The Bone Collector: Review

It’s a lovely Saturday morning and I have my cup of coffee nearby. It’s the perfect time to write a book review about the latest book I read: The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver.

I was in high school when my mom had a movie playing titled the Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. I never knew that this movie had a book until very recently when I was browsing Goodreads. I knew I had to add this book and I finally purchased this a month ago.

The novel stars Lincoln Rhyme, a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. He is a forensic scientist and very well known in New York for his intelligence and arrogance. He is injured in an accident three years ago and he is a quadriplegic. At the beginning of the book, we see that he is losing his will to live and even seeks out a doctor to help end his life. His old partner from the police department, Lon Sellitto, comes to Lincoln with a new case. A man has been found buried but his skin had been sliced off to the point that the bone of his finger had been exposed. Lincoln, intrigued with the case, comes back to solving crimes. When working on the case, Lincoln meets Amelia Sachs. They form a unique bond that progresses along with the story.

I didn’t really have any complaints with this book at all. It was fast-paced and I didn’t see the ending coming at all. Then again, I never finished the movie so it was still a surprise for me. I rated this book four stars on Goodreads because I thought it was fantastic and I really adore Lincoln as a character. I plan to read more of this series when I have time!

Scarlet Witch Poster

One movie that I am getting excited about is Avengers Age of Ultron. Scarlet Witch, the daughter of Magneto and sibling to Quicksilver, is going to be in it! There is a new character poster released with her and I absolutely adore it!

Scarlet Witch

When I first saw pictures of the Scarlet Witch, I was intrigued. The outfit doesn’t really look like the comics, but I think it’s much more practical. In the comics, Scarlet Witch wears this leotard crop top ensemble. The red color of the outfit doesn’t help with the sexism in her character because red is such a passionate and sexual color. In the movie, it looks like she’s wearing a red jacket with a black dress and black combat boots. Her outfit in the movie looks more menacing. It’s easier to take her seriously if she is dressed like a normal human versus a bombshell.

Overall, I’m super excited for the Avengers! The first Avengers movie made me into a comic book & superhero fan. Now my love of superheroes has gone way past the movies and TV shows. Comic books and graphic novels are a huge interest and passion of mine.

Avengers Age of Ultron is being released on May 1st and I am going to be in the theater on opening night.

Magers & Quinn & Boneshaker Books

My bookstore hunt around Minneapolis is complete! Throughout this exploration, I have eleven new books and five comic books in my collection. The three bookstores we traveled to include: Magers & Quinn, Book Trader, and Bone Shaker Books.

Magers & Quinn is located in the Uptown Shopping District in Minneapolis. I have been to this book store before, but it’s been a while. Upon entering the store, I immediately gravitated toward the fictional section. While shopping, I saw my Anatomy & Physiology lab professor from Winona State University! It’s refreshing having a conversation with one of my past professors especially because she still recognizes me.

I ended up buying four books because they were three or four bucks apiece! I liked this book store and I would go back.

The last place on our list was Boneshaker Books. This store is located right near the Augsburg campus in Minneapolis. The store itself is pretty tiny which I liked. My favorite part about this store is the used book section. Each book is around three-five dollars. The proceeds from the used book section go to helping to fund reading material for women in prison. The fact that the used books are cheap and go to a good cause made me want to purchase at least one book. I ended up finding two books while my roommate found four hardcover books worth around twelve dollars! I also talked with one employee who graduated from Winona State University! She and I talked about campus, past professors, and our experience. Boneshaker Books have a great atmosphere, polite employees, and interesting novels on the shelves. I definitely want to go back when I am back home over the summer.

The bookstore hunt is officially over, but this spring break has been memorable. I have so many different books to read and I am getting excited to read as I write this post. I definitely would go back to Boneshaker Books. I cannot wait for my summer to start so I can start flying through this wonderful reading material I have purchased.

Once Upon a Crime & Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore

Today, me and a couple friends explored some local book stores in Minneapolis. I absolutely love Barnes & Noble, but I wanted to find smaller book stores to support.

Once Upon a Crime is located in Minneapolis off of South Lyndale Ave. It’s filled completely with only mystery and crime stories. Once you walk in, you realize how small and adorable this store is. I really enjoyed that this store features local Minnesota authors. Jessie, the employee working is super knowledgeable and helpful.  She led us down to another room that contains discount mystery books. Me and my roommate spent at least an hour wandering this room and piling up hardcover books we wanted to read. I ended up purchasing three books: The Catalan Book of Secrets by Jessica Lourey, Privileged Information by Stephen White, and The Murder at the Vicarage Carriage by Agatha Christie. As we were leaving the store, Jessie gave us a free copy of her own book published!  She also gave me and my roommate an awesome tote bag that says “One More Book Won’t Hurt”.

This book store is terrific! I felt like I had a personal relationship with the store and the employee which is something you could never get at Barnes & Noble. I would easily go back to Once Upon a Crime again.

After Once Upon a Crime, we drove to Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore. As much as I love a good mystery, I also really enjoy a good science fiction & fantasy novel. I was amazed at all the Star Trek & Star Wars novels in the store. I ended up gravitating towards this book with this lovely cover called “The Court of the Air” by Stephen Hunt. The cover has an intricate air balloon on it and it definitely has more fantasy elements than science fiction. I would go back to Uncle Hugo’s. I opened up a discount membership for any future visits.

Tomorrow I start again on the book store adventure and I cannot be more excited.

Life Lately: Science Museum Trip!

Today I went to one of my favorite places in Minnesota, the St. Paul Science museum. Starting February 20th, the Science museum was doing a space-themed exhibit until September. Since I’m the secretary of the Astronomy club and my best friends are the president and VP, we made a trip. Today we took the two-hour trek to the science museum.

When we got there, we got tickets to the exhibit and the Omni-theater. The two showings we saw were about the journey to space and the Hubble telescope. The journey to space movie was really fascinating. It takes a lot of time and effort to come up with the technology that brings people up to space. After watching that, I felt so small. The galaxy and our universe are so big and we haven’t really explored much of it yet. I really hope in my lifetime that we will be able to explore more of what’s beyond the stars. The second movie was about the Hubble telescope. It’s orbiting around the earth! It also displayed in the movie how astronauts had to take trips to help fix the telescope.

Besides the Omni-theater, we went to the actual exhibit. It was really busy so I didn’t have time to really do all the activities that were there, but we did wait in line to be in this machine for about five minutes. It simulated what it’s like to be weightless in space. It was really interesting but at the same time, I felt really dizzy afterward. We don’t even realize how beneficial gravity is until we are in space and it’s nonexistent.

Our group took a lot of pictures! It worked out because all the club officers made the trek! So it was the group of five who wandered the museum and learned cool new stuff about space! The science museum is my all-time favorite place to go and it was really interesting to learn cool new stuff and to get out of town for the day.

Dorothy Must Die: Review

Dorothy Must Die

Book Review Time!!!!! I love writing book reviews because books give me happiness in my life so whenever I finish a book, I get super excited to talk about it! Today I am writing about the latest book that I finished called Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige.

I found out about this book last summer. I was visiting Barnes & Noble aka. my favorite store in the entire universe and I saw that on a table they had excerpts of this book. I grabbed one because it’s free and I figured why not? I was sitting on my porch reading it and I was completely fascinated by the story. I was sad when the excerpt ended and I immediately added this book to my Goodreads list. I actually ended up buying this book when I went home with my boyfriend one weekend so it was sitting in near my desk and as soon as I finished Horns, I picked up the book.

I rated this book four stars on Goodreads. I absolutely loved the story! Our main character is Amy Gumm. She comes from a harsh life in the fact that her mother is addicted to medications and is unemployed. Amy often takes care of herself. She is sent home from school one day and a tornado whisks Amy away to Oz. She is shocked by the nature of Oz. It’s completely different from the original story. Dorothy is the ruler of Oz now and she is completely ruthless. There is a lot of violence in this book. I was definitely not expecting that from this novel. Amy is captured by Dorothy initially but escapes and ends up joining the Wicked Witches. She forms an alliance with the Wicked Witches and with their help they intend to take on Dorothy and help save Oz.

That’s the gist of the entire story. What I liked about this book is the descriptive details in the story. In each scene, I was picturing what it looked like in my head. The new Dorothy, how Oz looked destroyed, the glitter red disco balls & the constellation floor in Dorothy’s ballroom. It was told vividly where I could easily picture in my mind what Oz looked like. I also really enjoyed the characters. I like Amy a lot. I think she comes from nothing and really rises to take on Dorothy. I think her character is realistic too. Many of the choices she makes in the novel, I would definitely have done if I were in her situation.

I don’t want this review to go on forever and I certainly don’t want to spoil anything, but if you’re looking for something new to read, Dorothy Must Die should definitely be on your list. I loved the characters, the reinvented Oz and I can’t wait for the sequel! It’s called the Wicked Will Rise and it’s being released on March 31st, 2015. If you’re a fan of Oz, I think you will like this but even if you’re a newbie to the world of Oz-like myself, you will still find this book to be wildly entertaining.

The Simpsons Tapped Out

I am not usually an app person. I mean I have an iPhone, but I don’t really have a reason to use apps. However, I was browsing the app store and came across the Simpsons Tapped Out. I am a huge fan of the Simpsons! I always have been. I downloaded this app and I was surprised at how addicting it is!

When you first download the app, it shows Homer playing on his “myPad” when he is at work at the nuclear power plant. A nuclear detonation ensues and you have to rebuild Springfield any way you like. It’s basically like Farmville almost but Simpsons edition.

What I love about the app is all the constant updates so this app never gets really old. The new update that came out is all comic themed and it is very fun. Also, it connects to Facebook so I added a couple of my friends to the game. You can visit their Springfield towns and vandalize their buildings for friendship XP. I love vandalizing my boyfriend’s buildings in the game.

This is the perfect app for any Simpsons fan. It’s addicting and if you download the app, you should let me know so we can be friends! The Simpsons are easily one of the funniest animated cartoon shows on television and I will forever be a Simpsons fan. One day I will sit and do the ultimate binge-watching challenge of watching every single Simpsons episode in existence. For now, the app will have to do.

I See Fire

I am currently obsessed with the song “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran. I found out about it when the Hobbit: The Battle of the Three Armies came out this past December. I had it on a playlist on Spotify, but I never really listened to it until today. This song perfectly describes the Hobbit.

What I like about it too is the use of the violin and the guitar. The whole song has middle earth feel to it, and since I read The Hobbit, the lyrics really match up with the story. It’s a really sad song because it talks about the burning of Lake-Town by Smaug and how the city is destroyed and the lives lost. Even though it’s fictional, it gives me chills when I listen to it. I even risked being late to class today because I wanted to walk around campus until the song finished.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan like I am, you would definitely appreciate this song because it really is beautifully written.

My Life Lately: Week of February 15th 2015.

This semester has been so busy for me! I have been managing time with my friends, my boyfriend, the gym, club meetings, projects, homework, and studying and I am sometimes astounded at what is on my plate at once. This post is just a nice little wrap-up of my week since my last post.

Last weekend, I went shopping with my roommates which ended up being a nice weekend to just get out of town! I needed new workout shoes because mine was falling apart and I bought these awesome Nike blue and coral workout shoes. They have been fantastic and I have been working out often trying to break them in. I have discovered that waking up at 6:20 in the morning and going to the gym is actually very soothing. Once I get done at the gym and I get in a great workout, I just feel fantastic and that I can tackle my day. I have been doing this every Tuesday and Thursday since I have later classes on those days. It fits into my schedule and I love it!

This past Tuesday, I found out that Spider-Man is coming back to the Marvel universe!! To celebrate, I took a picture with the stuffed Spider-Man that is currently sitting on my desk. Unfortunately, I think Andrew Garfield is out of playing Spider-Man which actually saddens me because I liked him in the role.

The last thing that I wanted to mention was the Electric Forest music festival! It’s a music festival happening in Rothbury, Michigan in June! I bought my three-day ticket pass already which came to around $300. That is expensive, but it’s not just a concert ticket you’re paying for, it’s the memories that will come from that weekend. When my friend told me about this festival, I got really excited. It has an eccentric, mythical feel to it. I am super pumped for this music festival and I am so glad I have found some fun plans for this summer.

Stress

This week has been stressful for me. I had a fifteen-minute presentation to give, and I have been preparing for two very important tests that are happening on Monday. Yesterday, I ended up crying a lot. I was trying to go to bed and I just felt like I wasn’t doing enough or I wasn’t smart enough.

Anatomical Kinesiology and Exercise Physiology have been taking up a lot of my time. Anatomical Kinesiology is the study of how the body moves and how certain muscles move in different planes of motion. Exercise Physiology is all about studying the structure and functions of the body while it’s being put through exercise. I love my major! Exercise Science is where I belong. These classes are super interesting, but at the same time, they require a lot of my time.

I try and deal with stress by trying to find time for myself. I have been reading a lot this semester. Reading is really nice because it helps me get a good night’s sleep, but it also distracts me from my classes and presentations. I have also been trying to keep up with this blog. Writing a blog post always makes my day a little better. Sometimes the best way with dealing with stress is to talk to other people. I got off the phone with a friend of mine and just catching up with her completely distracted me from everything I had to get done today. I also studied with a friend of mine, and we started talking about baseball and how much we wanted to go to a game this summer. It’s the simple things in life that really make me calm.

My goals for this semester include: seeking out my friends for advice and giving myself positive encouragement. When I’m upset about something, I tend to keep it to myself even though I feel like I’m about to explode. Now, I am trying to seek out advice and vent to my friends to try and relieve the tension that I have. Another goal of mine is to give positive encouragement. Instead of beating myself up over one bad quiz score, I need to tell myself that I can do this. I am not going to let a simple letter grade define who I am.
