Horns by Joe Hill

CW: Horns has mentioned sexual assault and violence against women.

The feeling when you finish a book is so satisfying. I finished Horns last week and I got sidetracked but now I have time to actually write a full review on this book. I will be talking about spoilers so if you’re not interested in spoilers and want to read this book, stop reading this post right now!

I became interested in reading this book when I heard about the Daniel Radcliffe movie version coming out during Halloween. I wanted to see it in the theater, but my small town didn’t have it. I looked into this book and added it to my Goodreads list. I found out later that the writer of this book, Joe Hill, is the biological son of Stephen King. That made me more interested in reading it.

This book is about Ig Perrish. It’s a year after the rape and murder of his beloved girlfriend Merrin Williams. He wakes up the morning after her anniversary and discovers he has devil horns protruding from his skull. After discovering this, he realizes he can hear people’s deepest and darkest secrets. An example of this is when Ig visits his doctor regarding the horns, his doctor asks Ig if he should sleep with his daughter’s seventeen-year-old best friend. Ig realizes the amazing gifts his horns bring and he decides to track down who really killed Merrin.

What is so fascinating about this book, is that it didn’t play out like I thought it was going to. I thought the killer would be revealed in the last couple of pages. Instead, the killer is revealed very early on. In a section of the book, we find out more about the killer and how he displayed signs of narcissism and psychopathic tendencies.

This book is a fast read. Usually, I read books right before I go to bed, but this book I was taking with me everywhere and whenever I had any sort of free time, I would read this book because I wanted to know what happens! I felt the writing itself was intelligent and I really liked Ig Perrish as a character.

I would highly recommend this book and I think on Goodreads I gave it three stars! It was really enjoyable but I wouldn’t rank it one of my all-time favorite books. If you’re looking for a mystery with a fantasy aspect to it, this is the perfect book for you!

Reading Manga for the First Time

Attack on Titan

Happy Friday everyone! This weekend I am planning on staying in and reading, studying, and working out! It’s nice having relaxing weekends to lay around the house and read and write. Currently, I’m reading Horns by Joe Hill but I decided to start this manga that I purchased.

Manga is fascinating in the fact that you read it from right to left. Each of the panels on each page is read from right to left as well. It took some getting used to, but eventually, I was able to pick up on the pattern.

This manga I was introduced to it by a high school friend of mine. Attack on Titan is about a city that lives in protection by a 50-meter-tall wall of concrete. This wall surrounds the entire city and protects the citizens from creatures called Titans. Titans are big giants that remind me of human giants with their skin peeled off. On the cover that I posted above, a Titan is that red-face muscle creature. Our main characters are Mikasa and Eren who live in the city.

I haven’t made it far in the manga yet but I think it’s fascinating. It’s kind of like the Japanese version of the Walking Dead. I have always been interested in Manga but I have never felt compelled to purchase it until last weekend in Milwaukee. There was this really cool comic book store and on the left-hand side, they had huge long shelves with Manga on them. That’s where I found Attack on Titan.

I hope to finish this soon and if I really do enjoy it, I might pick up the second book in the series. I might blog about a full review of what I think so stay tuned for that!

My Trip to Milwaukee

This weekend was super exciting because I ended up going home with my boyfriend to meet his parents for the first time and explore a brand new city! Meeting the parents always makes me nervous. It ended up being a blast and his parents were very nice and really accepted me for the weekend that I spent at his house. Part of that weekend included seeing Milwaukee for the first time.

I have never been this far into Wisconsin before. I never really had a reason to. My boyfriend lives about a half-hour from the city and so we decided to make a day trip. The first stop we made was at the Harley Davidson motorcycle museum. This museum was very interesting and really cool! The first part of the museum shows some of the earliest motorcycles known to exist. It shows gradually how the Harley brand and the motorcycles have changed throughout the decades. The second part of the museum shows motorcycles in pop culture, racing motorcycles, and the newest motorcycles coming out in 2015. My favorite part of the exhibit was the Captain America motorcycle! In Captain America: First Avenger, Steve Rogers is riding on this retro military motorcycle. They had the motorcycle at this museum. I thought it was amazing to look at. I also loved the other type of motorcycles that were donated to the museum. This included a rhinestone motorcycle with red, white, and blue rhinestones.

If you’re ever in the Milwaukee area, I highly recommend this museum because the motorcycles were very interesting! After the motorcycle museum, we decided to go to the Milwaukee art museum! It’s right along Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, the museum was between exhibits so there wasn’t all that much to look at but there was this really cool glass sculpture in the museum that was stunning.  We also did a little shopping which included me buying books and a new Spider-Man mug.

I love exploring new areas and Milwaukee is a really cool city. I wish I was 21 though so I could have checked out a couple of the bars in the city that also leaves room for another trip to Milwaukee!

Secret Santa Gifts, Going Back to School and New Haircut!

My winter break is officially over. I am glad to start classes and get back to a normal routine after having a lot of downtime. Today I met up with some friends and we gave our secret Santa presents. For my secret Santa, I got her a Batman-related present which included a t-shirt, a necklace, and Batman socks. She loved it! I received a Tardis journal. It has the Tardis on the front and “Bad Wolf” written on the Tardis. If you watch Doctor Who, you get the reference. Overall my friends definitely know enough about me to get me an awesome present!

I have also been busy because I have been preparing to go back to Winona. I had to get my car’s oil changed, get a haircut, pack, return my library books and finish most of them, make a grocery list and wash clothes. All of that is out of the way and I am sitting in my room writing this post. I love having a car on campus! It’s more freedom on where I can go in Winona. There is this awesome coffee shop called Acoustic Cafe that has live music. I can go there more often now because I have a car!

Finally, I got a haircut! This is always weird to me because I have always had my hair long. I got it cut short because I really wanted a change and it’s a lot easier to take care of too.

Fandom Friday: 5 New Years Fandom Resolutions

Fandom Resolutions. This includes movies, TV shows, book series, comic books anything fandom-related that I want to do this year. So here goes my list! 🙂

1. Finish all the New Doctor and Old Doctor Who Episodes and read my Who-Verse book!

Doctor Who Stuff

(above picture took at CONvergence 2014)

I started becoming a Whovian in May of 2014. I was completely entranced in everything Doctor Who. I am still on Tennants run because it takes me forever to get through TV shows. I started watching in May and my boyfriend started watching it in November and he’s done already while I am definitely not. I want to finally get through all the Doctor Who episodes on Netflix. After all the new episodes, I’m going to start reading my Who-Verse book I got from the Science Museum.

2. Reading!

I won’t talk about this too much because it is on my New Years’ resolution list too

3. Go to Minneapolis Comic-Con!

I just found out that Karl Urban is going to be there. I LOVE HIM! He was in a canceled TV Show called Almost Human that’s actually awesome. I was a huge fan of the show. I also loved him in Dredd and Lord of the Rings. I pretty much will see anything that he is in. It costs $225 dollars to get the VIP experience with him and get to meet him and take a picture of him! I really want to do it but it’s SUPER expensive. I at least want to go to Minneapolis Comic-Con

4. Read LOTR with the Books on Tape.

I have tried to read the Lord of the Rings books with no success. I was able to read the Hobbit and I felt accomplished finally finishing it. I am going to try to read Lord of the Rings but follow along with the books on tape. That will make getting through the books a lot easier.

Goals for the New Year! :)

2014 was definitely a fun year to remember. Usually, I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but I have been thinking of some goals that I want to accomplish next year.

1. Add Yoga to my workouts.

Yesterday, I went to a Hot Yoga group fitness class. It’s essentially yoga but the heat is turned up in the room. I walked out of that class feeling stronger. Yoga strengthens the muscles you didn’t know you had. It’s also very relaxing. I do use yoga as a stress reliever. I want to make sure I do Yoga at least once a week next year, but if I do it more often than that, that’s fine too!

2. Read more!

I have set a reading goal of 25 books to read in 2015. Goodreads is helping me keep track. Reading is important to me because it helps me fall asleep. I try to read every night usually just a chapter or two. I also love reading because I really get entranced in a story. The last book I finished, The Magician’s Nephew of the Chronicles of Narnia, had me entranced in the world of Narnia. I always imagine what the characters look like in my head or what Narnia looks like. It allows me to be creative and let my imagination run wild. I have also been getting into comic books and graphic novels. I love the stories and the images and how much effort went into making each picture in the comics. I plan on reading a lot more next semester!

3. Check out more books at the library!

This goal goes along with my previous goal of reading more. I want to check out more books at the library. This lets me save money, but I also find the most random cool books in the library. Last summer, I read a random book about Darth Maul and it was super interesting!

4. Run a 5K

I have never been a really good runner. I have been working on increasing my speed and my distance. I think it would be really cool to run a 5K. A 5K is around 3.2 miles. This sounds like a long-distance but I think that would be really rewarding for me.

That’s really all the goals I have at the moment. My main goal is to have a lot of fun and have new experiences. I want to meet new people but improve upon the friendships I already have. Here is to a great and fantastic year. 2015 is officially here.

Hot Comics & Collectibles

I feel grateful that I have a sibling. My brother is three years older than I am and since going off to school, my and my brother hang out whenever I come home. Today my brother and I went to the local comic book store by my house. Recently, I have been reading more comic books and graphic novels. It’s become a new interest of mine.

Hot Comics & Collectibles is fifteen minutes from my house. I’m pretty sure I have been there before because I felt a feeling of deja vu when I entered the store. It’s a pretty cool place. As soon as you walk in, there are boxes and boxes of individual issues of comics. That’s where I first looked. I love individual issues of comics because it gives me a feel of what I will like and won’t like. Each issue is around three dollars. If I don’t like a certain series or character, I didn’t really waste that much money instead of buying a graphic novel for fifteen-twenty bucks and not liking it. They also had some really cool action figures, Magic the Gathering cards, Doctor Who memorabilia, and books. I ended up purchasing comics that revolve around Elektra, Fantastic Four, Hawk & Dove, and the Huntress. I would definitely go back there again! It was a cool store, and I could easily spend hours going through each of the back issues of each superhero.

These are some of the pictures I took. There was a section in the store completely devoted to the Hulk. I really wanted to find those Hulk string lights because I thought they were awesome but I couldn’t find them. I found this book about speaking Klingon and that made me think of the Big Bang Theory and the episode where Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard play Klingon Boggle. The action figures that I saw were amazing. The Thing action figure cost around $650 but it’s accurate and actually pretty big.

I would definitely come back here again but right now I have plenty to read in between the books I have on my reading list (see my other blog post) and these graphic novels, I probably won’t be back for a while. I have two weeks left of winter break so it’s time to get reading!

Best Movie of 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy

So 2014 is coming to a wrap pretty soon and who knew that one of my favorite movies of the year starred a tree and a talking raccoon? Guardians of the Galaxy came out in August and I went with a friend to go see it. I was blown away by how good this movie actually was.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, and Karen Gillan. The main character is Peter Quill/Star-Lord played by Chris Pratt. He goes to other planets and collects valuable items and sells them for money. He is a petty thief. He finds this orb on one of these collecting missions and it turns out to be pretty valuable. Peter Quill comes to encounter Rocket the Racoon and his partner Groot, Gamora, a female assassin, and Drax the Destroyer. Together they need to protect this orb from other parties seeking it for the wrong reasons. That’s really all I want to say about this movie because I don’t want to give anything away. I recommend watching this movie because it reminds me of our generation’s The Empire Strikes Back.

My two favorite characters are definitely Groot and Gamora. Groot only says three lines in the entire movie He’s a huge tree and he uses his branches to help save the entire gang throughout the movie. I like Gamora because she doesn’t need anyone to help save her. She is fine on her own but yet she is a really important team player.

I love the soundtrack! I have the playlist and I listen to it when I work out or even when I’m studying at school. My favorite song from the soundtrack has got to be Go All the Way by The Raspberries. The music is just so fun and I can be in a horrible mood and listen to this soundtrack and it makes me feel a little better.

This is definitely my favorite movie of 2014. It has an excellent cast, a fun soundtrack, and a great story. Plus how can you resist a small, baby-dancing Groot?

Winter is Beautiful

Winter can be a beautiful season. I have noticed that the older I become, the more I enjoy winter. I think the snow can be beautiful. It turns my neighborhood and my backyard into a winter wonderland. Of course, winter does have its downsides such as the cold, ice everywhere, and the absence of the sun on most days. I don’t think I could ever live in an area without snow or without winter. The perfect winter day is when it’s lightly snowing, the temperature is around 20-30 degrees, it’s bright outside not a dull gray and there is no ice on the ground to trip over.

I have been taking more pictures recently because I haven’t been using my camera as much as I should. I feel like these pictures capture what I really enjoy about the winter and the holiday season.

Five Books on my Reading List

I am a huge reader. I have always been reading ever since I was young. Since winter break has started, I have been reading more because I have the time too! Here are the five books on my reading list that I hope I can read before the break is over

1. The Magician’s Nephew and the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis

I had the boxed set of all 7 books when my dad first bought it for me over 10 years ago! I have always wanted to read these books and I actually started the Magician’s Nephew before I went back to school. I kind of forget I even started reading the series but once I came home for break I realized I had to read these books.

2. It by Stephen King

It

I picked this up at my school’s library because I felt like I had nothing to read. I have always wanted to read this book because I am a fan of Stephen King’s novels. The length of this book is going to be the main reason why I won’t be able to finish it over break, but I will definitely make sure that I finish it by next year for sure.

3. Misery by Stephen King

Misery

This is my last Stephen King book on this list I promise! My mom told me she had this book and she gave it to me to read it. I have always watched the movie with Kathy Bates and she is so scary. If I don’t get a chance to finish it over break, I will bring it back with me to school and read it. Stephen King really knows his horror genre.

4. The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien

Fellowship

I have always wanted to read Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books. I tried last summer and it was hard for me to get past all of The Hobbit histories in the beginning so I stopped. I became a Lord of the Rings fan recently as the first time I watched the film was in the summer of 2012. I loved the movies and the story and the characters and that really has inspired me to go back and read these books at least once. I finished The Hobbit this semester and I can’t wait for the movie.

5. Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Clockwork Orange

I watched this film in my Human Nature, Politics, and Violence class my freshman year of college. This film was violent. It turned me off at first. However, at the convention I usually go to, their theme this year is Dystopian Novels. Of course, I want to read all the dystopian novels I can get my hands on to prepare. This novel is a dystopian novel so I definitely want to read it. I don’t currently own this book but I will probably rent it from the library because I don’t really have an interest in owning a book.

So what’s on your reading list? I know I am going to have to get busy reading if I am going to finish or start some of these books. I can’t wait!
