Batman V. Superman *spoilers*

Me and my boyfriend are huge DC fans. We were both eagerly awaiting the release of Batman V. Superman to see how it would set up the movie verse of the Justice League. I would say I do tend to lean more toward DC than Marvel, but I like both companies and characters within that universe. I saw this movie on Saturday and I was expecting to hate it. The reviews about this movie have really been awful. I have seen geeks complain about how no one should pay to see this movie. That’s definitely over-exaggerated. This movie has a lot of flaws, but there were parts I liked. I would rate it a 7/10.

What I Liked:

Ben Affleck is actually a really decent Batman. This is why I never hate on a casting choice. Everyone was all angry because Heath Ledger was cast as Joker and now we know how great his portrayal of the character was. When I think of Batman as a character, I think of how truly terrifying he is. Ben Affleck really gave off that vibe. There were several times when he would just appear, and you would get startled. This feels more like an accurate portrayal of the character.

Wonder Woman is another strong aspect of this movie. Gal Gadot does a fantastic job. I wish that it would have been kept under wraps instead of shown in the trailer. It would have been more exciting to see her on-screen without knowing she was going to be there. I’m definitely looking forward to her solo film when it comes out next year.

What I didn’t like:

Jesse Eisenberg is an example of a complete miscast. Lex Luthor seems regal, professional, and serious. Jesse Eisenberg was a mess throughout this entire movie. He felt more like the Joker in his personality than Lex. Zach Synder could have wanted Jesse to act this way, so maybe the fault is on Zach, but this was just a little too much. This is definitely a weak point in the movie.

This movie had too much stuff going on in it. It’s trying to build up this hatred between Batman and Superman, trying to fit in a major villain for a team-up between the two heroes. Doomsday, adding in members of the Justice League, Lex trying to bring the two heroes to fight, and more. I mean I felt overloaded trying to comprehend every single aspect of this movie. Synder tries to throw everything in this movie so that a Justice League movie can happen. I understand why, but I think it harms the movie more than helps.

Finally, this movie felt very boring at times. There are a lot of build-ups, which is great, but it made the movie feel a lot longer. It’s 2 1/2 hours long and you can definitely tell because the movie just felt boring at parts.

Overall, if you’re a fan of DC comics, I suggest seeing this movie. However, it has a lot of flaws and it still feels pretty average. It’s nowhere near some of my favorite superhero movies because it just didn’t excite me like I wish it would have. On the bright side, I can’t wait for the Wonder Woman movie. Hopefully, November 2017 will come rather quickly.

  1. That’s disappointing that it didn’t live up to the hype. And I had NO idea that that little twerp of a guy was supposed to be LEX LUTHOR!!!! OMG, WTF WERE THEY THINKING IN CASTING HIM IN THAT ROLE?! UGH!!!!!!! *headdesk* I’m still going to go see it though. I already put together a whole Wonder Woman outfit for it. Haha! 😉 ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

  2. I loved the Justice League cartoon (before Hawkgirl left), so I really want these movies to do well. I didn’t have high expectations for Batman vs. Superman, and it didn’t even meet those.

This is totally unreasonable, but I think I’m most disappointed that Aquaman is going to be in the Justice League. I mean, I know he’s been in the League in comics, but I just don’t want it. Pick someone else.

  3. Well, I’m glad there were some things you liked about it, at least! I think Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor makes no sense at all:/ I don’t think I’ll be seeing it while it’s still in theatres, but I’m still pretty bummed that it was a bit of a letdown.

  4. I thought the movie was brilliant. After seeing the reviews, my expectations weren’t very high, so it definitely exceeded them. I loved Ben Affleck as Batman, I’d even be inclined to say that he’s my favourite so far, and Gal Gadot was wonderful. I even liked Jesse Eisenberg’s performance, but he didn’t make a very good Lex – he would have been better cast as say Riddler, or even the Joker. He was definitely creepy enough. I don’t think they should have introduced the rest of the Justice League in this movie either, the scene seemed really out of place, maybe they should have left that for after the credits.

    • Ben Affleck as Batman was one of the high notes for me. He definitely played the part of an older Bruce Wayne. Plus the scenes with Batman were just terrifying. Jesse Eisenberg as the Riddler could have been super cool.

  5. Prefacing my comments by letting you know I haven’t actually seen it! However, from the trailers and what I’ve seen/heard of it, I think I’d agree with you 100% on everything. I’ve heard a lot of people say that Ben Affleck is a decent Batman; I think the bashing comes form ‘haters-gonna-hate’ type people. And I could tell from the trailer that I would not be a fan of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex. He seemed way to giggly and wild. Maybe more of a Riddler?
