Suicide Squad + Gotham Knights

One of my favorite games of all time is Batman: Arkham Asylum. This game was released in 2009 when I was a nerdy and awkward freshman in high school. This game helped me get through my toughest moments in high school. Rocksteady is a company where, as soon as I find out they’re making another game, I pre-order it instantaneously. Rocksteady is making a Suicide Squad Game while Warner Bros. is making a Gotham Knights game. My heart is exploding with excitement. I’m going to briefly discuss each game, along with linking the trailers.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad trailer

From the trailer, it looks like Superman has turned evil and it’s up to the ragtag team to save Metropolis. Harley Quinn’s look in this game is flawless. She is stylish, not overtly sexual and the game captures her personality in the short four-minute glimpse of the trailer. Besides Harley Quinn, I like Deadshot’s new suit. This game also features both Killer Shark and Captain Boomerang. The music playing through the trailer is hip and fits the overall theme of the Suicide Squad.

I’m curious how the mission set up will be. Will certain missions be played by certain characters, or will I get to pick who I want to be? Both options would work as long as I have equal gameplay between all four characters.

From the trailer, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released in 2022.

Gotham Knights

Bruce Wayne is dead along with Detective Gordon. Gotham is in flames and someone has to step up to avenge Bruce and save Gotham. It’s about time the Bat-Family is introduced into this series of games. In Batman: Arkham Knight, there is limited gameplay of Nightwing and Tim Drake, but this game takes this to a whole new level.

Batgirl is seen throughout the trailer dive-bombing into alleyways. Batgirl is the best female heroine in DC Comics. This game has adopted her best look, which is the yellow combat boots and the zipped-up purple jumpsuit. Red Hood even makes an appearance. He’s a nice addition, considering most of the characters are sneaky, and Red Hood can go into a fight scene with his guns raised.

Gotham Knights will be released in 2021.

Before ending this post, I do want to discuss how Rocksteady is under fire for sexual harassment. The gaming industry is notoriously toxic to women, women of color, and non-binary or gender non-conforming folks. It’s a reminder of how the gaming industry still needs to be upfront with these issues and resolve to do better.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights are incredible. Rocksteady knows how to make decent DC games. I’m anxiously awaiting the day I can play as Batgirl.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Last weekend, I went to visit my friend for the weekend. Besides playing multiple board games, we like to watch movies together. In college, we would go see a movie once a month, at least? Her DVD collection is massive, and I decided to pick the Ghostbusters re-make for us to watch.

Image is a promotional poster for the movie, Ghostbusters. It shows four women and one man on the cover. There's a blonde woman on the left, a man on the left of her with a finger gun. There's a woman holding a red ghost gun and two women on the right of her. Green ghosts are flying in the background.

This particular Ghostbusters outing is a remake directed by Paul Feig, who also directed Bridesmaids. The film centers around physicists Abby Yates (played by Melissa McCarthy) and Erin Gilbert (played by Kristin Wiig). Erin is fired from her teaching position at Columbia University after Abby republishes the ghost book they wrote. Since Erin’s been fired from her job, she teams up with Abby and Dr. Jillian Holtzmann (played wonderfully by Kate McKinnon) to hunt ghosts. Eventually, they meet Patty Tolan (played by Leslie Jones), whose expertise in navigating around NYC helps the group locate the ghosts. Ghosts end up being unleashed, and all hell breaks loose.

The showstopper in this film is Kate McKinnon. Her facial expressions and lines in this movie were the best. I wish Leslie Jones were more of the main character. She felt sidelined for the movie, which is a shame. I can’t forget to mention Chris Hemsworth playing the dumb secretary. Chris Hemsworth isn’t known for comedy, but his one-liners were great.

Although I liked Ghostbusters, this movie ended up being a box office bomb. There was so much controversy over having a female cast. I remember when the trailer for this movie hit YouTube, there was a remarkable amount of thumbs-down responses. I’m biased in my response because I was a ’90s baby, so I wasn’t alive when the original Ghostbusters was released. It saddens me that fans had such a negative reaction to a movie before it was released.

Ghostbusters wasn’t a perfect film by any means, but it was a campy sci-fi film starring funny women. I want all the Dr. Jillian Holtzmann merch. I saw her Funko pop, and it’s so quirky. Let me know what you think of this movie in my comments section below.

Midtown Comics Birthday Haul

Shortly before my birthday, I was going through my email when I saw a birthday coupon come through from Midtown Comics. Midtown Comics is a gigantic comic book store located in Times Square in NYC. During my first trip to NYC, we stopped by the store. I didn’t purchase anything because I didn’t want to carry it around with me. I used my birthday coupon, and now I have even more comics added to my pile to read.

Image is a comic book cover for The Joker 80th Anniversary. It shows a woman wearing clown makeup and holding a joker mask with blood on it. She's wearing dark purple and a black leather jump suit of sorts.

The Joker 80th Anniversary

Where’s Harley Quinn? She’s busy because she dumped the Joker and is doing her own thing. This edition introduces the Joker’s new girlfriend, Punchline. Punchline has got to be one of the worst names. It’s too on the nose for me. I like Punchline’s aesthetic, though. That’s about all I know of this 80th Anniversary collection, but as a DC fan, I figured this would be a necessary addition to my collection.

Image is a comic book cover for the comic Finger Guns. It shows two characters, a girl and a boy holding a finger gun up. Behind them, there are white and black squiggly lines that remind me of an optical illusion.

Finger Guns Issue #1 by Richards, Halvorson, Nalty, and Esposito

Finger Guns tells the story of two teenagers who can manipulate emotions through the use of displaying finger guns. This is all I know about the story. I’m interested to see what this series is all about.

Image is a comic book cover for the comic, Doctor Aphra The rings of Vaale: Haunted. It shows a woman with goggles on her head. She's holding something that's giving off light. There are white bodies to her right that look ghostly in nature.

Doctor Aphra Issue #2 by Wong, Cresta, and Rosenberg

I bought Doctor Aphra issue #1, and I was enthralled by the story, the setting, and Aphra herself. First issues can be a hit or a miss, as they mostly set up the story for future issues. Since issue #1 was a huge hit for me, I knew I needed issue #2.

This series follows Doctor Aphra, a former archaeologist for Darth Vader, as she searches for the Rings of Vaale.

I have been stocking up on comics to keep me busy while staying at home. Let me know what comics you have been reading in the comment section below.

Hidden Through Time Review

Hidden Through Time was a game I purchased in my latest Steam haul. Every review I read for this game was positive. I wanted a chill game to play during the week after I got off work. Hidden Through Time didn’t disappoint, as it was a well-made and challenging hidden objects game.

There isn’t an actual story to Hidden Through Time. There is a series of themed maps in history. In these maps, there is a list of objects to find. I was a perfectionist, meaning I wouldn’t move on to the next map until I located every single object. However, the next map unlocks after a certain quota of objects has been met. If I were truly stuck, I could move on to the next map without finding all the objects. As mentioned above, I didn’t do that because I was focused on completing each level before moving on.

Image is a screenshot from the game, Hidden Through Time. It's a yellow background which is meant to be a desert. There are several tents in the desert with a pyramid in the middle. In the bottom of the image are twelve objects to find. One object is has a lime green background indicating that it was found already.
Ancient Egypt Map. Screenshot taken by me during gameplay.

This game interested my fiancé too. I would be playing this on our couch while he watched the news. He would look at my screen and help me find the objects. Hidden Through Time isn’t a two-player game, but now and then, my fiancé became intrigued and would help me locate the objects.

Hidden Through Time is a challenging game. Some of the levels went quicker, while some levels took at least forty-five minutes to complete. I never felt Hidden Through Time was too hard or that the objects were placed in a way where I would have never found them on my own. If I hover my mouse over the objects themselves, there are cleverly written hints pointing to where the object might be. The hints don’t give away the object’s location, but they gave me an idea as to where the object is.

As far as replayability, the levels can be replayed. There is an online version of Hidden Through Time where players have made their own maps. I played a couple of them. The online play is mostly positive. There was one castle map that took my fiancé and me forever to complete. Other maps were clearly made to be extremely easy. It added another hour or so of extra gameplay to play through the online maps.

Hidden Through Time is a game that helped me unwind after work. It served the purpose of being a game where I didn’t have to put all of my energy into playing. It was rewarding to find an object I was stuck on and couldn’t find. There is a Vikings DLC expansion to the game, probably including more maps. I would purchase this DLC in a heartbeat. Hidden Through Time is available for purchase on Steam.

Birthday Book Haul

For my 26th birthday, my fiancé bought me a Cream and Amber gift card. If you’re new to my blog, Cream and Amber is a local bookstore in the Twin Cities area. It’s where I buy most of my books. I wanted to share my latest book haul with you all. I stacked my books in the order I want to read them in. My Goodreads goal is to read fifty books, and these books should help me reach my reading goal.

Image is a stack of four books. From top to bottom, they are - BlackKkKlansman by Ron Stallworth, Final Girls by Riley Sager, The Ex by Alafair Burke, The Echo Killing by Christi Daugherty, and The Athena Protocol by Sarim Sarif.
Birthday Book Haul!

BlacKkKlansman by Ron Stallworth

I already started reading this book because I couldn’t wait. Last week, I wrote a blog post about the movie version of this book. Ron Stallworth was the first Black cop in the Colorado Springs Police Department. During his tenure, he infiltrates the KKK. I’m only thirty pages in, and I’m enjoying his rendition of telling this story and his experience being a cop.

Final Girls by Riley Sager

This book has a slasher-horror film theme. Since it’s close to October, this book will set the tone for the upcoming season. Final Girls stars Quincy Carpenter, who ten years ago went on vacation with her friends. Her friends are attacked, and Quincy is the only survivor. She’s a part of a survivor group, titled in the press as “The Final Girls”. One of the final girls from the group is murdered, which prompts Quincy to reflect on what truly happened ten years ago.

Final Girls appealed to me because of my love of slasher films.

The Ex by Alafair Burke

I’m a sucker for psychological mysteries as it’s my favorite genre to read. Defense attorney Olivia Randall is contacted by her ex-fiancé to defend him in a triple homicide. According to the book’s bio, Olivia ruined her ex-fiancé’s life. I’m not sure what that means. Is her ex-fiancé innocent, or did she dodge a bullet in choosing to not marry him?

The Echo Killing (Harper McClain #1) by Christi Daugherty

Another mystery book in this book haul. Harper McClain is a skilled crime reporter. She’s called to a homicide that bears similarities to her mom’s murder. Harper is wondering if there’s a connection, and if so, can she finally find out who killed her mother?

This book was released in 2018, and since then, there have been two more books added to this series.

The Athena Protocol (The Athena Protocol #1) by Shamim Sarif

Jessie Archer is a member of the Athena Protocol, an elite organization of female spies. Jessie kills someone on the job, which is against the rules of the organization. Jessie gets involved in a human trafficking case despite being fired. As she goes rogue, her former friends have to hunt her down before she reveals what she finds.

I have another book I purchased, but it got back-ordered. It’s such a great feeling to have new books to read. Quarantine is the perfect time to read through my books.

Have You Ever Fandom Edition

When I say “I’m a geek,” it means I have a lot of different interests. Comics, board games, trading card games, Dungeons & Dragons, movies, video games, reading scientific articles, and more. This blog tag by A Geek Girl’s Guide allows me to discuss my geeky interests in more detail. Here are the questions:

Have you ever made fan art?

Nope. I’m not talented enough to create fan art. Occasionally, I buy fan art at conventions in the artist alley.

Have you ever written fan fiction?

Nope. I have read fan fiction before, but I don’t seek it out. I know many fans find comfort in fan fiction, but it’s not for me.

Have you ever gone to a special event for a fandom? (midnight releases, etc.)

Yes! I went to two of the Harry Potter book release parties. All the conventions I attend count for this question, too. In my bedroom, I have most of my convention lanyards hanging on one of my walls. I have them sorted by whether they’re out of state or my annual Minnesota conventions.

Have you ever been active in a fandom community online?

I used to be on various online forums. One was for an online game called Vmk (Virtual Magic Kingdom). Vmk was an online MMORPG that was Disney-themed. It was a blast. The forums offered advice on finding certain items or completing quests. I’m not on forums as much anymore because I don’t have as much time as I used to, but that’s how I used to interact with fandom communities online.

Have you ever made friends because of mutual fandoms?

For sure! I tend to make the most friends through conventions. Last year, I met a Captain America cosplayer at Gen Con. I still follow him on Instagram, and we talk occasionally.

Here are the questions for this particular tag:

8th Annual Girls Cabin Weekend!

As a result of COVID-19, my summer plans have been modified. Both CONvergence and Gen Con were cancelled. I’m super bummed about Gen Con, as attending Gen Con last year was one of my 2019 highlights. Despite the pandemic, we still got together at my friend’s cabin for our girls’ weekend. I tried to remember how long we had been doing this cabin trip. My memory goes as far back as 2012, before we all went off to college. I’m thankful for the girlfriends in my life. They have helped me survive this pandemic and subsequent Quarantine.

Cabin weekend is always one of my favorite memories. I can’t wait for next year!

BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Image is a movie poster for BlackKkksman. It shows a man standing behind a vertical white and black horizontal pattern. It's the American Flag if the American flag were black and white.

BlacKkKlansman is a movie I have wanted to watch for a while. I couldn’t find BlacKkKlansman on any streaming service I subscribe to. My mom collects DVDs and allowed me to borrow this movie. This movie tells a crucial story, especially with the events that preceded the making of this movie. There was a lot I took away from watching this film.

BlacKkKlansman tells the story of Ron Stallworth (played by John David Washington), who was the first African-American detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. During his service, he sets up an undercover operation to have white police detectives infiltrate the KKK. Philip “Flip” Zimmerman (played by Adam Driver) is the white Ron Stallworth who uncovers a planned bombing on the Black Panther Party. It’s a race against time to stop the bombing at all costs.

The real Ron Stallworth wrote a book about his experience, which I have already ordered from my local bookstore. I admire his bravery in becoming a police officer while racism was still rampant. I’m glad his story was told as a film, so others like me can be aware of his story and read his book.

My major takeaway from this film is recognizing the role white women played in the KKK and in keeping systemic racism alive today. In the film, one of the wives of the Klan helped plan the bombing. This level of violence wasn’t unheard of during this time. In today’s society, I think of the white women who call the police on young black kids. I may not have been alive during the Civil Rights movement, but I want to be an ally in fighting racial injustice.

Towards the end of BlacKkKlansman, the film shows real-life footage of the Unite the Night rally in Virginia, along with President Donald Trump’s statements. If we are to truly eliminate these hate groups, we cannot tolerate them in our society. There are no “both sides” with the KKK; their existence is a symbol of hatred and violence.

BlacKkKlansman deserved every single Oscar nomination. It’s a movie with incredible acting and storytelling. Ron Stallworth’s story, along with the history of the Black Panther Party, has inspired me to donate to nonprofits and to learn more about this time in history.

Rayne and Delilah’s Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner

Image is a book cover for Rayne & Delilah's Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner. The cover is a deep blue, purple and pink. It shows two female character's sitting on some steps. Above them, there's an On Air sign.
Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner.

Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee is one of the most disappointing books I read in 2020. I thought this would be a five-star read; however, this book took a nose-dive halfway through. I rated this three stars on Goodreads. I’m curious to see what other readers felt about this book.

Josie and Delia host a TV show titled Midnite Matinee on TV Access. They have been filming the show for a while, but as their high school graduation comes closer, reality sinks in. Josie has dreams of starring on TV, while Delia wants to keep the horror show alive. Delia’s love of horror reminds her of her father, who abandoned her when she was young. Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee is a reminder of being young, dealing with heartbreak, and finding ways to heal after trauma.

The first half of the book was enjoyable to read. Delia is hands down my favorite character. She reminds me of how I was at that age. Delia’s love for horror is endearing, and I can tell how passionate she is about the show and the movies picked each week. Josie had to grow on me. She comes across as this spoiled, stuck-up girl, especially with how she treats Lawson. Josie grows as a person, but her story arc is predictable. I would have liked to see Josie do what she wants to do, versus following a path that’s put in front of her.

The book takes a left turn when Josie and Delia attend a horror convention in Orlando. This particular scene was uncomfortable to read. Josie and Lawson end up in a dangerous situation after they leave the convention. The situation itself seems to be over the top. After reading this scene, I was contemplating whether I wanted to finish the book. I linked my Goodreads review where I discussed this scene in more detail.

I’m glad I finished the book. Delia found her light at the end of the tunnel while Josie went off to college. I wish I had rented this from the library, so I didn’t have to pay for it. There were good qualities about the book, but I was majorly let down. This is a solid three-star read on Goodreads, but if I could give half ratings, I would probably drop it down to 2 1/2 stars. Rayne and Delilah’s Midnite Matinee is a horror-themed contemporary novel with a monstrous outcome.

Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall

Image is a photo taken from my Steam library for the game, Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall. It shows a woman shaded in black and glowing in gold. Behind her on the left is a ghostly woman in a red dress walking through a graveyard. Off to the right is an old mansion.
Screenshot taken by me in Steam.

As mentioned in a previous blog post, I became inspired to revisit the Nancy Drew games by Her Interactive. Steam has almost all of the Nancy Drew games available for purchase. I chose Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall as it was highly rated. The Nancy Drew games are challenging, engaging, and slightly scary.

In this outing, Nancy is summoned to Thornton Hall to locate Jessalyn. In the process of looking for her, Nancy learns about Thornton Hall and the Thornton family. Charlotte Thornton was a family member who died in a mysterious house fire long ago. Many of the NPCs (non-playable characters) warn you of her ghost roaming the premises. This ties into the mystery of locating Jessalyn while simultaneously uncovering why Charlotte is haunting the grounds.

For anyone who has never played a Nancy Drew game before, I have a couple of hints to share. My first hint is to take a break. Some of the puzzles are time-consuming. I would play this game for 2-3 hours at a time, and I found myself getting frustrated if I couldn’t figure out the puzzle. In turn, this led me to utilize a walkthrough versus trying to solve the puzzle on my own.

My second hint is noting the importance of the information that’s given. Honestly, it might be worth it to take notes. One of the final puzzles in the game is unlocking a briefcase. To open the briefcase, the code can be solved based on the Thornton family history. I found myself failing multiple times as I didn’t have this information written down in front of me.

Another hint I have is being prepared for jump scares. Charlotte, as a ghost, appears when she wants, and the music accompanying the game helps to establish the eerie atmosphere. I didn’t find the jump scares to be too obnoxious, but it’s enough that I genuinely jumped as Charlotte appeared. Additionally, there are moments where, if you press the wrong button, Nancy can be killed in a booby trap. It adds to the tone of the game.

Since purchasing Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall, I have already put 11.4 hours into the game. I’m re-playing the game on master sleuth, which increases the difficulty of the puzzles and eliminates the game’s offering of hints. I haven’t played the other Nancy Drew games, but Ghost of Thornton Hall is a well-made, introductory game in the series. Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall can be purchased and downloaded on Steam.
