Personal Training: Update!

I haven’t been writing regular posts because I have been feeling… uninspired. I haven’t been on any great trips or read any super amazing books so it had been days since I felt energized enough to write a post. One great thing happened to me this week I wanted to share and it has to do with my personal training experience at the gym I exercise at. After doing an In-Body machine *which calculates your muscle & body fat* I gained a pound of muscle. How cool is that!? All the hard work I put into my sessions has literally left me feeling stronger.

I talked about why I decided to hire a personal trainer in that blog post so I won’t go through that here. For me, my goal is to put on more muscle mass because muscle is so important since it can deteriorate as we age if we don’t use it. I would like to decrease my body fat, but I’m not necessarily ready to be super strict with myself. For example, if I go out to a happy hour with friends, I will have one drink but try not to exceed two. My body fat went up .2 which I’m not too concerned with. I carry about 53 lbs. of body fat which you might think is a lot, but not really. I love my curves! I don’t want to be skinny because I like having some body fat on my frame. I would like to see this number decrease, but it’s not my main concern.

I can tell I’m getting stronger based on how I complete the workouts. Before this, I couldn’t do a push-up on my toes. Now, I can do multiple push-ups in a row on my toes and go farther down into the push-up. I have upped my weight in dumbbells doing 20 lbs. for a shoulder press. Also my stamina! I feel I have more energy to go along with my day which means I’m decreasing the amount of coffee I drink and increasing my water intake.

Overall if you have been exercising and haven’t been seeing results, hire a coach or personal trainer. Getting toned is tough to do on your own, so allow someone to help assist you in getting the results you need.

Parks & Recreation is Amazing

[Image is a promotional poster for Parks & Recreation. It shows all the characters in the background with Ron and Leslie front in center]

I find The Office both the British and American versions to be overrated. I know a couple of you reading this are already thinking, “How could you say that?!?!”. I have seen both versions and sure, there are some funny episodes, but I wasn’t a big fan like other people I know. When me and the boyfriend were debating on what to watch, he suggested Parks and Recreation. I told him because I disliked The Office, I didn’t think this show was for me. He persuaded me into watching the first season and I was hooked. I cannot believe I missed out on this show when it originally aired, but I finished season #7 a couple days ago and I wanted to sum up why I love this show so much.

Parks & Rec is filmed similarly to The Office but instead takes place in Pawnee, Indiana in the Parks & Recreation department of the local government. Leslie Knope, (played wonderfully by Amy Poehler) is an over-achiever who is passionate about having clean parks for her town. In the first season, she meets Ann Perkins (played by Rashida Jones) and they work with the local government to fill this big hole outside of Ann’s house. Ann’s fiance Andy Dwyer (played by Chris Pratt) fell into the hole and was seriously injured. This show tells their stories and how they get into a bunch of shenanigans.

What’s so endearing about the show is all the characters. Leslie is a feminist who believes women belong in the government. Ann Perkins makes Leslie more level-headed which helps her succeed. Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman) is a realist who believes the government shouldn’t be so involved in his affairs. Also, he enjoys breakfast food, bourbon, and living outdoors. Tom Haverford (played by Aziz Ansari) is a sophisticated wannabe socialite who helps Leslie live a little. Andy Dwyer is the lovable goof who’s kind of an idiot. April Ludgate is the person who you really identify with. She hates everyone initially but ends up coming around. Donna (played by Retta) is confident and emphasizes that you “treat yo self.” All of these characters help create the love for the show.

I can’t talk about Parks and Rec without including Leslie & Ben’s relationship. Ben Wyatt (played by Adam Scott) is Leslie’s husband and her other half. He’s introduced in season #2 and I don’t think I have ever “shipped” an on-screen couple more. He allows Leslie to achieve her dreams while also being successful in his own field. As an added bonus, Ben is a real geek. He comes up with his own board game series, makes a great calzone, and is from Minnesota. They are so perfect together.

I could write way more about how I love Parks & Rec, but my post has to end sometime. Me and the boyfriend have different TV tastes which comes in handy when he introduces me to a show I wouldn’t have normally watched. With that said, leave me a comment about why you adore Parks & Recreation.

Financial Tidbits I learned

We talk about physical and mental health quite frequently in society, but what about financial health? Financial health describes what your financial state is. This includes emergency savings, and retirement along with how much disposable income you have. Disposable income is important because to fuel the economy we need to purchase stuff. I wanted to share a couple things I’m doing to help me out financially.

[Image is two women holding wands and smiling at the camera. At the bottom of the photo it says "Planet Comicon"]
Attend another convention? Yes, please 🙂

Creating a Travel Savings Account

My financial adviser suggested doing this to help pay for travel without digging into my “emergency savings.” Plus if I know my money is directly going to fund my next trip, it gets me more excited to stay in if I know I could fly somewhere new in the next couple of months. I’m using Ally and I opened a high-yielding savings account to help accrue more interest. I’m looking forward to seeing this account grow and which trips I can personally fund out of this account.

Make all minimum payments on credit card debt

Before, I was throwing as much money as I possibly could pay my credit card debt which led to me draining my checking account too easily. Instead, I will be putting 15-20 dollars from each paycheck to my credit card. I narrowed down my credit card debt to around $100 which means I’m so close to paying it off.

Put anywhere between 10 – 20% in the emergency savings

I tried putting 20% of my paychecks in savings and find that’s not working with all of my bills I have to pay + having some discretionary funds to buy comics/books, go shopping, or go out to eat. I’m playing around with how much to put in my savings so that I still have some leftover fun money as well.

Create a Budget

I used Microsoft Excel to lay out all my bills for each month. This keeps me organized and helped me cut some expenses I didn’t need. For example, I dropped off some of the virtual coaching I had been doing so this left me with an extra $80 a month. I also forgot about some of the extra random bills like car tabs once a year and my Xbox Live yearly subscription. This budget has helped me immensely into becoming organized with my paychecks.

I’m always looking for ways to save money and be financially smarter. So leave a comment below if you have any other tips/tricks with money.

Geeky Girl Tag

[Image is a selfie of a woman smiling. At the bottom in white font it reads "The Geeky Girl Tag Bizarre Brunette"]

Participating in blog tags is perfect if you don’t know what to write about. I stumbled upon this blog tag by reading A Geeky Gal and decided to complete this tag because why not? I do plan on writing some original content for this blog in the next couple of days so stay tuned for that. Otherwise, here are my answers to this blog tag:

What is your must-have tech gadget

I recently switched from an iPhone 5S to a Samsung Android and I am already impressed by the quality of the camera. My Android keeps my favorite apps organized and I also have my workouts app installed so my personal trainer can send me my three workouts a week. I wouldn’t be able to exercise without my Samsung phone.

Who is your favorite Doctor?

I have always said Nine in the past, but I do enjoy Eleven for very different reasons. A bucket list item of mine is to watch some of the older Doctor Who episodes starring Tom Baker.

If You Could Have Dinner With Any Fictional Character, Who Would It Be?

I couldn’t think of an answer so I asked the boyfriend and he said he would like to have dinner with Bruce Wayne. I would be down for that.

What is Your Gaming System of Choice?

Since 2007, I’m an Xbox 360 kind of girl. I did pick up my PS4 on Black Friday and I’m working through Uncharted now. I prefer consoles over PCs, that much I’m sure of.

If You Had a Superpower What Would It Be?

  • Stopping Time so I could take a nap and never be tired.
  • Be a trained martial artist like Black Canary. I know it’s not *technically* a superpower, but Black Canary is one of the best heroines in DC Comics. She rules.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

Star Wars for sure. I have never been a huge Trekkie.

100% Video Games; I don’t Have Time For That

Last night I was playing through Uncharted Drake’s Fortune where I was exploring on one level to figure out how to climb this tower. While doing so, I uncovered one relic. There are 60 relics to find in this first game and I have found maybe 6? Looking back at my history in gaming, I have always been that gamer who would collect as many achievements or trophies as I possibly could before I moved on to the next game. Sometimes if I still had achievements left in a game to collect, I wouldn’t move on to the next game until I collected my achievements. Now, as I’m collecting these relics, I realize I just don’t have time to 100% games.

This stems from having many different video games to play! I still have the second & third Uncharted games to play through. I also haven’t beaten Sexy Brutale or Last of Us. I’m also planning on pre-ordering the PS4 Spiderman game because it looks stunning. I find the more time I spend trying to 100% complete a game, I miss out on other video games being released.

Trying to 100% a game is time-consuming. When I was playing through Lego Marvel Superheroes, it took me four hours to go around and unlock characters, collect gold bricks, and play through all the bonus levels. 4 hours!! on a Saturday just to unlock achievements. Normally, I like to play video games for at least two hours in one sitting, but I realize I could have been cleaning my apartment or out at a brewery with a friend.

In high school or even winter breaks home from college, I had the time to sit down and achievement hunt in a game. With a full-time job, social life and exercise eating into my free time, I want to be able to experience as many games as possible, so I’m okay with not getting all the achievements I want to get if it means I can move on to the next game.

Are there any other gamers out there who have struggled with this?

Would you get The Cure?

[Image is a green cover. It shows a skeleton with a sythe stabbing through it. The cover says "The PostMortal by Drew Magary"]

One of the more recent books I read, The Postmortal by Drew Magary, had an interesting premise that made me think. In the book, there was a “cure” for aging discovered and almost everyone in this book received “The Cure”. They would stay the same age and their organs wouldn’t deteriorate. The planet changes as people are living way longer than they used to. The question is, if the cure existed where you wouldn’t age any longer, would you take it?

I don’t think I would want to receive “The Cure” for aging. I try and take care of my body so that as I age I’m able to use it for longer. In the book, the government eventually goes to extreme measures by sanctioning the killing of elderly people. There’s also a lot more divorce because people enter into what’s called a cycle marriage. Cycle marriages are contracts where each person says they want to be together for 40 years and then divorce to find someone else to marry. I would like to think the person I end up with will be by my side forever, not just as a placement holder.

For the record, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the book for a few reasons. The main character was annoying and the book moved too slowly for me. I will say I did like some of the themes the book presented as to whether or not we deserve the right to live forever. I look at Wolverine as another good example of this. He has lived through decades, but he isn’t happy because he has seen everyone he cares about perish while he has to suffer through his life. That’s not a life worth living.

Even though I didn’t like this book, it allowed me to be able to read something that I normally wouldn’t have. Let me know in the comments whether you would receive the cure for aging if it ever became available.

Mystery Blogger Award

[Image is a blue galaxy like background. The image says "Mystery Blogger Award"]

I was in Milwaukee, WI this past weekend unwinding with the boyfriend’s side of the family when my phone buzzed saying I was tagged in a Facebook post. Sure enough, Wintendo64  tagged me in the mystery blogger award.

WHAT IS MYSTERY BLOGGER AWARD?

Straight from the creator: “Mystery Blogger Award” is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging, and they do it with so much love and passion.

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog. Thanks, Wintendo64 for nominating me! Her cosplays are amazing.
  • Display the award logo on your blog.
  • Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
  • List the rules.
  • Tell your readers three things about yourself.
  • Answer five questions from the nominator.
  • Ask your nominees any five questions of your choice, including one weird or funny question.
  • Nominate from 10 to 20 bloggers.
  • Notify the bloggers by leaving a comment on their blog.
  • Share the link to your best post.

My Three Things:

  1. I didn’t start reading comics until after seeing The Avengers in 2012. It sparked something within me that led me to read comics. After buying Justice League and Green Arrow, I was led to Image Comics which produces my favorite indie comics. I definitely swing DC > Marvel, but I’m slowly becoming more immersed in Marvel comics as well.
  2. I have always wanted to build my own computer. Living in a one-bedroom apartment, I have no room for a desk with a computer. When I upgrade to a two-bedroom apartment, I want the second bedroom to be a library/work room with a desk. That’s where I want my computer to go.
  3. Chicago is one of my favorite places to visit.

Questions

What’s a fictional food you have always wanted to try?

Butterbeer sounds like it would be so good.

Dream Cosplay

I have always wanted to cosplay Elektra or Catwoman.

What is your LEAST favorite video game/book/movie?

I will pick one from each category. My least favorite video game would be Call of Duty because they release a game each year with nothing really new in it. My least favorite book would be a toss-up between Emma by Jane Austin and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Emma is a horrible person who’s extremely judgmental and Wuthering Heights is way too depressing of a book to read. Finally, one of my least favorite movies would be Knowing which stars Nicolas Cage… it was really bad.

If you got a ticket to any fictional event, where would you go?

The first competition that I thought of was the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter. I would want to watch, not actually participate.

What new game/book/movie are you looking forward to being released?

Avengers Infinity War is by far what I’m looking forward to the most!

I’m going to break the rules for this blog tag and say anyone who reads this post and wants to do the tag is nominated. If you do decide to complete this tag, here are my questions:

  1. What is your all-time favorite OTP?
  2. What would be your dream career?
  3. The worst vacation you have ever been on?
  4. What’s one popular movie / TV Show/book/comic that everyone loves, but you absolutely hate?
  5. Night Owl or Early Riser?

I have been trying to think about what my “best blog post was”. To be honest, I love everything that I write for BizarreBrunette. All my readers inspire me to keep blogging about what I’m passionate about.

April 2018 Goals!

Happy Easter! Easter has never been a big holiday in my family, so me and the boyfriend decided to drive to Milwaukee to spend this holiday with his family. It’s nice to get out of my regular routine every now and then. Spring is right around the corner hopefully, though when I look outside I still see brown grass with dirty snow piles everywhere. Let’s recap the month of March:

Increase my Roth IRA deposit from $50 to $100 FAIL *ish*

Last month I made an appointment to meet with a financial adviser from Thrivent about my finances and spending. I learned a lot about how to save for my future. Instead of bumping my Roth IRA, I’m more focused on having more money in my emergency savings. My adviser calculated I was $1000 short of what I should have in that account… yikes. I chose to keep my Roth IRA at $50 a month until I reach my savings goal. If you have never made an appointment to meet with a financial adviser, I highly recommend it.

Move at least $100 from each paycheck to Savings PASS

I also moved my federal refund from my taxes into my savings as well. Saving money has never been difficult for me.

Watch Season #2 of Jessica Jones PASS

I even wrote my review under my Bizarre Brunette Binges section, check it out if you haven’t already: Jessica Jones Review

Catch up on my Comics Pile PASS

I finished Moonstruck Issues #3 – #5. I still have Saga and Paper Girls to read, but I did read a lot more comics this month.

Finish Lego Marvel Superheroes 100% PASS

I unlocked all the achievements besides the 100% achievement. I know what you’re thinking, technically I didn’t meet my goal, right? I realize there are many video games out there for me to play, there’s not enough time to 100% every single game. I collected all the achievements I wanted to, but now I’m playing Uncharted Drake’s Fortune.

My goals for the month of April:

Plan out my Boston Trip with family.

In May, me and my family are driving out to Boston! I’m pumped about it because I love road trips and I haven’t been to the East Coast before. We haven’t really planned a whole lot of it yet.

Create a Travel Savings account

This has been on my mind for a while, but I want to create a new savings account specifically for travel. I don’t want to dip into my emergency savings to pay for something extra. I’m thinking of going to Ally because they have higher-yielding savings accounts versus other typical banks.

Finish Uncharted Drake’s Fortune & Start Uncharted #2 Among Thieves

A couple months ago I bought the three games remastered on one disc. When I bought my PS4 back in November, I knew I wanted to play The Last of Us & Uncharted because they were huge titles on the play station.

[Image is a close up picture of a pint of beer]

Visit One Brewery I Have Never Been To Before

I don’t drink often, but if I do it’s usually a beer at a brewery. Breweries are chill places to have a pint and a genuine conversation with friends. Minneapolis / St. Paul has way too many breweries to count, but I want to visit one I haven’t been to before.

Jessica Jones

[Image shows a woman menacingly looking in front. There are gym lockers in the background with grafitti that says "Fight Like a Woman" There's a man unconscious behind her. The image reads - Marvel Jessica Jones A Netflix Original Series. Netflix | March 8th]

One of the goals I set for March was to watch season #2 of Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones is my favorite “Defender” introduced thus far on Marvel’s Netflix series. The first season did a fantastic job wrestling with several difficult topics including PTSD stemming from sexual assault. Season #2 is phenomenal although, not all fans agree with me. I have heard the criticisms regarding this season, but I am going to offer my opinion as to why I enjoyed this season as much as Kilgrave’s season.

This season focuses heavily on Jessica’s past. Season #1 ignored how she got her powers instead focusing on how Kilgrave manipulated her. The beginning of season #2 shows Jessica drinking heavily, insulting Malcolm, and trying to survive in NYC. She is approached by a man in a yellow coat claiming to have “powers” who believes someone is trying to kill him. Jessica unsurprisingly blows him off. When he dies in a terrible accident, Jessica starts to investigate and discovers a connection with IGH. IGH should be familiar as it was hinted at with Officer Simpson at the end of season #1.

Besides Jessica’s powers, we really see her relationship with Trish becoming more strained along with why Jessica named her PI business Alias Investigations. Additionally, Jessica meets her mother who apparently didn’t die in the car accident. Her mother gained powers through illegal experiments performed at IGH. Unfortunately for Jessica’s mother, she cannot control the people she kills and the anger she exhibits. Ultimately, Trish kills her in the last episode due to all of the crimes she committed.

One of the biggest criticisms of this show is there really isn’t a “big bad villain”. Kilgrave led season #1 while season #2 centers around Jessica’s mother. Karl Malus could be considered a villain, but his intentions are good. However, I want to argue the reason why season #2 is as great as season #1 is because of character development. Malcolm has a bigger role this season besides just being a drug addict controlled by Kilgrave. He takes charge of his future and eventually sticks up for himself telling Jessica he’s done being mistreated by her. He has a heart and even though Trish completely uses him, he still wants to make sure she’s okay.

One last thing I want to mention is I adore Jessica’s relationship with Oscar and his son Vido. Especially the end scene where Jessica has dinner with the two of them and talks about her day. She isn’t in a good place mentally so instead of drinking her sorrows like her usual, she spends time with them.

Season #2 of Jessica Jones has a different tone from season #1, but I loved it.

Halt the Daleks in Doctor Who Time of the Daleks

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of driving to my uncle’s house for a classic tabletop gaming day. Most of the time we played Star Wars X-Wing from Fantasy Flight Games, but after dinner, my uncle pulled out his copy of Doctor Who Time of the Daleks from his gaming shelf. I didn’t know a Doctor Who-themed board game existed and my uncle knows I’m a fan of the show. My group only got to play it for 10 – 15 minutes, but I was surprised by how difficult it was and how I was looking forward to playing it in the future.

[Image features a game card. The game card shows several spots for dice. Below the dice pool, it shows Clara and The Doctor in the TARDIS. There's a card off to the left where it says "Eleventh Doctor" along with Sonic Screwdriver tokens]

To start the game, each player picks the First Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, or Twelfth Doctor. I automatically called playing the Eleventh Doctor because Matt Smith has a special place in my heart with his fish sticks & custard along with his bow tie. My uncle read the rules to help us understand the game. Our ultimate goal is to prevent the Dalek ship from reaching Gallifrey before we do. In order to gain companions, we can visit earth past, earth present, or earth future marked on the board. As our Doctors visit Earth along different timelines, we have to overcome dilemmas. This is where the game is difficult.

Each dilemma piece lists a series of colors along with symbols. This correlates to the dice associated with your doctor. Your Doctor & your companions each contribute dice to the overall dice pool. These dice are used to overcome dilemmas by rolling the correct color die with the correct symbol. If you pass the roll by getting all the symbols & colors needed, there’s a reward which could be moving the Dalek ship backward. However, if you fail… bad things happen like moving the Dalek ship forward.

As the Daleks move, they can set off time anomalies which can punish all the players. In the ten minutes we played the game, each of us failed a dilemma so the Dalek ship set off two-time anomalies and moved the Dalek ship five spaces beyond our Tardis pieces. The difficulty doesn’t turn me away from the game, it makes me determined to keep playing.

In the ten minutes, I played the game, there was a lot I liked. I enjoyed the characters they picked such as Eleven along with him being connected with Amy Pond. I like the difficulty, but I can see where other gamers might be turned away. I’m waiting for the expansion where they include the Ninth doctor.

Overall, if you consider yourself to be a Doctor Who fan, this is the board game for you. I think it works well with more than two players, but you could play it with your best friend or partner. I’m looking forward to playing this game for a full game on our next game night.
