Do you ever have those moments where you think to yourself, “Has it really been that long”? One of those moments happened to me a week ago. I was watching a YouTube video where someone was saying that The Avengers came out ten years ago. I almost didn’t believe it. Sure enough, I looked it up, and The Avengers was released on May 4th, 2012. I can’t believe it’s been ten years since The Avengers was released in theaters.
Four years ago, I wrote a post on Bizarre Brunette about why The Avengers film means so much to me. I won’t repeat myself too much except to say that The Avengers was a major factor in why I started reading comics. It makes me think that I have been reading comics full-time for almost a decade, which is mind-boggling to me.
When I reminisce about my love for The Avengers, I think back to my freshman year of college. In my dorm room, I had two Hawkeye posters. I remember hanging them on my wall. This leads me into the line of thinking where it’s been ten years since my freshman year of college and my high school graduation. There’s been so much change in my life from 2012 to 2022.
Without getting too off-topic, I was thrown off by The Avengers being released ten years ago. Let me know in the comments if you have felt something similar, where you’re thrown by how long it’s been since either a movie, TV show, or something happened in your life that was rather significant.
I miss the days of watching the Netflix Marvel TV series, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. Iron Fist wasn’t my favorite, but it still set up The Defenders. I liked that this series tackled adult themes and how it felt like a departure from the Marvel franchise. With Moon Knight releasing on Disney+, I was looking forward to seeing a darker show. Moon Knight is entertaining, and I hope that there will be a second season.
Moon Knight is as close as Marvel has come to re-creating Batman. Marc Specter is a mercenary who teams up with Raoul Bushman to work together on various jobs. Bushman gets greedy and kills a famed archeologist. Specter tries to stop him, but Bushman leaves him to die. As Specter dies, he’s left on the Khonshu statue, where Khonshu gives him a second chance. This leaves Marc with incredible powers, a god manipulating his every move, and balancing his multiple personalities with his DID diagnosis (dissociative identity disorder).
The show picks up with Steven Grant (played by Oscar Isaac), who is fascinated by Egyptian culture and works in a museum in London. Steven is one of Marc’s alters and is perceived as being the naive alter. Steven wakes up in another country holding a scarab with no memory of how he got there. As Steven flees, he runs into a ceremony being performed by Arthur Harrow (played by Ethan Hawke). Arthur worships the god, Ammit. Arthur’s goal is to summon Ammit and punish people before crimes are committed, while Khonshu is all about delivering justice after the fact. Khonshu warns Marc that if Ammit is summoned, this could lead to the deaths of a lot of people who may or may not deserve it. Marc teams up with his wife, Layla El-Faouly (played by May Calamawy), to stop Arthur before it’s too late.
Oscar does an excellent job of portraying Marc and Steven. Oscar mentions how he developed a separate accent for Steven, so it would feel different. I’m not sure if Oscar’s performance plays on the harmful stereotypes of DID. That’s not my lived experience, so I can’t speak to that. From my experience watching Moon Knight, I feel that Oscar truly becomes Marc and Moon Knight.
Besides Marc, I love Layla. In the comics, Marc marries Marlene, and Marlene’s father is the archeologist murdered by Bushman. I read that Layla was created to be a live-action version of Marlene from the comics. The show changed Marlene to Layla to add diversity to the show. If that’s true, I’m all for it. May Calamawy is a great choice, and I feel she truly embodies this woman who will protect Marc because she loves him, but also has the trauma of losing her father violently. May and Oscar have this slow-burning romance together, and I’m here for it.
I was a little worried about how Moon Knight would wrap up. It seemed the final episode had a lot of ground to cover. The final episode was well worth the wait, and it doesn’t feel rushed. Unfortunately, Marvel posted on Facebook the day the episode aired and spoiled part of this episode before I could watch it. Shame on me for not avoiding social media. I would highly recommend watching this show in one sitting to prevent being spoiled.
Moon Knight is probably one of my favorite Marvel TV series released to date, besides WandaVision. Moon Knight can be streamed on Disney+ with new episodes airing on Wednesdays.
May the 4th be with you! May the 4th has a special place in my heart because I’m a big Star Wars fan and I look forward to this month every year. Every May, I dedicate the whole month to Star Wars. I wanted to share my official plan for this year as far as the books I want to read, the shows I want to watch, and the video games I want to play.
Books and Comics
I have three books on my list to read for the month of May. The first book is Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray. This book highlights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan before the events of The Phantom Menace. I have a soft spot for the prequels, so I like that more of the Canon Star Wars books are taking place during this era. The second book on my list is Leia, Princess of Alderaan (Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi) by Claudia Gray. This book focuses on Leia as a sixteen-year-old girl who begins her fight against the Empire. The final book on my list is Resistance Reborn: Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker by Rebecca Roanhorse. This book focuses on Rey, Finn, and Poe before the events of the final movie in the trilogy. This book has mixed reviews, so I’m going into reading this book with a mindset of wanting a fun adventure with the trio, versus this being the best book I have ever read.
As far as comics, I have three graphic novels on my list: Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol #1, Star Wars: The High Republic Volume #1, and Princess Leia Volume #1. I have a few comic book store trips planned this month, so I may pick up Star Wars comics as I see fit.
Movies & TV
My number one priority is to finish Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I typically only watch the show during May, but we shall see if this is the year where I finally finish it! Besides The Clone Wars, I want to re-watch The Mandalorian. There’s also The Book of Boba Fett and Bad Batch. My focus this month will be on the Star Wars TV side of things; however, I would consider doing a re-watch of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. I did a movie re-watch a few years ago, and I don’t think I made it through those three. I know for a fact that I haven’t watched The Rise of Skywalker since I saw it in theaters, so I may add that to my list. There’s so much content and such limited time to watch it all.
Gaming
This should come as no surprise since I wrote about this recently, but I’m still going through LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. I’m at the end of episode III right now. My goal would be to complete all episodes by the end of the month, but that seems like a huge task. I do have Jedi: Fallen Order on my list to play as well; however, I don’t think I will have time to complete both games.
May the 4th be with you, and don’t forget that May 5th is “Revenge of the Fifth”!
May 4th 2022, is almost a month out. Every May, I like to devote the entire month to Star Wars as a way to celebrate May 4th. I only watch Star Wars content, play Star Wars video games, and read Star Wars books and comics. I haven’t fully planned out this year’s Star Wars game plan, although I still wanted to share some Star Wars media or content that I’m most hyped about.
Obi-Wan Kenobi – May 27th 2022
As a big fan of the prequels, I’m absolutely pumped for this to drop on Disney+. This series will reunite Hayden Christiansen and Ewan McGregor as the opposite ends of the force. I watched this trailer and shivered because it brought back memories of the prequels. I’m ecstatic!
Star Wars Andor – Release Date Unknown
Rogue One is another Star Wars film that I adore. It shows the tragedy of war, sacrifice, and fighting for the greater good. Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) is a character who has suffered, and I think there’s more to him that’s worth revealing. I’m excited for this series to premiere. This is a series that has been a long time coming.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
I decided last minute that I was going to play this game. I wish I had pre-ordered it. The Deluxe copy was sold out everywhere, so I had to settle on the standard copy, which included the game only. I played LEGO Star Wars last year on my PC, and I ended up not finishing it as I don’t have a gaming computer, so I felt the game lagged at times. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga includes the new Star Wars films, but also makes this game more open-world. There are a ton of missions, collectibles, and characters to unlock. I was going to wait until May to play this, but I couldn’t resist playing it now.
I’m looking forward to next month! In a week or two, I plan on scouring through my Goodreads TBR for Star Wars books I still have left to read, along with taking a trip to my local comic book store for Star Wars comics. May the 4th be with you!
When Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman, I felt the casting choice was surprising. I wouldn’t have picked Robert as my first choice to play Batman. I have been skeptical about casting decisions before, but I have always kept my opinions to myself until a trailer is released. Once the Batman trailer dropped, I was hooked. My husband and I went to see The Batman last week, and it was amazing! I’m so glad I kept an open mind because Robert Pattinson is one of my favorite portrayals of Batman to date.
The Batman takes place in the first few years of Bruce donning the Batman persona. He has physically prepared for the job, yet he still has a lot to learn. Batman (played by Robert Pattinson, as hinted above) is called to a crime scene by James Gordon (played by Jeffrey Wright). From what they can gather, a serial killer is targeting Gotham’s elite, and once he disposes of them, he exposes these individuals as being morally corrupt. This killer has the same goals as Batman but is not afraid to kill. As Batman investigates this killer, he gets entangled with Selina Kyle (played by Zoe Kravitz) as Selina is looking for her missing friend. Batman has to juggle between protecting Gotham, exposing the corruption, and living his double life as Bruce Wayne.
As mentioned above, Robert Pattinson does an excellent job of playing Batman. With Christian Bale’s performance, he capitalized on the “Playboy” persona of Bruce Wayne. Robert portrays Bruce as a millionaire in the shadows who seems uncomfortable being Bruce Wayne in public. I felt this was a more authentic take on the character. As Batman, Robert is an intimidating presence, along with providing his intelligence in being the world’s greatest detective. Besides Robert, the whole cast in this movie did an excellent job. Zoe’s portrayal of Catwoman was so good. Robert and Zoe’s chemistry was on fire throughout the whole movie. There was flirty banter between them, along with a bond being formed after Bruce prevents Selina from killing someone from her past. By the end of the film, Bruce has a growing respect for Selina and seems to miss her as she leaves Gotham. Jeffrey Wright fully embodied Jim Gordon, and Colin Firth was unrecognizable as Penguin. Last, but not least, Paul Dano’s take on the Riddler was realistic, as I think the Riddler is often a villain whom people make fun of.
The cinematography in this film is haunting. The way Gotham is portrayed as a vibrant city with a criminal underworld. There are several sequences that are shot beautifully. There’s a scene where Batman is fighting several men, and the room is completely dark. The only light comes from the men shooting their assault weapons. It reminded me of the Daredevil stair fight scene in Marvel’s Daredevil. From the trailer, there’s a moment where Batman steps out of the Batmobile with flames in the background, walking to a flipped car. Seeing this scene on the big screen was so worth it.
The Batman is accompanied by a terrific movie score. The main song used in both the trailer and whenever Batman has a major moment is addictive. I have been listening to the score non-stop since seeing the film.
The Batman was everything I could have wanted from a DC film. The Batman reminds me of the Batman Arkham Asylum video game series in a movie form. My husband and I can’t wait to see this movie again.
I mentioned in my previous post that my husband is enjoying the Peacemaker spin-off show on HBO Max. For those unfamiliar, Peacemaker was first featured in last year’s DC romp, The Suicide Squad. Directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad introduced Peacemaker (played by John Cena), a character obsessed with maintaining global peace, who would kill anyone to achieve this. Shortly after The Suicide Squad was released, it was announced that Peacemaker would be getting his own series. When I originally heard this, I wasn’t interested. Peacemaker wasn’t the member of The Suicide Squad that stood out to me the most. My husband badgered me to watch the series with him and give it a chance. I’m glad he did because Peacemaker is such a fun, dark, and witty show.
The show begins with Peacemaker (real name: Christopher Smith) waking up in the hospital after the battle in The Suicide Squad. He makes his way back to his father’s house to pick up his pet bald eagle, Eagly. As Peacemaker tries to resume his normal life, he’s confronted by A.R.G.U.S agents who need his help with “Project Butterfly”. As more information is disclosed to Peacemaker throughout his mission, he realizes this is serious and could lead to an alien invasion if “Project Butterfly” isn’t stopped.
John Cena delivers his lines in a way that’s impossible not to laugh. Joining Peacemaker is his ally, Vigilante (played by Freddie Stroma). Vigilante is another comic relief; however, his lines are delivered in a dark way as Vigilante kills everyone and shows no remorse for his actions. If you’re not a fan of dark humor, this show is not for you.
The A.R.G.U.S agents create this cohesive team as everyone has a role to fill. There’s Emilia Harcourt (played by Jennifer Holland) who’s the combat-heavy character. She’s a hard shell to crack; however, as the episodes have continued, it’s clear Peacemaker is starting to grow on her. Besides Emilia, there’s Leota Adebayo (played by Danielle Brooks), who offers humility to the team. She isn’t trained to kill and often struggles with making the tough choice. It’s a nice balance between her and Emilia. Technical support is provided by John Economos (played by Steve Agee), who has a big moment in the series with a chainsaw, which I won’t spoil. The team is well-balanced, and it’s been so fun to see them start to connect with each other.
I never thought I would say this, but Peacemaker has been an absolute blast. I went into watching this show thinking this was not going to be something I would like, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I hope Peacemaker gets a second season, as I’d like to see more Suicide Squadmembers make an appearance.
I don’t force myself to watch shows that I’m no longer interested in. I used to do this more frequently in college, but it took the joy out of watching TV. I found myself keeping track of certain series I love and noticed a pattern. There are shows where I watch certain seasons, and then I can’t bring myself to finish the series. It could be that the show took a weird turn, or the show lost its spark that kept me invested. I still consider myself a fan of these shows and wanted to list my favorite TV series, even though I won’t watch every episode.
Agents of Shield: Seasons #1 – #3
I loved the first few seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The cast had great chemistry together, and each character had something to bring to the team. I loved the chemistry between Jemma (played by Elizabeth Henstridge) and Fitz (played by Iain De Caestecker). The first few seasons were addictive, yet I found by the fourth season, my interest in the show declined. I have re-watched Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at least twice, and I can never seem to finish the series.
Scandal: Seasons #1 – #4
Scandal is another show where I gave up watching after finishing season four. I felt Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald Grant (played by Tony Goldwyn) were such a good couple early on, but then it felt like they were playing games with each other in later seasons. They either need to be committed to each other or break up. Scandal also went in a different direction than what I was looking for. The first few seasons of Scandal are great TV, but I just can’t finish it.
24: Seasons #1 – #5
24 follows Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) agent Jack Bauer (played by Kiefer Sutherland), who helps prevent terrorist attacks on the US. The first five seasons were thrilling to watch. There were great plot twists, and each of the CTU agents was interesting to follow. Season five was a gut punch with the death of some major characters, including former President Palmer (played by Dennis Haysbert), Michelle Dessler (played by Reiko Aylesworth), and Tony Almeida (played by Carlos Bernard). I remember feeling so heartbroken over their deaths. This was one of the first TV moments where I had attachments to these characters, so when they died, it was shocking. After season five, there were some weird moments. I pretend the other seasons of 24 don’t exist, and it’s only seasons #1 – #5.
What shows have you started and haven’t been able to finish? Let me know in the comments below!
Why did I wait so long to watch Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings? Am I the only one who felt that out of all the Marvel movies, Shang-Chi was the one that was least advertised? I have started to fall behind in watching Marvel content, as I still haven’t seen Black Widow or Hawkeye on Disney+. I’m hoping to get caught up shortly before I’m accidentally spoiled. I watched Shang Chi, and this film rocked.
Shaun aka. Shang-Chi (played by Simu Lee) is a valet in San Francisco alongside his friend, Katy (played by Awkwafina). During the bus ride to work, Shaun is attacked and fights in expert hand-to-hand combat, shocking Katy. Shaun reveals to Katy his real name, how his dad is evil, and his sister is someone he needs to protect. Throughout the film, Shang-Chi finds out more about his family and discovers a plane he knew nothing about.
One of my favorite action sequences is at the beginning, where Shang-Chi is fighting on the San Francisco bus. The bus served as a perfect backdrop as Katy drove through hilly intersections. Speaking of Katy, Awkwafina plays her perfectly. Katy is the getaway driver and provides the one-liners throughout the film. The best one-liner is after she hears about Shang-Chi’s identity, she says, “You changed your name from Shang to Shaun? No wonder your father found you.” Besides both Simu Lee and Awkwafina, this film features a ton of talent, including Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung, and Meng’er Zhang. I have been a big fan of Michelle Yeoh ever since Tomorrow Never Dies,Yeoh abolishing the Bond girl stereotype.
One thing that surprised me about Shang-Chi was the nods to past Marvel films. I can’t say anything more without spoiling the film, but there was one tie-in to a previous Marvel film that completely changes that Marvel film for me. While Shang-Chi has been out for months, I don’t want to be the one to accidentally spoil a film for someone.
I’m glad I finally got around to watching Shang-Chi, and I wish I had been able to see it in theaters. I hope to see Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) in future Marvel films. I checked the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cast list, and I didn’t see Simu Lee listed, so I hope I’m wrong. Shang-Chi can be streamed on Disney+
I remember a former friend in high school who would sell her mom’s OxyContin pills. That was probably the first time I heard Oxy referenced. OxyContin has a turbulent history, especially seen in John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight episode on Opioids. I discovered Dopesick while browsing through Hulu, and while the series is harrowing, it’s well worth watching.
Dopesick is based on a non-fiction book written by Beth Macy titled Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America. Dr. Samuel Finnix (played by Michael Keaton) is a doctor in the rural areas of Virginia. Finnix is targeted by Purdue Pharma sales rep, Billy Cutler (played by Will Poulter), who tells Finnix that OxyContin can help his patients who suffer injuries while working in the mines. Finnix is persuaded based on the fact that “less than 1% of users on OxyContin get addicted” even though OxyContin is an opioid. This is further from the truth as both Finnix and another patient, Betsy Mallum (played by Kaitlyn Dever), are addicted to Oxy. Besides following Finnix and his rural town, the DEA is investigating Purdue Pharma, along with the lawsuit about how Purdue Pharma blatantly lied about OxyContin to make money.
I hope Kaitlyn Dever wins an award because her story was the most heartbreaking. She tells her parents she’s a lesbian, and her father tells her to leave. It’s sad because it’s clear Betsy is trying to get off Oxy; however, Oxy and opioid use alter brain chemistry, so Betsy struggles to remain clean. Michael Keaton also did a great job, along with Will Poulter, who wants to succeed under the shadow of his successful parents. The acting in this was heavy.
Dopesick also highlights Purdue Pharma and how evil they are. Most pharmaceutical companies are iffy at best, but Purdue Pharma sucks. It’s clear that the Sackler family knew about their drug, but they didn’t care. If that didn’t piss me off, what’s worse is Purdue Pharma blaming addicts for getting addicted and not the drug itself. Purdue Pharma is the worst, and it sounds like the Sacklers won’t be penalized for the damage they have done.
One thing Dopesick doesn’t touch on is where Oxy is at now. While OxyContin caused a majority of overdose deaths, it’s now cheaper Opioids like Heroin or Fentanyl that are keeping the Opioid crisis alive today. Heroin and Fentanyl are cheaper than OxyContin, so they’re often at the heart of overdose deaths. I felt Dopesick could have touched on this more.
I highly recommend watching Dopesick, but it’s a dark show. I hope Dopesick wins an award or two because it highlights the reality of living in rural America and how one company destroyed and keeps destroying small communities.
2021 is almost over! It’s hard to believe that 2022 will mark two years since the dreaded 2020 lockdown. While we have a vaccine and a booster, it still feels like the pandemic is far from over. 2021 was a fairly decent year, especially because there was more going on since I was able to get vaccinated in May.
Movies I Saw In Theaters
The Suicide Squad
No Time to Die
Spider–Man: Far From Home
It’s fitting that the last movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic was Birds of Prey, and the first movie I saw in theaters after I was vaccinated was The Suicide Squad. Out of the above three, I would say Spider-Man: Far From Home and The Suicide Squad would be tied at number one.
Besides the above movies, I also watched WW84, From Russia With Love, Rocketman, Just Mercy, Free Brittany, Justice League Snyder Cut, Heroin(e),Charlie’s Angels 2019 film, Untouchable, I, Tonya, and Pray Away. The worst movie I watched in 2021 was WW84. All the joy from the first Wonder Woman movie was sucked out of the sequel.
TV Shows I Watched
WandaVision
Harley Quinn – animated series
The Falcon & the Winter Soldier
Loki
Bar Rescue
Dopesick
I didn’t watch as much TV this year, partly because I got into Critical Role while still quarantined earlier in the year. My favorite TV show I watched this year was easily WandaVision. It was such a heartbreaking show, and Elizabeth Olsen did such an amazing job portraying Scarlet Witch and someone suffering from the weight of grief. I finished watching Dopesick recently, which is a series about the rise of Purdue Pharma and OxyContin. It was intriguing and appalling.
Video Games I Played
Vampire: The Masquerade Shadows of New York
Miles Morales
Night Call
Doki Doki Literature Club
Nancy Drew: & The Haunted Carousel
Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nancy Drew: Alibi in Ashes
Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion
LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 & 5-7
My favorite game I played this year was Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Despite the game being shorter and having no DLC, it was still my favorite game I played this year. I’m normally not someone who pays attention to the video game soundtrack; however, I ended up listening to the Miles Morales soundtrack on and off throughout the year.
The most disturbing game I played was Doki Doki Literature Club. I wanted to play it to see what the game was all about. I will never touch it again. Besides playing through Doki Doki Literature Club, I played through quite a few of the Nancy Drew PC games since becoming more invested in Steamlast year.
In 2022, I look forward to starting Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game since I finally unlocked all the PS4 trophies for LEGO Harry Potter.
Gaming in 2021
Watching Critical Role (for the first half of the year, I couldn’t play D&D in person)
City of Remnants
Vampire the Masquerade one-shot in July
Mysterium
Adventurer’s League
My highlight of 2021 was being able to play D&D in person. Beginning in 2022, I will be playing in a longer semi-weekly campaign, and I’m thrilled. Watching Critical Role helped keep my love of roleplaying active while waiting for the COVID-19 vaccine. This year, I didn’t play many board games, although I finally opened Mysterium for the first time, and I loved it. I can’t wait to play again.

I read so many single-issue comics due to having a pull list at a comic book store. I try to stop in at least once every other week. As I review the above list, I would say there were two series that would be tied for being my favorite comic series in 2021. The first would be the King in Black main series, along with King in Black: Black Cat. Another notable standout was Witchblood. I love how the series takes place in the Wild West, and it’s a vampires vs. witches standoff series. Other memorable series include Destiny NY, Alice in Leatherland, and Vox Machina.
Graphic Novels
Glitter Vipers
The Vision
Black Mage
Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi Captain Phasma
Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren
Star Wars Adventures Vol #1
Aquicorn Cove
Wolverine Season One
Blackbird
Mooncakes
This is the first year that I have read more single issues than graphic novels. My favorite graphic novel I read this year was The Vision, as I read it right when I started watching WandaVision. A runner-up would be Glitter Vipers. I backed the Kickstarter for it as I liked the idea of a group of drag queens getting into vigilante work. I have a huge stack of graphic novels to read in 2022, so I’m assuming this number will be higher next year.
2021 Pop Culture Moments
Trump Protestors invading the capital (it’s only the seventh day of the new year!!!)
Afghanistan’s government is collapsing to the Taliban
I didn’t discover any new podcasts in 2021. Listening to podcasts has been a hit or a miss. I usually listen to music while driving around the area and save podcasts for longer trips.
Catchiest Song in 2021
According to Spotify, my top song was “Head & Heart” by Joel Corry x MNEK.
Conventions I Attended in 2021
I attended two conventions in 2021: Planet Comic Con in August and C2E2 in December. I hope to attend Emerald City Comic Con in August next year, along with Gen Con and CONvergence. I might add one more out-of-state convention on my list for next year.
