt very boring at times. There are a lot of build-ups, which is great, but it made the movie feel a lot longer. It’s 2 1/2 hours long and you can definitely tell because the movie just felt boring at parts.

Overall, if you’re a fan of DC comics, I suggest seeing this movie. However, it has a lot of flaws and it still feels pretty average. It’s nowhere near some of my favorite superhero movies because it just didn’t excite me like I wish it would have. On the bright side, I can’t wait for the Wonder Woman movie. Hopefully, November 2017 will come rather quickly.

Team Batman OOTD

I’m so happy to announce my first OOTD blog post! I want to give a shoutout to my amazing and talented photographer roommate. She takes gorgeous photos. I have linked her Facebook page and her Instagram page down below so check it out! Even if you aren’t from the Minnesota area, she takes great photos to peruse.

Anyway, this inspiration comes from the fact that Batman Vs. Superman opened this weekend. I have seen the movie and I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I hope to post my review eventually. I love these Batman leggings that I found. They are so comfy and they aren’t made out of spandex. Spandex leggings aren’t typically my favorite since they cling to my body. These leggings are mostly made of polyester and so they are more appropriate for lounging.

My second favorite part of this outfit is my combat boots. When I consider my style identity, it doesn’t include heels. I work out often so it’s more beneficial to me to be in sneakers versus heels or sandals.

I absolutely love these pictures and don’t forget to check out my friend’s page.

5 Fandom Friday: 5 Favorite Places to Buy Geeky Items

5 Fandom Friday

Today’s prompt is all about our favorite places to buy geek items. I love trying to incorporate geek clothing into my lifestyle and I have random action figures around my room. I love being a geek and expressing what I love on a daily basis. So here are my favorite places to buy geeky clothing and/or items.

Hot Topic

I love Hot Topic. I can find really comfy t-shirts that have cool designs. I bought my Daredevil t-shirt there last year after the Netflix show premiered and it’s my favorite. They sell different kinds of designers including Welovefine and HerUniverse which are both my favorites of mine. It allows me to find these items in a store versus ordering online which is very mixed for me. I also bought my Tardis dress from Hot Topic when I found out I was going to the console room.

My Tardis Dress is a favorite in my closet.

River Quest Games

It’s so important to find a local store that you absolutely love. This store is what I love about being a geek. The owner is a good friend of mine and he’s the nicest person I have met in this area. He is constantly trying to create a safe environment for geeks and I appreciate that. There is a wide selection of board games which is what I’m there for. I actually just got a t-shirt from here after interviewing him for an article I’m writing. I love it. It’s great to support a local business

River Quest Games

Her Universe

This is similar to Hot Topic since Hot Topic does sell Her Universe. I love Ashley’s devotion to inspiring young girls to like whatever they want. I was once nominated for her Fangirl of the Day and I was so proud. Plus they are planning some activewear sometime soon and I couldn’t be more excited. Death Star workout pants would be so comfy.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble has become much more geek trendy lately. In the summer they usually have weekly themes that highlight fandoms. They did a week on comics, manga, and Wizard of Oz. I actually just ordered some comic books a couple days ago from here and I can’t wait to post the haul online. I always have to restrict my shopping when I go here, but it’s so worth it.

Design By Humans

I discovered this site by accident, but I love it. It’s a really cool t-shirt and tank top design but designed by artists. So you end up buying support from an artist instead of a site. I think this idea is super cool. I actually found this by reading a fashion blog called Geek Pinata. She advertised the batman and superman shirts she found. I checked out the site and found this cool Bioshock tank top. I had to really resist not purchasing it, but the artwork is really intriguing. I’m not artistic whatsoever, but I love supporting someone else’s talent.

Have a Happy Easter weekend! 🙂

Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of Tomorrow 2.jpg

Legends of Tomorrow is a show that I have a love/hate relationship with. I blogged some time ago about this show and how I was very excited to start watching it. Being that I’m indeed a Doctor Who fan, this felt like Doctor Who with superhero companions. Plus any reason to see Arthur Darvill back on TV is good enough for me. Also, I absolutely adore Caity Loitz. She’s my favorite version of Black Canary as I have never been a fan of Laurel’s portrayal of the character.

So I start watching and I thought this show had a lot of potential. The episodes were creative and still action-packed. Plus the amount of crossovers with Arrow is fantastic. However, I’m not sure if I love the direction in which Legends of Tomorrow is going. I contemplated dropping this show out of my TV schedule.

Let’s talk about the Kendra/Chay-Ara and Ray Palmer romance. I’m not a fan. Kendra just realized she’s this ancient Egyptian goddess from another life. Let’s explore her feelings behind that. Obviously, the TV creators were more focused on giving her a lover especially since her main squeeze was killed off in the second or third episode.

This is the problem with putting women on TV. I want strong, independent women who don’t need a man to be happy. In the first couple of episodes, they focused on a friendship between Kendra and Sara Lance. That would have been really cool to develop that friendship so they both can kick ass together. Instead, they start this love triangle between Firestorm and Ray Palmer. I could not be more disappointed. Love triangles need to be trashed and I’m tired of seeing them in every form of media. UGH. Kendra has the potential to be a really cool female character, but the writing is really ruining it for me.

I think Legends of Tomorrow can end on a high note if they dump the love triangle. We shall see if I continue watching the series.

My Health & Fitness Story

I wanted to write something a little more personal on my blog today. I have hinted that I’m a college student and if you didn’t know already I study Exercise Science. It’s a little self-explanatory, but it mainly discusses how the body responds to exercise and the benefits of physical activity. It’s something I’m absolutely passionate about because physical activity has so many health benefits. I haven’t always been physically active, but I changed my ways and started including exercise into my routine about four years ago, so here’s my story behind how exercise really changed my life.

Growing up, I was a figure skater. I didn’t participate in any sports as I didn’t find something that I was passionate about. In middle school, I remember being embarrassed about having to run the mile. Running is an activity in that I have a love/hate relationship as a result. As I moved into high school, I didn’t pay much attention to what I ate. My friends would ask me to go to the gym and I declined. More than likely it was due to intimidation as I can definitely say at that age, my friends were more physically active than I was.

As I was coming to college, I did not want to gain the freshman 15. This is extremely vain and just typing this out makes me cringe. I was dedicated to exercise and I even used some of my graduation money to buy workout clothes.

I started by going to some of the fitness classes my college had to offer. They were fun! I would be sore for three days and it would be hard to walk. It probably wasn’t the best way to get started, but it worked. I started going to classes and my favorite was Turbo Kick. Kickboxing is such a fun workout and I recommend trying it. It was so fun that even though I was tired, I still enjoyed it. At first, I couldn’t get through the entire class. I had to stop and take breaks and wait for my heart rate to come down. Eventually, I was able to go through the entire class and I felt really proud of myself.

I pretty much did only cardio for about two years. In 2014, I decided to lift weights. I wanted to get stronger and once I got more into my major, I learned different techniques. This was slow and steady progress, but I can say that I definitely have gotten stronger not only in my arms but my back and chest. I have also been able to use the bench press something I would not have dreamed of when I entered school.

Exercise changed my life. Ever since adding exercise, I have felt more secure with my own body. I feel sexy, strong, and powerful. Besides that, my stress has been lower. It’s easier to walk up a flight of stairs or even to be on my feet running errands all day. I can carry groceries up to my apartment without my arms burning.

Anyway, to wrap up this post, I just want to say that it’s never too late to start becoming physically active. Physical activity really has a lot of health benefits and it doesn’t have to be done at the gym! It can be a simple walk/bike ride or doing an activity in the comfort of your own home. I really am not trying to over exaggerate but Exercise was life-changing for me.
