Overcooked – A Cooking Co-Op Game

[Image is a game cover called Overcooked.]

I finished playing Overcooked back in April but ended up writing about other topics. I felt it was time to carve time to talk about Overcooked and how adorable this game is. I love any game that I can play with the boyfriend.

Overcooked tells the story of the Onion Kingdom that’s currently controlled by an evil entity. To defeat him, you have to feed him on time before he gets hangry. While playing through the levels, new recipes are learned and there are various characters to unlock as well.

As I played through Overcooked, it kept reminding me of Diner Dash. Diner Dash was more focused on running a restaurant while Overcooked is about cooking recipes with some added challenges from the levels. In one level, me and the boyfriend struggled because the floor was so icy. Our characters kept slipping on the ice and falling into the river. oops.

Overcooked is such a fun, challenging and short game to play. Overcooked is available on Xbox One, PS4 and on the Switch. For all the Xbox players, achievements are easy to earn in this game and everyone needs a boost in their gamer score.

Bizarre Brunette’s Convention Survival Guide

I remember attending my first con in the summer of 2013 and feeling that I belong there. CONvergence holds a special place in my heart for introducing me to conventions. While I love attending conventions, they can also be exhausting. CONvergence is a four-day convention, but even three-day conventions are tiring. I wanted to come up with a list of tips on having a good time and taking care of yourself along the way.

[Photo of two people. One is in a skirt and a crop top, the other in baggy brown slacks with a floppy brown hat. The characters are Robin on the left and the Scarecrow

Drink Water

Being dehydrated is the worst feeling. I know when I’m dehydrated because I get these horrible headaches. I find it most helpful to bring a backpack with a holder for a water bottle.

Have a Backpack

The first year I went to a con, I only brought my purse. This was a rookie mistake because I bought stuff and had nowhere to put it. I could run out to my friend’s car to drop stuff off, but that’s just a hassle. I usually bring a string backpack because it’s lightweight, but holds all my gear.

Protein Bars/Protein Snacks

Snacking is absolutely necessary to have the energy to last all day and possibly all night. I find that if I eat more protein, it keeps me more full. I always pack cashews or protein bars for every con.

Don’t Spend Your Money Right Away

My rule when spending money at a convention is to walk around and see all the booths and artists. In the back of my mind, I’ll keep track of things that I may want to purchase later. Nothing is worse than seeing something you want to buy and having no money because you spent it all already. Additionally, I’d also recommend coming up with a budget. I like to pull out cash and after it’s gone, then that’s it.

Visiting Artists Alley

I love walking through the art area of a convention. I prioritize spending my money at the artist’s table or purchase comics written by someone based in Minnesota. I find that when I spend money this way, it’s more meaningful since I had an actual conversation with that creator over their art and/or comics.

Doctor Who Convention May 2015.

Take Lots of Pictures

I am so glad I took pictures from my prior conventions because sometimes I take a day and browse through them all. There is so much to see at a convention and pictures are saved memories. Bring your phone fully charged or a digital camera.

Conventions are one of my favorite events to attend in the geek community. I feel so at home at a convention and I’m already counting down the days till my con next week. My goal is to make it to either C2E2 or Planet City Comic Con in Kansas City.

Road Trip / Back to Blogging

Today marks the morning after getting home from my epic U.S. road trip. For the past two weeks, I have been taking my new car around the U.S. on a long road trip. This road trip meant a lot to me because I made new memories and saw a new part of the U.S. Chattanooga, TN was one of my favorite cities I visited and I highly recommend traveling there this summer. The idea to take this road trip came to me because I wanted to go somewhere as a reward for graduating from college. I could have gone overseas, but my philosophy is there is so much to see in the country I was born in.

I’m happy to announce my return to blogging with some book reviews, comic reviews even some gaming-themed articles hopefully. I have a new goal with my blog to write when I want so blogging doesn’t become a chore. I wanted to leave a couple pictures of my trip, but if you’re looking for more definitely follow my Instagram account: Bizarrebrunette0117.

Selling My 360; Embracing the One

My gaming has consisted of solving a murder in Murdered Soul Suspect and attempting to stop Ganondorf in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. As I have gotten older, it’s much more difficult to play video games. I try my best to cram thirty minutes for gaming on my 3DS, but working longer hours gets in the way. Besides bills, moving home has made me busy along with organizing my boyfriend’s belongings. He moved home with me because he accepted a job in the Minneapolis area. The boyfriend is a huge gamer so he has his own Xbox 360 and Xbox One which means I didn’t need my white Xbox 360 from 2008. I had two options: I could keep my 360 because it does hold a lot of great gaming memories or I could sell it. I hate clutter, so I made the choice of selling my Xbox 360 to GameStop.

I don’t regret selling my 360 because I didn’t need it anymore. I will never forget the excitement I had in Christmas 2007 when I unwrapped the Xbox 360. When I sold my 360, I ended up having $69 dollars in store credit to spend. Here’s my Gamestop haul:

Link Poster

[Image shows a poster laying flat. The poster features Link holding a bow and arrow]

I got this poster for free because the Gamestop employee found it in the back and gave it to me. I plan on buying a frame for it and hanging it in my future apartment.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M

[Image shows a cover of a video game. "The cover is Code Name S.T.E.A.M"]

This game features the voice work of Wil Wheaton and the art is inspired by comics. What more could you want from a video game?

Deadpool

[Image shows a video game cover for Deadpool. Deadpool is giving a thumbs up]

I don’t know how great this game will be, but it looks like Wolverine and Psylocke may appear at some point so I’m looking forward to that.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes

[Image is a video game cover. The video game is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes]

LEGO games are underrated and usually keep me busy for a good chunk of time.

Life is Strange

[This is a video game cover for Life is Strange]

My friend played this game on Steam and loved it. This means a lot since my friend typically isn’t a gamer. After Murdered Soul Suspect, this is the next game that I will be playing.

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice

[Image is a video game cover for Sonic Boom Fire & Ice]

The last game I purchased is this Sonic game. I remember being a young kid watching my brother play a Sonic the Hedgehog PC game. I have a soft spot for any Sonic game.

I’m glad to have new games to play! I hope to post reviews of these games soon.

MSP Comic Con 2017

[Image is a convention poster / flier. It says "Brought to you by the All-Volunteer Midwest Comic Book Association MSP ComiCon 2017" Below the typing, there is an image of the "MCBA" logo along with a female character in a superhero outfit. Her shadow is shown behind her. At the bottom of the flier, it says "May 20th and May 21st 2017 1 AM - 6 PM 10 AM - 5 PM Sunday".

The 2017 convention season has begun since last weekend I attended my first con of the season. MSP ComiCon is run by volunteers which is pretty impressive. I always sit with the Twin Cities Geek table so I am considered an exhibitor at the convention. I have never paid to get into this con and I get free lunch that’s cooked by the volunteers for this con. This con is one of my favorites and I always meet new creators each time I attend. I made sure to bring cash with me and I wanted to show off the comics and books I purchased.

Kim & Kim #1 by Black Mask Studios

[Image is a comic book cover. The title says "Kim & Kim" It shows two women close together with a boy in the center with tentacles for arms]

Kim & Kim details the story of two young women who hijack some bounties and get into trouble. This comic emphasizes powerful female relationships while taking place in this punk rock, sci-fi adventure.

Lake Lurkers by M.P. Johnson

[Image is a book cover. It says "Lake Lurkers MP Johnson" and the cover is an enhanced image of monster's mouth open wide]

Lake Lurkers is a horror novella about creatures living in Lake Harriet which is located in Minneapolis. I have been trying to read more horror and I like how this takes place in areas around Minneapolis. I can’t wait to read this.

Big in Japan by Timothy Price

[Image is a book cover called Big in Japan by Timothy Price.]

What would happen if a rock star/band traveled to Japan to fight a Godzilla-like creature? Once I read this book, I’ll let you know how it turns out. My first impression of this book is imagining Led Zeppelin battling with the Kaiju from Pacific Rim. This seems like a cool premise for a book.

RoboCatz vs. Thunder Dogs by Justin Cermak

[Image is a comic cover. It says RoboCatz vs. Thunder Dogs"

Robot dogs are destroying robot cats and vice versa in this epic comic. I am rooting for the robot cats of course.

H.E.N.C.H (Helping Evil Nefarious Criminals Hire) by James Person & Chad Freund

[Image is a comic book cover. The title says "H.E.N.C.H" and the cover appears to be a file of some sort]

Supervillains usually always lose against the heroes, so how about trying to hire villains for other job positions. I’m doing a terrible job explaining this comic because it’s more interesting than how I’m describing it out to be. I am linking the H.E.N.C.H. Facebook page so you can learn more yourself.

That is everything I purchased from MSP ComiCon this year. I am actually slightly overwhelmed by all the comics I have yet to read, but I know I will get around to reading everything eventually.

Lying Cat + Soviet Superman; Comics I Read Recently

My comic-to-be-read pile is huge! Last weekend I went to a convention where I bought numerous comics and graphic novels and today I went shopping and picked up DC’s Rebirth: Red Hood & the Outlaws Vol. 1 because I’m considering cosplaying Red Hood in the future. In recent days I have finished a couple of series and I wanted to share one gigantic post with all the comics I read.

Saga Volume #1: Saga was a comic book series that everyone was raving about. I felt like I was out of the loop so I purchased the first volume and I liked it. I like Lying Cat, I want one as a pet. The relationship between the two main characters is told extremely well. I liked Saga, I wish I read this earlier. I rated Saga four stars on Goodreads.

Nailbiter Volume #2:  Nailbiter Volume #1 was my favorite series I read last year so I had extremely high hopes. Sadly, I felt a little letdown. I felt like I read the trade paperback and nothing really happened. It seemed a lot of the stories were more filler information about the town than anything else. However, the ending did leave me wanting to keep reading on to the third volume so I’m hoping this is just a slump in the series. I rated Nailbiter three stars on Goodreads.

Superman Red Son: This graphic novel presents an interesting dilemma; what if Superman crash landed in Russia versus the United States? Obviously, Superman would still fight for his country and his people, but now it’s on the side of Communism versus Capitalism. I liked how each of the DC characters was brought into the story including Batman as an anarchist to Superman’s reign. This was an interesting read, but not my favorite title I read this year. My boyfriend loves Superman and probably enjoyed this more than I did. I rated this three stars on Goodreads.

[Image is a cover of a graphic novel that I'm holding. The graphic novel is Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. It shows a young girl kissing a red dinosaur]

Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur Volume #1. Three quick words to sum up Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur would be: adorable, heartwarming, and charming. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur establish this strong partnership right off the bat and seeing Devil Dinosaur’s facial expressions make me laugh. Moon Girl is a great comic to introduce to younger girls. I want to save this for my future daughter. I rated Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur five stars on Goodreads.

Snotgirl #1: I was unsure of this series, so I only purchased the first issue. I thought it was okay, but it wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. I eventually will read the first trade paperback, but not for a while.

This has saved me a lot of time to consolidate this into one post versus writing several in a row. If you don’t follow me on Goodreads, you should >>>> Bizarre Brunette’s Bookshelves!

April & May Thrift Haul

Being a college student has taught me to be frugal with the way I spend money. Thrift shopping at either Goodwill or TJ Maxx has taught me how to have great style on a budget. Thrift stores offer the cutest clothes for cheap. In these past two months, I went thrifting twice so I wanted to share my thrift store haul down below.

Clothes:

[Image is a selfie. I'm wearing a gray t-shirt that says "Star Wars Go Rogue with Jyn Erso on it. It's a Star Wars Rogue One t-shirt]
Star Wars Rogue One T-Shirt

I found this Star Wars Rogue One t-shirt for $3. If you follow me on Instagram, I wore this shirt to my graduation rehearsal on “May the 4th” This shirt is soft and looks great paired with leggings or with a pair of skinny jeans.

[Image shows a dress being laid out flat. The dress is a two strap dress that's black and beige. The pattern is a geometric print]
[Image is a picture of me and my brother on my college graduation. I'm wearing the same geometric dress with my cap and gown].

This was the dress that I wore for graduation. It was only $10 dollars and it has pockets on either side so I could fit my phone in the pocket. It made it easier to meet up with family & friends after the ceremony.

[Image is a maxi long dress laid flat. The dress is a tank dress with a purple, pink, geometric pattern].

[Image is a picture of me and my mom. I'm wearing the dress from the previous picture.]

This maxi dress cost $15 and it was worth the price. It’s more form-fitting than the other dress I bought. I wore this the day after graduation as my family took a day trip to Lacrosse, Wisconsin. The geometric print is different from what I typically wear because I wear black a lot, but I’m trying to get out of my comfort zone.

Toys:

[Image is a picture of me holding a remote controlled BB8 from Star Wars]

I didn’t find this at a thrift store, instead, my friend was getting rid of her BB8 Remote Controlled toy. If I didn’t take it off her hands, it would have ended up at a thrift store, so that counts right?

[Image shows a stuff Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon]

How to Train Your Dragon is such an underrated animated film partly due to Toothless. This was a Build-a-Bear exclusive that I found while thrifting. I couldn’t resist purchasing this.

Miscellaneous:

[Image shows a trading card. On the trading card are several people who are The Avengers]
[Image is the same card from the previous image. Instead it says "30th Anniversary 1962-1992 Spider-Man II. Lower on the card it says "71. The Avengers. Below it gives a brief description of the card. It says:

"When Spidey thwarted the robbery of a pawn shop with the aid of the mighty Thor, the thunder god offered him membership in the Avengers. The wall-crawler rejected the offer to leave himself more time for his studies."

I found these Spider-Man trading cards from the 30th anniversary of the creation of Spider-Man. I don’t know what these cards are worth, but they were in pretty good condition. I have a big stack of cards that I have been reading through. The picture above features The Avengers but there are cards that feature how Peter met Gwen Stacy, MJ, and other major events in Spider-Man‘s life. I plan on buying card sleeves for them so they don’t get bent out of shape.

I would say thrift shopping has been a success! I found new clothes to wear and new collectibles to add to my collection. I do plan on thrifting much more in the future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Review

[Image is a movie poster. It shows several characters on it including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Yondu, Mantis and Nebula. They are holding space weapons and shooting beams of energy]

There has been a lot happening in my life recently. Graduating from college was the biggest highlight, although I did participate in Free Comic Book Day and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. #2 twice. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy as it was a movie that I didn’t know what I was expecting when I originally watched it for the first time. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was fun.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 focuses on the theme of family. Is family the people who are related to us by blood or the friends we meet along the way, or both? In the first five minutes of the movie, we see the Guardians defeat a supreme beast and protect precious batteries for the Sovereign nation. After Rocket steals these batteries for his own means; the Guardians are attacked by the Sovereign fleet. This is when Star-Lord meets his father, Yondu & Rocket connect, and Gamora and Nebula form a sisterly bond.

Gamora and Nebula’s relationship changes in this movie and for me, I liked how they became allies. It shows that they both had a miscommunication in their relationship and they were able to come to terms with their experiences and abuse under Thanos.

As always, the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack is still so fun. I found myself having the soundtrack on repeat no matter if I was at the gym or relaxing at home. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. #2 is still a great sequel.

Forever a WSU Warrior

Hello geek friends and blog followers! As you can probably tell.. my posts have been somewhat irregular. I am thrilled to announce that I officially graduated from college at Winona State University! My B.S. is in Exercise Science with a minor in nutrition and I am currently in the process of relocating with the boyfriend to Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I wanted to reflect on my years at school and post plenty of pictures.

Freshman Year: Exciting, Overwhelming, and Lots of Socializing (2012 – 2013)

[Photo of me and my mom on a bench on Winona State University's campus]
[Selfie of me in my college dorm room]
[Another selfie of me and a friend. It's very sunny out and I'm squinting]

I look so young in all three of these pictures. The first picture was right before my family left me at school. I remember seeing them leaving and crying for a good hour. I was scared and I didn’t know what to expect. Eventually, I grouped with my floor mates and I figured everything out.

The one thing I will miss about freshman year is how exciting everything is. I’m in a fresh town to explore, new people, to meet and I took a lot of pictures. The last picture was with one of my very first friends I met in college. College forces you to meet so many new people at once and it’s overwhelming in that way.

Sophomore Year; Lonely, Battling Some Insecurities (2013 – 2014)

[Image shows four women posing near a bench. It's a hot summer day]
[Image is a cat perched on the hood of a vehicle in the background of a red building]
[Image shows a bench near by a lake. In the background are bluffs with snow on them]

The first photo is confusing, but during my sophomore year, I felt alone. There were friends I made in my freshman year that I wasn’t friends with in my sophomore year. Some say that you find your “group” in college, but it wasn’t until my junior year of college that I felt happy with my friend group. That’s okay. College is a different experience for everyone and I happened to have my own journey in meeting new friends.

I did join Astronomy Club my sophomore year of college which I really enjoyed along with volunteering at the local humane society. These experiences helped get me through.

Junior Year; Independent, Delighted, and Full of Memories I Will Never Forget (2014 – 2015)

[Image shows three women smiling and posing at a party]
[Image of two women posing at a party]

This was my absolute favorite year in college. I found my friend group, started a new relationship (the boyfriend & I have been together for 3 years since October!!!) and started my new major. My favorite memories this year include: meeting my boyfriend, “welcome week 2014”, visits to the St. Paul science museum, the homecoming parade, hiking in White Water National Park with a friend, Free Comic Book Day, and Living in Winona for the summer and so much more. My junior year of college would be a year that if I could relive all over again, I would.

Senior Year; BROKE (2015 -2016)

It’s common for most college students to have that one year in school where they struggle to pay for food. That was my senior year. I took trips in the summer of 2015 that left me without much money. I don’t have anything else to say about this year so let’s move on.

Super Senior Year Impatient! (2016 – 2017)

[picture of three women. I'm in the center holding my Winona State University diploma]

I was impatient because I was taking a 5th year to complete my degree and overall, I was ready to move on to the next chapter of my life. I am so proud of earning my degree! It didn’t feel like I was graduating until I walked into the gymnasium filled with loved ones. I waved to my mom as I found my seat and that’s when I had the epiphany of being done with college. I started to tear up because I am sure in a couple months I will look back on these years and miss each year. Eventually, I want to write a post about the life lessons I learned from college. In five years, I feel like I have grown in so many ways.

I am so ready for whatever comes next.

March for Science!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of marching in downtown St. Paul, MN for the March for Science. The march for science is protesting the neglected scientific research for global warming exhibited in the Trump presidency. Science is extremely important for the success of our planet and I’m not agreeing with how Trump is handling the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). This post isn’t to necessarily start a political debate, but I am proud to say that I protested for something I believe in. I’m a biologist at heart and I’m a firm believer in funding NASA and traveling through space. I wanted to share my pictures from the march.
